Does the Media have a Double Standard on Israel?

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Cutting wasteful spending and avoiding harmful foreign entanglements. I wish so-called conservatives and libertarians had the same goals in mind,

I'd love the US to 'get out' of Isreal, Korea, Europe, and a lot of places. A constant military presence all over the world is an outdated paradigm. With modern technology we don't need large military bases dotting the planet. Build the strong military at home & let everyone else run their own affairs.

Problem is the world keeps begging us to 'step in' (ironically, Europe most of all). They LOVE us having a strong military because they consider it to be 'their' military be default. They don't have to maintain a large defense, because we're doing it for them. I say it is long overdue for Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and all the other EU powers to step up and take care of thier own military needs.

But realistically for Isreal, what is the alternative? It is pretty much a given that if the US walks away there would be a horrific bloodbath. The US both (A) provides at least a modicum of a brake on Isreal and (B) prevents the Arab world from booting up Holocaust 2.0 tomorrow. Let's be frank. Europe is neither inclined or capable of halting Muslim aggression if it flares up badly in Isreal or anywhere else. Europe relies on the US to do its dirty work. It isn't an ideal solution, but the US presence is currently about the only real 'stabilizing' influence in that region. Are we prepared to accept the consequences and implications of ending that?

Swine Flu Update - What's really going on? (Blog Entry by EndAll)

I might get around to it when I cool down. Sorry for the flare-up, but the whole "scientists and the government are in bed together in a sinister plot" theme is old and unendingly frustrating to us.

One note though. Vaccines are most certainly never laced with other dangerously altered viruses. That's just nonsense. Often other viruses are used AS vaccines in order to get the best immune response and thus the best immunity in general. Another thing that is done is use of a harmless virus as a way of expressing proteins from a harmFUL virus so that you can gain immunity to the harmFUL virus via the harmless one. For example: The small pox vaccine is actually a live (attenuated, meaning ...um... I guess you could say that means it was genetically altered to be less dangerous) vaccinia virus... and it actually causes a little infection and thus a sore where it is administered, but it sure as hell beats dying for small pox. A good number of my friends have the vaccinia vaccination... because they actually work with vaccinia itself,

Molten Aluminum + Lab Techs = Fail

robbersdog49 says...

Doesn't pure Aluminum react violently with air? I vaguely remember from highschool science my teacher say that Aluminum you find in common use is covered by an oxidized layer, but if you can ever get a fresh piece, thats been stored in a medium like oil or turps, as soon as you pull it out it will burst into flames. I think he may have even demonstrated. The way it's burning after the flare up kind of suggest that reaction might be going on.

No, aluminium is a lot more stable than that. Other metals will react with air and moisture like potassium.

There's a very easy test of this. Get something aluminium and scratch the surface, revealing non-oxidised aluminium underneath. Watch for the flames...

Адажио Adagio

Eklek says...

From IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0297703/

"Adagio" (2000) -is a ten minutes long animated miracle created by Russian master-animator Garry Bardin. He used paper folding also known as origami technique in the film because he felt that the idea of "Adagio" and its visual solution required paper as a perfect material. It took nine months to produce "Adagio". Bardin and his team of animators tried to manually move the paper figures, strange half-men, half-birds creatures, using the trial-and-error method.

"Adagio" which is a philosophical parable exploring the conflict between a hero and the crowd is loosely based on a romantic short story written by the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky about a young man named Danko and his burning heart. In the story, Danko belonged to a tribe of strong men that were forced by their enemies to retreat into the depths of an old dark forest filled with swamps. Danko, young and brave, believed that there was a way out of dark and hostile forest, and he bravely led the people deeper inside. But soon they started to grumble. Fueled by fear and darkness, frustration and anger grew among them. Danko looked at the people and saw only hatred in their faces, and the flame of desire to save them flared up in his heart.

"This flame of love for his people became stronger and stronger, and suddenly, overpowering the sound of thunder, Danko exclaimed: 'What shall I do for my people?' And he tore apart his chest and tore out his heart and raised it high over his head. It blazed like the sun, even brighter than the sun, and the forest, stunned by this overwhelming love for the people, became quiet. Danko ran forward, holding high his burning heart, lighting the road for the people, and they rushed after him. Suddenly, the forest ended, and they emerged into an ocean of sunshine and fresh air, cleansed by the rain. Danko looked at the free land, laughed proudly and fell dead. And the happy people, filled with great hopes and expectations, did not even notice Danko's death and did not see that next to his body his brave heart still burned brightly. Only one person noticed it and fearing something, stomped on the proud heart and extinguished its flame... "

In his short amazing animation, Bardin was able to meditate on many burning issues - intolerance to different opinions and religions, ignorance and lack of desire to learn the history lessons, suspicion that easily turns to hatred for someone who stands out. It is easier to worship the dead hero than to follow him while he is alive. It is unbearable to see that someone is pure and shining – it feels great to smear them, to make them as grey as everyone else around. "Adagio in G minor" widely known as simply Albinoni's Adagio, one of the most frequently recorded pieces of Baroque music, brings tragic and sublime mourning to the film. Well, I can go on for long time about deep meaning of Bardin's images and his pessimistic outlook at the modern society but first and foremost, "Adagio" is a fabulous work of art by an Artist who is known for almost supernatural sense of material. Bardin uses the objects that surround us in everyday life - matches, ropes, wires, and paper as the characters in his animated films.

