Between Two Ferns and The Lonely Island

Fight Club Philosophies

dystopianfuturetoday says...

I feel like this film is more complicated than just an anti commercialist screed. Ed Norton's nameless character chooses an extremely handsome, charming and fashionable movie star to be the vessel for his anti-commercial, anti-corporate persona. Is this done on purpose to suggest some kind of internal contradiction? Also, his group eventually becomes a fascist and violent paramilitary operation. In the end, the narrator kills off his imaginary friend. So what are we to make of Tyler Durden? To me, the film feels like it's also about ego, masculinity, extremism, growing up, the need to belong and the intoxicating effects of power, as seen through the eyes of a cheerfully misanthropic Chuck Palaniuk. Whatever Palaniuk and Fincher's intentions were, I do love this movie. I bet the book would clear some of this up for me. Anyone who has read the book want to address these issues?

Done and Done.>> ^Grimm:

I feel like this from the YT desc should be mentioned here...
Alan Isaacman's speech about Freedom and the futility of Censorship as read verbatim by Ed Norton in the People vs Larry Flynt (1996). Easily one of the greatest movie speeches of all time, it was actually said in the courtroom as Isaacman's closing argument and obviously fell on deaf ears as Flynt was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Flynt is obviously no patriot or hero, but Isaacman is, and this speech is brilliant.

BTW, did you know that Ryan Gosling started out in the Mickey Mouse Club with Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears? I certainly didn't!

He isn't.
Project selection is as much of the craft of acting as the method of acting, itself.

Anyway, I think Gosling was really good in this, but I wouldn't say he's a great actor.
The Notebook? Really?
Ed Norton, on the other hand...

That's like saying Leo Dicaprio isn't a great actor. The Titanic, really??

That's why Ed Norton was in Incredible Hulk 2 then I guess?

I especially like the description of Jew's seeking the Ein Sof... "nothingness without end."

Your Opinion is Requested on a Court Case. (Politics Talk Post)

quantumushroom says...

What say you of this court case? Is Mr. Barskey wrong because he should be following the law because, well, it's the law?

He broke the law. Whether the law is just or unjust is immaterial to his case.

Is his decorum reprehensible therefore he's deserving of punishment?

I observed no 'extra' punishment for Mr. Barskey appearing sloppy and adversarial. I award him points for sounding like Ed Norton.

Or, are speeding laws ridiculous because it's a victimless crime?

Speeding tickets are not preemptive, they are a reaction to the unlawful act of speeding. Speeding is not a victimless crime, it creates unnecessarily higher risks of injury or death and destruction of property from an already inherently dangerous activity. It's entirely possible that certain speed limits and their excessive fines are designed mainly for revenue enhancement (like those "unlawful" ticket quotas) but that's not Mr. Barskey's battle.

Is a $200 fine appropriate for speeding?

There are no universal guidelines, but 20 MPH over the limit is usually bad, and even the most forgiving cops can't work around that.

Do you think it's fair courts can add a penalty to a penalty?

Yes, because time equals money.

As Obi-wan Kenobi said, "You can't win, but there are alternatives to fighting." Mr. Barskey could have asked for a lesser fine based on any number of variables. He could also have requested a payment plan if the $200 fine would be too much to pay all at once. While well within his rights, he's giving the "liberty movement" a bad name with these head-butting antics.

The State is a Beast, no doubt, and a necessary evil. Because the fksticks in my state's government--like all governments at all levels--spent more money than they had, one of their "solutions" was to double all license and tag registration fees. ALL the people are being punished during a recession for politicians' spending addiction (aka "biz as usual"). Life remains unfair.

Idiot Judge Says "Black Hole" is Racist

White says...

here here, sniper. boy i really hate it when any race/religion/gender fights for special treatment while claiming to fight for equality.

alright here we go. this is probably going to sound very racist, but i dont mean it like that. i got it from American History X, so get mad at Ed Norton, not me, but black people should really stop complaining about the struggle their ancestors went through. its a period in history that no one really likes to talk about, white people are sorry. really we are. the point is THEY didn't go through that struggle, their ANCESTORS did. and that was, what, 100-350 (please correct me if I'm wrong) years ago? the Jewish people have been persecuted for over 2000 years. they are still getting persecuted in the middle east to this day. i have yet to talk to one of my Jewish friends and hear him talk about the Jewish struggle. its about time that Black people start treating THEMSELVES equal to white people, and realize they can shape their own lives, and stop blaming the white man.

and this Hip Hop society isn't helping. you get people talking about how cool it is to be from the streets, so people raised in a middle class setting (black and white) are walking around trying to look and act like they live a hard life, until they talk about their PS3s and 360s.

i'm really sorry, but its time to move on.

...I'M NOT RACIST!
