Games that think more gameplay mechanics equals more fun

shagen454 says...

Agree. Can't stand all the superfluous fetch quests - at this point I'm even sick of inventory management. In games like Fallout, or Elder Scrolls, Witcher - these days I hardly even loot the corpses because I'm so sick of it after 25+ years.

One of the best games I've played recently was - What Remains of Edith Finch - a linear, "walking simulator" which implements innovative/interesting design solutions to drive the story forward, very detailed and very tightly designed - kind of on the opposite spectrum of open-world RPGs - but very awesome.

Can we clean these comments out somehow? (Wtf Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

I tried to quickly take care of this problem with the few minutes I could squeeze into my day job this morning.

The problem was just that the comments were so long the server request was timing out while fetching.

I have now just deleted all his comments. Problem solved.

Thanks for the persistence, @eric3579 and everyone else!

Evan - Sandy Hook Promise

IMO the idea that you can identify signs in someone you don't personally know (as this video seems to show) is far fetched. Friends and family are much different as the signs are multiple and more recognizable. The idea you will see and take notice of multiple signs from someone you don't know well, seems like a bit of a reach. Just my unprofessional opinion.

Why ALIENS Is the Mother of All Action Movies

dannym3141 says...

I have only one complaint. Calling "Get away from her you bitch!" the most famous line underplays the fact that this film is chock full of the most quotable lines in film history.

Compared to just about anything Apone says, also Hudson and many from Hicks, that line is pedestrian.

-"I like to keep this handy, for close encounters."
-"How do I get out of this chicken-shit outfit?"
-"Game over man... game over!"
-"Well why don't you put her in charge?!"
-"Me and my team of ultimate bad asses are here to protect you!... We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks," etc.
-"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit... it's the only way to be sure."
-"A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade - I LOVE THE CORPS!"
-"What do you want me to do, fetch your slippers for you?" etc. and "Look into my eye......"

I'll stop before I end up pasting the entire script.

Edit: One final complaint - i consider Aliens to be tarnished by associations with modern wonder woman, which IMO was indicative of the abject failure of rich Hollywood males to produce a worthy female superhero.

The Danish School Where Children Play With Knives

Lukio says...

There are some schools like this in Germany as well. Usually children that have issues like attention deficit disorder or do not fit into a normal school (problem child) will attend to such a "Forest school" (Waldschule). There are studies that it benefits development as the change in scenery from the busy city life helps the children adjust. It is definitely not very common and children still need to attend regular classes.

To say it has a flair of "anti science" is a bit far fetched as these schools often teach a lot about the local flora and fauna, do stuff like looking at water samples under a microscope or take earth probes. Sure it is not super scientific, it probably compares to what most kids would do as boy scouts - except it's part of the school's education program. For some kids this approach is better at fueling their scientific curiosity than in a regular school environment where they have many other issues to deal with.

People who disagree with science generally don't come out so well in the end--see anti-vaxxers, climate change deniers, etc. I'd change my mind about these kindergartens if there were solid science behind them.

Turning the vacuum on is the difficult part

dannym3141 says...

The dad also says try it in the wall now and he goes straight to it without any realisation. Almost as though he's gone to plug it in and the dad has stopped him and told him to start it like a mower while he fetched the camera.

Pet Emu Playing Fetch With Little Girl

Pet Emu Playing Fetch With Little Girl

newtboy says...

"Fetch" implies that the Emu brings it back. It really just does a little "I found it, right here" dance and waits for it's human to pick it up and throw it again. More 'Emu chases ball with it's little girl'.
Cute, but not exactly 'fetch'. ;-)

Why Are Aeroplane Wings Angled Backwards?

radx says...

About the X-1 being the first manned vehicle to break the sound barrier: there are records of Bf 109Fs surpassing 950km/h TAS in a dive when they tried to solve the issue of elevator and aileron lock-ups at very high speeds. I wouldn't call it far-fetched to assume that both G10 and K4 could surpass Mach 1 in a high-altitude dive without the wings shearing off. Alas, no proof. Just an interesting bit of aviation.