Lost Cop Shoots Puppy On Private Property In Oklahoma

Fjnbk says...

Jesus Christ, this is really flaring up tempers. A trigger-happy monster/startled law enforcement officer murdered/defended himself against a lovable, harmless puppy/bloodthirsty rabid animal.

The way I see it, this guy overreacted WAAAAY too much, but he did have the right to respond to the dog. The owner comes off as overreacting too; it's always easier to see solutions in hindsight, especially if you have video footage that is slowed down. We have to think about the situation as if we have three seconds to react.

Real life is never as simple as we'd like it to be.

Temp Ban on Schmawy for Abuse of Power (Sift Talk Post)

Do we have a policy on removing *qualities then? That was the reason that schmawy discarded the post, since he was tricked into giving the * quality in the first place.

All this banning makes me upset. It's flaring up tempers. This is going to end uglily.

I give up. (Politics Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

This is definitely a temporary thing. Just two months ago, I thought people had finally reached a saturation level with the election, but it turned out it was just a lull in people's interest between the end of the primaries in June, and the conventions in August.

The minute the conventions started, politics was hot here, and it's stayed hot ever since. I suspect it will stay hot until Nov 4th, and then drop off after that.

Personally, I'm likely to stay interested, and keep posting political videos, though not nearly at the rate I've been going at. I suspect the Top 15 will pretty quickly return to a more diverse composition a week or two after the election, with flare ups possible if Bush invades Iran in December, or the global economy collapses, or aliens land in the Rose Garden.

Playgirl Comes to the End of Its Road

budzos says...

It didn't even look like flirting to me. More like self-deprecating humor. In any case, flirting is not the same as hitting on someone. (sarcasm edited out here)

To me, it seems hypocritical for a girl who doesn't want to engage in any type of sexually charged language with men to chime into a comment thread about a video full of naked men with comments about her sexual predilections. I think you two get off on dramatic flare-ups like this. Just calling it like I see it.

I got an offer to be in Playgirl once. Met with their people and everything. I had just moved to L.A. with no money. So glad I didn't sign for that. No, there are no nude pics of me. One of my few good decisions!

The Right Way to Cook Bacon

sometimes says...

This is incorrect.
The correct way to cook the best bacon you will ever eat is as follows:

on a gas charcoal grill, place a few strips of bacon on the edge of the grill, as far as possible from the flames.

If the bacon is too close to the flames, the dripping fat will catch fire and burn the bacon. This is bad.

Cook the bacon for 15-20 minutes, keeping the grill covered for most of the time. check it every so often to make sure there are not flare ups. Flip the bacon at least once.

When the bacon is evenly brownish, it is done.

Alternatively, on a gas grill, place bacon on the warming rack above the food you are cooking. the bacon fat rendered out will drip on to the food below and impart it's magical piggy flavors into the other food.
This takes a lot longer, and there is increased chances for flare-ups, especially if the grill is not full of food. You need to keep an eye on this.

DragonForce - Through the Fire and Flames

BoneyD says...

I saw these fellas in Melbourne recently and they really try to put on a dynamic performance. Podiums for the guitar solos and fans blowing up from the stage so their hair flared up like fire - it all really suited the 'ball flexin' lyrics and sound. I think good showmanship on stage is equally as important for a band as musical skill, and though it's not really my type of metal, I did enjoy it for what it was

General Merrill McPeak, Why we must leave Iraq

Farhad2000 says...

Imperialism has never worked anywhere. The fight over Kashmir between Pakistan and India is a result of British Empire simply drawing up convenient borders, then departing to leave ethnic tensions to flare up. The same is in the Middle East where where the British simply handed over a regional issue over to another set of peoples. The same in Africa where borders drawn up by various nations that colonized the continent creating the disastrous ethnic tensions that spill over into genocide such as Rwanda.

America is the beacon of western civilization because it strives to be better then the rest. That is the mark of the great nation now hijacked by people who don't understand the ideals upon which it was founded on, resisting imperialist rule by the British.

So tired of so called patriots willing to give away everything this nation is built on because of what?

Fear.
