Interesting concept: the Unnecessariat
"Here’s the thing: from where I live, the world has drifted away. We aren’t precarious, we’re unnecessary. The money has gone to the top. The wages have gone to the top. The recovery has gone to the top. And what’s worst of all, everybody who matters seems basically pretty okay with that. The new bright sparks, cheerfully referred to as “Young Gods” believe themselves to be the honest winners in a new invent-or-die economy, and are busily planning to escape into space or acquire superpowers, and instead of worrying about this, the talking heads on TV tell you its all a good thing- don’t worry, the recession’s over and everything’s better now, and technology is TOTES AMAZEBALLS!"

Looks like the next Tokyo Drift has amazing graphics.
Look out Drumph ... Ted likes to eat hair
He (She) needs to make a song using all these politicians before they drift away.
I LOVE BAD LIP READING.

This Is Why You Don't Go Close to the Ocean During a Storm
It's amusing how cruel people can unwittingly be (on YouTube) making fun of the elderly man being sucked into the sea to die and their misplaced vitriol at the disabled person who is unable to help. It's not so much that an old guy almost died and a crippled person couldn't do anything; it's the the irony in the comments due to people not knowing the truth. Then again, maybe it could also be a skit like the disabled fat guy from Little Britain?
Certainly, it is funny, despite the cruelty in laughing at other people's misery. It could be a gag in an Adam Sandler movie, except the old guy would be Bob Barker and he'd be pulled out to sea and heard cursing as he drifts and blinks out in the sunset. *Plink!*
Everyone would laugh and then Adam Sandler would kiss a blond woman, probably Drew Barrymore, while the sun sets and we do the Looney Tunes fade out, with Porky Pig interrupting with a hand gesture, "A bi-di-a-bi-di-a-bi-di-abi-di-that's all folks!"

Lewis Black reads a new ex-Mormon's rant
I've been reading these news reports closely.
I am afraid that the people resigning aren't "core" Mormons, with temple recommends. I am afraid they are people who have already drifted away from the church and now they are making a political statement that isn't going to make a difference to the church leadership.
One person was quoted, in another news report I read, that they hadn't gone to church in 17 years and they were resigning today.
Having said that -- I am 100% convinced that the Mormon Church will eventually allow gay people full membership. Because, even if few of these resigning are "core" members of the church, more and more gay kids are coming out of the closet. And as they become more visible, as they are more and more accepted as human beings "made in God's image", it will be harder and harder for parents' to choose their church over their children.
And there is a mechanism for change in the church -- hence full membership for blacks when it became impossible to continue the overt 1800's racism of the originators.
It's coming for the Mormons. When loads more people quit and take their 10% tithing with them... well, the Mormons are excellent business people. They aren't going to cut themselves off from their revenue stream.
I say it will be within 30 years. Maybe even sooner.
oh, and some good news....

After Hours: The Terrifying Truth about Doc Brown (BTTF)
I spent October 21st skateboarding with the wife. Ahhh, 1950s Tony Hawk, thank you for inspiring the future -- even if you didn't make hoverboards a reality.
But really, the fun of skateboarding is in the resistance that the wheels have on the ground. Being able to propel oneself forward and back; tick tacking, drifting, ollieooping (hah), and other fun maneuvers not possible with a hoverboard. I truly prefer wheels, berrings, and the donuts & trucks which support them.

Self-driving, drifting DeLorean
Yes they did.
Found a press release.
http://www.renovomotors.com/marty-press-release/
"MARTY was built in collaboration with Renovo Motors, an automotive start-up based in Silicon Valley that specializes in building advanced electric vehicle technology. Working closely together gave the Stanford team early access to a brand new platform derived from Renovo’s electric supercar that delivers 4,000 pound-feet from on-motor gearboxes to the rear wheels in a fraction of a second – allowing precise control of the forces required to drift."
Did they turn it into an electric car too?

I got you @Baristan...

Did they turn it into an electric car too? It looked like it in the build, but there is some motor noise at the end of the drift (too much loud music during the drift to hear), so I'm confused.
GameSoundCon 2010: "Introduction to Game Audio"
Oh! And of course: Demoscene!
Demoscene is similar to chiptunes, but spawned about a decade (?) before the NES really popularized game tunes, and came out of Europe's, uh, "demo scene" (computer programming demos usually focused around visuals with accompanying soundtracks).
If you're ever into that kind of thing, I can recommend Nectarine Radio (scenemusic.net), though they occasionally drift into euro-crap disco-pop, they're essentially a searchable/playable database of the history of European (primarily) computer game soundtracks and demo music. Also a very strange, unique genre that shares a significant amount with the game medium!
House Of Dodge
Same here, the new show is barely palatable. I hope this drift slowly back into the Colbert Report format, and for crying out loud, get rid of that sideshow/band!
"If that's the standard, then congress is loaded with quality candidates."
...I haven't been real keen on Colbert on the late show yet, but maybe that line marks a turning point. Genius, comedy gold!
