Sea of Jellyfish in Denmark

Sagemind says...

I had to swim through Jellyfish like this in Mexico... They completely surrended us while we were out snorkeling against some cliffs, our only escape was to take a deep breath, and dive down under them and swim as hard as we could, then come up in the middle of them fast and dive again, so our wake would push them away. They were attracted to the movement so we had to come up fast, gasp, and dive again, we made it past them after six or seven dives and quite a few stings.

Happy 8th Siftiversary (Sift Talk Post)

Thanks for that Lilithia (indirectly promoting my cooking contest!) we dig prizes and contests as well, Pumpkinandstorm won a Videosift T-shirt from me a few months back(which Dag donated when I suggested an earlier VIDEO contest), when I concocted a previous cooking contest FOR the videosift after taking over the cooking channel for another user-Another user actually won first prize, and gifted it to P&S further fostering the spirit of this unique online community, which shows how much it means to some folks to spread the love around here...(or, that some folks just didn't want some stodgy T-Shirt

Encouraging here more sifters to start their own contests-Shipping stuff from down-under is probably pretty cost-prohibitive, eh Dag???

Speaking of which, I would love to get a couple more entries into the cookie-contest, but if the 3 entries so far are all there are, that means everyone who enters gets cookies and prizes. AND remember, your entries WILL be judged by former strippers and female bartenders and filmed for upload to the site....YAY! Everybody wins!

Americans Taste Test Australian Snacks

newtboy says...

I'll personally approve of (and mirror) nearly all of that except the Mar-mite and Vegemite, (I reserve my opinion of Mar-mite, I didn't try it when I was down under) the self back patting/knee jerk insult, and the thanking of someone else's 'invisible friend'.
Can you guess which of those things irks me the most? ;-)

No, I'm representative of someone who thinks for themselves and for the creative spark that's left this house of cards circle-jerk of back-patters and party-liners. We also have Mar-mite and Vegemite jars in the fridge, Kylie Minogue's discography among the music selections in the hard-drive, and have tripped-balls playing the didgeridoo on several occasions.

We can also throat-sing, change a diaper, prepare delicious meals, compose music, be both a jerk and a sweetheart, clean a fish, pan for gold, grow vegetables, train dogs (and cats), service automobiles and small engines, and build a PC from parts down to the computer-supply store. Just your average human being.

Thank god for insects, Aussies and Yanks, and newts.

How do you feel about the current promote system? (User Poll by Hybrid)

I'm behind these two suggestions. I'm in my OWN timezone [Holy sunscreen ... I'd be a day person if I moved down under!]

> the lack of a handy "RECENTLY PROMOTED" tab all it's own.

Australia's Gun Control Program

Sepacore says...

This video contains disingenuous information. Those statistics are completely false.

@chingalera It's working a lot better than the current USA situation. Here's a few legitimate facts relating to the content in that video.

1. You can still buy guns (pistols, rifles, shotguns), just not the ridiculously unjustified mass human slaying variants.
2. It's better controlled with systems setup to decrease the chance of consistently unstable minds getting hold of guns of any type.
3. Gun homicides were increasing leading up to the gun control (1996), from that peak to now, it's about a 59% drop.
4. 1996-2006 about 65% drop in gun suicides.
5. Robberies involving guns dropped significantly.
6. There was no increase in home invasions.
7. In the 10 years leading up to the gun control there were 11 mass shootings.. since gun control went into affect, there have been 0.

Homicide weapon statistics (image): Guns vs Knives from 1989/90 to 2006/7
Quick answer: 50% drop for guns, 30% rise for knives
http://aic.gov.au/statistics/homicide/weapon.html

"A 2011 letter published in the British Medical Journal by Simon Chapman, a professor of public health from the University of Sydney, observed that the U.S. had 14.4 times the population of Australia but 141 times as as many deaths from firearms in 2008 as Australia and 238 times the rate of firearms-related homicide."

If the current ratio's are even remotely similar to this quote, then Americans can't say jack about the Australian statistics.

@charliem Good links mate.
