This Dancer is a Wonderful Insult to Gravity

robbersdog49 says...

I'm not feeling it. He's good, but male and female gymnasts are very different, and he's doing the female bit. I don't mean that pole dancing is a women only thing, just that he's doing it like a girl. Look at the differences between men and women's floor work in gymnastics. Men need to be a lot more powerful in their routines, but this guy isn't doing anything a good female dancer couldn't.

He's good, but I've seen female pole routines that show at least as much strength and way more stamina.

I'd love to see what one of these guys could do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2407_uPHpIk

(Fast forward to 6:00 to see the routines start).

What? Render time? I'd guess minutes at most. C'mon, this is 2013, not 1993.

But you're right: Oculus Rift + This = Star Trek Holodeck in real life. Sports is possibly the best application for this combination, since the area of play is limited and well defined. Let me build upon your vision of the future.

It would require the ability to change your camera angle even when the "video" is playing. They'd also need to thoroughly map all audio sources on the playing feild. Heck, I'm sure there are tons of other massive technical hurdles that I haven't even thought of, but if you will, imagine this:

Go to an empty baseball field (or other large, flat area) during a time when you can be assured you'll be totally alone. You'd need to set up some kind of markers, four in total, non-coplaner. They would track your movement on the field in 3 dimensions. You might also set up a large circle fence around the outter edge of the field with sticks and string, to make sure you don't run into a tree or a building, since you'll be totally blind once you don your Oculus Rift. Then, put on the Rift, and play the video with your vantage point on the field as the camera angle. You'd be holding in your hand a remote control which can pause, rewind, or fast forward.

You could literally be IN THE GAME, AS IT PLAYS, with the ability to run along side your favorite football player as he runs into the end zone, seeing everything he sees, hearing everything he hears. Or stand in the endzone, and watch your favorite plays from every imaginable angle as though you were really there. Rewind the "video" and watch again from the vantage point of the quarterback, or the referee, or the coach.

There is no higher form of sports immersion. It is Nirvana.

The question is: how long did it take to render? Is it hours or even days on large render farm for each clip? That might limit the practicality, certainly for sports broadcasts at least.

On the other hand, I hope in 10 or 15 years, I can watch sports and put the camera wherever I want in real time or put on my VR headset and watch as though I were standing next to the pitcher or sitting on the wing of a race car. That probably will happen and that is an AWESOME prospect.

Black Christians = Uncle Toms

@MilkmanDan-Pretty sure the most effective squelching of the rise of the Nation of Islam and the push for conversion from the slave-master's religion was achieved by the CIA, (insert covertly shadowed organizations within the labyrinth here) pumping high-grade opiates into the ghettos of all major United States cities-Fast-forward to 1980, and crack cocaine takes what's left of a effectual black population on a path to self-actualization down the road leading right back to the master's plantation.

That the black activism of the 60's scared the holy shit outta the control apparatus is best evidenced in the assassination of MLK, Malcolm X, (many, many others) and the string of cocksuckers disguised as presidents to follow Eisenhower, a legacy which continues to become more farcical with each movement of the second-hand on yer grandpa's pocket-watch.

Animation dance done right

bareboards2 says...

This vid is from the auditions, not the competition itself. I agree with you -- I get so mad when they throw in a reaction shot.

They don't do judge reactions during the competition. They have annoying camera choices instead.

I've never timed the talking. The first competition show has ten couples and at least one group dance in two hours. They also show the first rehearsal, as the dancers meet the choreographer. And I have a fast forward button for the true filler crap.

What can I say? This one show is my Summer Passion. I throw my doors open to all my friends to watch. We rewind the dances we love and watch them two, sometimes three times.

The show is about trust and community and respect, unlike some other competition shows I have watched two minutes of.

But if you don't have a fast forward or a rewind button or a relatively large TV screen and a room full of people cheering, and crying, well, my love for it has a support system.

@bareboards2 It's hard for me to pay attention to the dancing when they constantly cut to the judges. Why would you do that? I absolutely hate these type of shows. I'm sure the talent is fine but arent you subjected to 30 min(its a guess) or more of background story before seeing a couple minutes of the dancing or singing or whatever the shows about. I find it all very annoying.

Ron Paul "When...TRUTH Becomes Treasonous!"

VoodooV says...

They're stuck on this romantic idea that they are in the same party as Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was a Republican, So they're a Republican. Lincoln was arguably the greatest president we ever had, so obviously if they're in the same party as Lincoln, they're great too...right? right?

Doesn't matter that if Lincoln were alive today, he'd align more with Democrats. He certainly couldn't win an election as a Republican today. Same thing with Reagan.

I know a guy at work just like him. It just simply doesn't seem to matter how many despicable things current Republicans do that he admits he disagrees with. He admits Romney, Palin, and Bachmann and etc are idiots. He's just been completely indoctrinated to believe that Republicans are always the good guys and Democrats are always the bad guys. You can just tell how frustrated he is because of how he can't reconcile the conflict.

He's a closet Democrat (or at the very least an independent), but he's just so completely stuck on the "Reps good, Dems bad" indoctrination. It was how he was raised. Too afraid of pissing off his parents and just never questioned authority.

It's truthiness at its worst. He's clinging to an idea that doesn't exist anymore.

The names are irrelevant. Good ideas always eventually rise to the top and bad ideas eventually fall. May take forever and have lots of setbacks on the way. Fast forward another couple hundred years and even if the names "Democrat" and "Republican" still exist as parties, you're an idiot if you think they'll mean exactly the same thing as they do now.

TDS 9/29/11 - Wayne's World

Darkhand says...

I have to say I agree with Wayne on this.

If you asked Wayne "are you happy Obama allows guns in national parks and on Amtrak Trains?" I'm sure his reply would be

"Yes I am; but the current legislation on limiting ammo clips/magazines and banning assault rifles is just wrong. The national registry is a conspiracy to blah blah blah"

It's like finding videos of my ex-wife giving me a television for X-mas and then fast forwarding to the day we got divorced. Of course I'll look like a Moron but you missed out on all the context in between.

Squirrel Launcher Gets Rid Of Pesky Squirrels in .5 seconds

chingalera says...

This video, or one like it was sifted about 5 years ago to much fanfare and many votes....Fast-forward to the now, and animal cruelty comments....The world is either becoming a kinder, gentler, peaceful place or worse, people are more concerned about the well-being of a resilient, mite-infested tree-rat (able to absorb shocks like a fall from great heights, hello??) than that of the human race being fist-fucked by a small minority of the same...Maybe this one's more you speed:

http://videosift.com/video/Squirrel-Takes-a-Seat-to-Eat or this one
http://videosift.com/video/Squirrel-Go-Round

Kinna cruel but I'm guessing the squirrels' no worse for the wear and they do invariably, come back for more. Personally, I prefer this one:

and the water-sprinkler squirrel thingy, which I can't find here.

The latest YouTube embeds (Sift Talk Post)

chingalera says...

Allowing "full-screen" mode for me but I did notice a glitch in that they will not allow some embeds to be fast-forward or reversed.

For all the tweaks YT offers with their interface I still only use a few....dotdude should chime-in here, he stays abreast of the new features.

EDIT: more glitches...Playing an embed here on VS then pausing it resume caused the volume control on the vid to become functionless..frozen-
