Bikini Carwash Surprise

Payback says...

Reminds me of a skating joke:

It is the Olympic men's figure skating. Out comes the
Russian competitor, he skates around to some classical music
in a slightly dull costume, performs some excellent leaps
but without any great artistic feel for the music.

The Judges' scores read: Britain 5.8: Russia 5.9: United
States 5.5: Ireland 6.0

Next comes the American competitor in a sparkling stars and
stripes costume, skating to some rock and roll music. He
gets the crowd clapping, but is not technically as good as
the Russian. He slightly misses landing a triple Salchow and
loses the center during a spin. But, artistically, it is a
more satisfying performance.

The Judges' scores read: Britain 5.8: Russia 5.5: United
States 5.9: Ireland 6.0

Finally out comes the Irish competitor wearing a tatty old
donkey jacket, with his skates tied over his wellies. He
reaches the ice, trips straight away and bangs his nose
which starts bleeding. He tries to get up, staggers a few
paces then slips again. He spends his entire 'routine'
getting up then falling over again. Finally he crawls off the
ice a tattered and bleeding mess.

The Judges' scores read: Britain 0.0: Russia 0.0: United
States 0.0: Ireland 6.0

The other 3 judges turn to the Irish judge and demand in
unison, "How the hell can you give that mess 6.0?!"

To which the Irish judge replies "You've gotta remember,
it's damn slippery out there."

Solitary Figure Skater On a BC Mountain Lake

Teeterboarding

spawnflagger says...

This could become an olympic gymnastic competition one day... similarly to how people watch figure skating, secretly hoping to see them fail.

also, this might be the first 'vertical video' that was actually appropriate.

Japanese kid destroys at YoYo championship

bmacs27 says...

How are these things judged? I feel like yoyo has gotten to the point that I have no idea what's impressive anymore. Is there some sort of 1080 equivalent? Or is it more like figure skating where you get as many points for choreography as you do for technicality?

Synchronized Swimming Is Terrifying

messenger says...

The popularity of an event doesn't make it a game or not. My little comments on VS aren't going to affect anyone's enjoyment of it.>> ^entr0py:

It's not a game either if you have to wear make-up and look pretty to win. Anything with an aesthetics component to the mark isn't a sport or a game. It's an art. Like ballet. And this art is scary and ugly.

You know that would include all figure skating, the most popular event of the Winter Olympics. Let them have their fun, and let us not feel obligated to care about it. That's my attitude to all sports and dancing.

I don't understand how some of these sports are still considered sports.
dressage, synchronized swimming, floor exercises.... It's ridiculous

I thought these were games, not sports... I don't remember it being called Olympic Sports, just Olympic Games

This USED to be an Olympic Sport - What Happened??

messenger says...

Gone. It's athletic, but so is ballet. If it has music, it's out. If it has pretty props, it's out. If the athletes are expected to make delicate hand movements, dance steps, or bow after, it's out. If aesthetics make up any part of the final assessment, it's out.>> ^ant:

Hahah! That sport was the laughing stock of the Olympics. Any sport that requires you to look good doing it isn't a sport. Period. Those aren't athletes. They're dancers. Glad they're gone. Figure skating should be next.

How about gymnastics?

Sesame Street Pulls Controversial Katy Perry Duet with Elmo

Krupo says...

As noted in the description and by a couple of comments, "But, as TMZ notes, Perry wasn't actually half-naked -- her outfit featured a flesh-colored mesh top that went all the way up to her neck, like a figure-skating costume."

Honestly, if anything, I think the Children's Workshop must be glad for the hit of viral marketing they're getting out of this. Go *femme

mind blowing breakdancing. what more do you want?

MilkmanDan says...

I know roughly jack shit about breakdancing, but that was fun to watch.

My only problem with judged Olympic-type events is that a routine that looks fantastic to a new viewer is often outranked by more technically difficult routines that don't looks as amazing to the untrained eye. This is true for figure skating, gymnastics, snowboarding, motocross, and on and on. I don't mean to suggest that judges should rate performances by audience reactions, but it can be incredibly frustrating to listen to the expert commentary:

(analyst) Oh, he was incredibly sloppy in the last quarter of his final revolution there...
(me) Dude, that guy just spun around in the air some number of times that I couldn't even accurately count while suspending himself with his pinky. Sometimes I fall down when I put my pants on one leg a time in the morning.

40oz Drinking and Chicken Wing Eating Contest

spawnflagger says...

I must have missed this event during the NBC coverage of the winter olympics...
was it on USA network or something ?

yet another sport where Russia was expected to get gold, but Canada came in for the last minute upset. First figure skating, then hockey, and now wing and 40 ?
