glenn greenwald takes morning joe to task

If you are, then I am too.

What I'm about to say may sound callous, but it is based in fact.

Terrorists are not a threat.

The number of people killed by terrorism (while obviously a tragedy for those involved) is basically statistical noise and is dwarfed by the numbers killed by smoking or alcohol (or gun violence for that matter, but I don't really want to go there).

Hell, in the 3 months following sep 2001, more people where killed in auto accidents as a result of fear of flying than were killed on the planes!

Is California Becoming A Police State?

chingalera says...

There should be more transgender police people....and they should hire dwarfs as well, make a special unit with all teeny-coppers. Hire Asian women to replace all male uniformed patrol officers and then, after changes like these, maybe people will begin to trust the fiiiinnne members of our fiiiiine law enforcement communities in this great country.

Lord Tywin reveals his knowledge of Arya's ruse - S2E7

MilkmanDan says...

Something that I don't get about Tywin (book or movie version):

He's cold, logical, practical, intelligent, cunning. His relationships with his children mostly make sense given the way he operates.

Cersei advanced his family name by marrying King Robert, which was good. But she makes stupid decisions, takes unnecessary risks, and arrogantly thinks that none of this will catch up with her. Tywin correctly identifies her key weakness being that she thinks she is much more clever than she actually is.

Jamie could be a reasonably useful chess piece in Tywin's arsenal, but by Lannister standards he isn't as cunning and "big picture" intelligent as Tywin is, or even Cersei. I'd say Jamie knows his own limitations in that regard way better than Cersei though. During the Targaryen reign, his position in the Kingsguard would have been potentially useful, but that turns for the worse when he sullies the family name by becoming the "Kingslayer", even if his actions were justified. His Kingsguard position and skillset in general become much less useful during Robert's rule, which further hurts his relationship with Tywin. All still makes sense from a cold, calculating perspective.

Then you get to Tyrion. Tywin has an antagonistic relationship with Tyrion, and seems to refuse to see that Tyrion is the best bet to take over the reins of House Lannister after Tywin himself is gone. I know that it is suggested that Tywin's bias against Tyrion comes from the combination of A) him "killing" his mother in childbirth and B) being born a "freak" dwarf. I have a hard time with that because I see Tywin as being too cold, logical, and pragmatic to let either of those issues cloud his judgement.

So Tyrion "killed" his mother (Tywin's wife). Perhaps that event had a profound effect on Tywin, but considering the way he plays his children as pawns on his chessboard, it seems more in his character for him to have viewed his wife that way also. Especially considering the normal state of noble marriages being primarily chosen to maximize political gain in the setting. Plus, mothers dying during childbirth probably wouldn't be an exceptionally uncommon thing in the setting either.

And Tyrion being a dwarf? So what -- Tywin only cares about what you can do to advance the family name. Tyrion could easily be groomed to take over as family mastermind while keeping Cersei, Jamie, or one of Cersei's children as the public face of the family. Pay no attention to the man, er, dwarf behind the curtain.

I guess I just find Tywin's relationship with Tyrion to be the one thing about his character that feels ... off, at least to me. I feel like Tywin would be more ready to give Tyrion some opportunities to prove himself, and less subjective about judging his performance in those situations.

This is beautiful and if you're tripping over the spectacle of it, just forget about that for a few minutes and try and feel what they're feeling. Be human for a second, you know that emotional being that existed before the all knowing fact checking internets ruled our way of life?

Just because you don't understand their reality doesn't discredit the authenticity of their love. You will NEVER understand what it is like to be them but their love is meaningful and the ability to show this type of unashamed honesty in front of the world is a TALENT. And it is freeing. Are you free? Really? Hahahahaha

People try so hard to dismantle the beauty of emotional reality for their constantly refined objective truth -- BUT I'd rather be in love and feel what that means in my heart than know a single fact about the mechanics of our universe.

It really is as simple as that for me. Love will always move me and I will die happy for knowing that. Not even the greatest feat of mankind could dwarf the concept of sharing love with another intellect. My obsessions and ambitions are firmly rooted and actualized, but love shakes me to the core as to make all else meaningless. It makes me forget my purpose.

If this is what Christians talk about when they aren't being socio/political judges, and God is love, then I am down with that.

Raise your fist and resist, but don't resist love. It's the only thing that matters.

Your ideals, his politics, WTF? What you are saying is that you chose an extreme example (like this news organization did) as your offering, inserting through the filter of your experiences in your society as described, what? You obviously have no desire to see anyone with guns, or any society in which this could possibly happen, and you'd be interested in selling a wondrous adjustment or replacement based upon what? Your personal experiences and world view?? Your own country's model for how to get along?? It's sounds just as pontificous any passionate nut job, right left or center.

Now focus on some lobbies wanting to make money, describe their motivations using crude imagery to make what point ??(knowing fuck-all about the gun lobbies in the U.S. I'd hasten to guess you are pulling shit out of your own ass??)?

A point everyone seems to miss is lost in endless banter over this gun issue in a country whose real problems dwarf how many and what type of boomsticks people have.

The people who control policy, who have worked hard to bankrupt this country and rape her human resources, drug them, offer them more laws to create an illusion of safety and fairness? Fuck you.

Problem isn't guns, mine or yours, or the ones you poor fucks in countries who have decided for you that guns are bad for you. The problem is that the world is full of the most part, of ineffectual, programmable, inept automotons when it comes to exercising their rights under natural laws, AS evidenced for me, in the up-voting of grinter's little passionate episode here...

My country is full of broken people, desperate people, seasoned with an inordinate amount of total fuck-ups, and I have to watch the shit in slow-motion while it gets even more fun...with guns, with a political system totally fucking retarded holding her citizens an economic hostage to special interests dwarfing any gun lobby's.

Is YOUR country broken grinter, or have you decided that you are satisfied with elected officials. we don;t have elected officials anymore. We have criminals.

WORLDWIDE, we're headed for a radical democracy or some comfortable, tolerable, illusory freedoms under a Nuevo-Fascist Global Cuntfest at this point.
Fuuuuck! Get a clue!? all I have to do is watch how utterly retarded these hearings are(kangaroo-court-style) to gauge the breakdown of this motherfucker...

My ideals include a society where this sort of thing is much less likely, if not impossible.
That is not politically motivated, that is motivated by compassion for the people and world around me.

If you want to talk bring up the 'gun control bandwagon', now that's political. That is the gun lobby's wet dream cum to sticky fruition. The only thing that sells guns better than picatinny rails and fear of crime/zombies, is fear that someone is going to tell us that we can't play with guns anymore.

Plural of roof is roofs, not rooves

While true, it is a strange and illogical part of the language as it stands today. We pretty much pluralize every other word ending in "fs" to "ves". Dwarf/dwarves, staff/staves, scarf/scarves, life/lives, hoof/hooves, half/halves, calf/calves, and on and on. It's easier to enunciate this way. If enough people agree and use rooves, it will eventually be legitimized by dictionaries.
