A Serious Plea from a Fledgling Member (Cult Talk Post)

gwiz665 says...

The more eclectic and obscure something is, the less chance that people will watch it. The more eye-popping the title, the higher chance people will watch it. Some people don't want to think this, but that's the way it works.

Once in a blue moon, your super obscure video will catch a lucky break, stars align and the right people see it at the right time and it powers through - once you get over a certain number of votes, it's sorta self-reinforcing, usually.

An "ok" video, can be propelled to lots and lots of votes with the right timing, title and tags. Like @dag suggests, while we're technically not allowed to vote by member name, it does have an effect on whether or not you watch a sift. Some people you know have good taste have a larger chance of having their sift watched by you, people you have no idea about, you look at the title, thumbnail, number of comments and decide "am I gonna watch this or not". We all have an attention span of nanoseconds, so the stuff better hit well and hit hard, or people skip it.

Or you can just sift something with cats.

I had no problems with this music. Got an example of which music you would use?

I was EXTREMLY turned off by the music. WhIch is what I did with the volume.

Which music do you prefer then? Rap/Hip-hop? Heavy Metal? Ugh.

No I have a very eclectic music collection and liking, However with this video this music just goes way over the mushy feel good puff piece that it is, which is fine, its a good story. Although to put it bluntly the music makes it "gawdy" just way over the top and not fitting. Kind of a jack ass reply on your part though, so what If I where to like either of those mentioned more then I do this Micheal Bolton love fest music.

Nonono, this is the heart of this place nowadays.

I know kronos isn't here right now, but I total agree with him. It doesn't matter how many votes your vids get, it's all about eclectic taste. Look at sifters like Farhad, Schmawy or Eklek - they're the heart of this place and they don't really care how many votes their vids get, they only care about spreading knowledge, obscure vids or their personal likings. I have great respect for that kind of thinking.

DragonForce - Through the Fire and Flames

what ...the....FUCK did i just watch?
this video had me mouthing off like don rickles on a crystal meth bender but i'll curb my urge to eviscerate this....*cough*.....music?
talent aside...and lets be up front..these guys have some talent but the whole "arpeggio/melodic/overload with lyrical operatic overtones" was already done by jason becker and marty friedman in the 80's.if you like these guys you will most likely enjoy CACOPHONY.
i'll upvote on the bizzar factor but not on content.this song is...yeesh.../cringes.
meh../shrugs..maybe its just me but it seems they should be played at 33 RPM's and not 44 RPM's.
and i am by no means a purists,my music tastes are extremely eclectic but i'll listen to death metal before being subjected to this.
sorry guitarwolf but i cant join ya in appreciating this band.
seems you really like them.

King Arthur's Men - Busking in Glasgow

Seric says...

http://www.myspace.com/kingarthursmen

Myspace: Coming together in the streets of Glasgow, King Arthur's Men was formed by three students at that time enrolled in the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama studying varying types of Music and coming from all different parts of the world. The band now consists of four musicians, acting almost as a collective. Alastair Caplin, on Fiddle and Percussion, is a full time musician and plays with other bands such as Alastair Roberts, and the John Langan Band. Alastair hails from the Isle of Lewis. Bryan Benner, our vocalist and guitarist (and on percussion) is currently studying for his BMus in Vocal Studies, while also playing full time with King Arthur's Men (unless he's off gallivanting across America..). Bryan grew up in America in Florida and California. Hazen Metro is on the BA - Scottish Music, Piping course and is studying Scotland's vast traditions and music with a focus on the highland bagpipe. Hazen grew up in the small North-Eastern, mountainous state of Vermont. Our final and newest member is John Langan, who is also a full time musician, playing gigs with The John Langan Band and being Glasgow's most rocking busker. John plays Guitar and Percussion with us, bringing styles ranging from Klezmer to Scottish Folk.
Combined we are King Arthur's Men, a truly powerful and eclectic collective.

Ooh, thanks for the 80's treats! Being a child of the 80's there's not much I DON'T like from that time!

Big fan of that stuff! Thanks for bringing that to the sift.

And thanks for the compliment!

this tune has been a fave of mine for a long time.
i am a former nudey bar DJ and this song was on my "must play" list.
got all the girls into it,even the hip-hop booty girls and the raver girls.

What Should the Queue Escape Level Be? (User Poll by dag)

gwiz665 says...

And obviously later introduce the tiered rewards, so that a really popular video gives the sifter a lot, and a more eclectic one still gives SOMETHING back, and only a really bad one gives nothing back.

Er, 15 votes to get sifted? (Sift Talk Post)

rasch187 says...

The front page doesn't get clustered with new vids when 15 votes are required. That's a good thing imo. But, as several people have pointed out, it makes it much more difficult to sift eclectic and obscure vids. RedSky made a great point about how the 15 limit could mean that only mainstream vids get sifted, and that would be a shame.

12 votes to get sifted sounds like a good compromise imo. That way the frontpage traffic would slow down a little bit compared to the 10 votes limit, and lesser known, more obscure vids would still have a good chance at getting sifted without relying on too much *begging and *promoting.

RE:RE: Arts & Crafts

hmmm I just don't see the beaty-part, apart from "huh, neat idea", as in I get what his intention is, I just don't think the product is very succesful. I can understand setting limits for oneself to encourage creativity, by choosing a difficult medium or location, for instance.
When I look at the cloud in the video, though, I just think "here's a guy who is overstepping his capabilities - study fireworks for a couple of years and try again".

But then I'm sort of grumpy & eclectic when it comes to art, and very suspicious of things that get critics' acclaim.
