Going to the Doctor in America

Raigen says...

Just read through this whole damn thread. And damn was that tiring. It's been a while since I've spoken up about anything on ye olde 'Sift, and now seems like a good time to do so.

Hi there, I'm a Type 1 Diabetic, and completely dependant on a regular dosage of insulin via a pump. I've been Diabetic for the last 15 years (diagnosed at age 15 during March Break of Grade 9). Thirteen years ago I was put on a pump because I was taking 9 shots a day to try and manage my wildly out of control "beetus". I was on a good diet as well, with few heavy carbs, but my body has a hard time maintaining a good balance of insulin sensitivity.

Now, on to the idea that Type 1 Diabetes can be "cured" or "treated" without insulin... Bollocks. Plain and simple.

Almost two years ago I set it upon myself to get fitter and healthier. I have never been overweight, just the less-than-average amount of fat I would say, but I was bored with how things were going and decided to try something new for my fitness routines; I went 100% Paleo.

Yeah, for almost two years I have rarely (and I mean rarely) eaten anything aside from fruits (one serving a day, two if I'm deserving of it) veggies, nuts and protein. Nothing processed, as little preservatives and chemicals as I can manage (I read *a lot* of nutritional labels when shopping for new foods) and I buy most of my meat and veggies from local farms and farmer's markets.

Has this helped my Diabetes? Extremely marginally. My insulin sensitivity has increased by a fraction... But that's it. Has my pancreas started creating its own insulin? Not a chance in hell.

While doing this whole paleo eating lifestyle I've also been doing a lot of intervals and weight training, and I've made some great strides. But back to the original idea of getting back to "natural" ways of living/eating and "curing" my diabetes? Yeah, no dice there, ladies and gentlemen.

I cannot be without my pump hooked up to my body for more than two hours before I would need to be sent to the hospital. Nothing I have done, with all my dedication, determination, and strong will, has made my Diabetes any "better" than it was when I was first diagnosed. If anything, it has taken more of my time and money and energy to get where I am now, with nothing to show for it from my condition's perspective.

If anyone, anyone at all, thinks they can cure Diabetes Mellitus by eating better and taking better care of themselves I'll suggest this: remove your pancreas and see if your body builds you a new one while you're testing out your hypothesis, because in all seriousness and fairness, that's what it's like to be Type 1. My body killed my pancreas making it a useless, lifeless organ. It will *never* awaken again to produce my own insulin without the help of true science and excellent doctors.

So, you know what I've done, and can take it from me that it will not cure you of your Type 1 Diabetes. Now I want you to tell me what I'm not doing to help "cure myself".

I'm an open-minded skeptic.

... But I'm not so open-minded that my brain will fall out.

How to Buy a New Car Without Getting Screwed

All this is great info. The best piece of advice the guy gives here, hands down, is: "don't rush". Everything else kind of follows afterward.
Proceed slowly, do research, and compare prices. I would generally call or walk into a place and say "I have this model for this price from this dealer. Can you beat it?" and 9/10 times they would, despite the fact that I would start the bidding at the so-called "invoice" price.
Then I'd leave and call/go to the next dealer and repeat the process. (In person is much better). I would do this for weeks, and revisit the same dealers multiple times. It's a slow process, but eventually you find that you're pulling their game over their own eyes by writing your own contract every time you visit.
I've met a few hard-core dealers through this method though. Dealers who treat me that same way. "Not willing to play the game? No dice, go somewhere else". That's always a slap in the face, but they're few and far between. Hopefully they won't learn to network amongst one another any time soon.

They have it backwards. It is being an asshole, stealing candy, cheating at dice etc. type of behaviour that gets these people rich. They are not nasty because they're rich, they're rich because they can be nasty.

Star Citizen Extended Trailer

I think Disney owns the IP, but for now they're outsourcing development of all Star Wars games to EA.

Another X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is too much to hope for. But DICE could do a great Battlefield style game in the setting. Throw in a few maps that are mostly space battles and that could turn out well.

Sorry, it isn't. I have observed these peoples behaviour and have judged them based on that experience. Not that I didn't say "fuck all muslims". I simply have no time for these specific people who went to an admittedly stupid movie with the express purpose of being offended.

And your analogy is kinda hyperbolic. It's more like a group of burn victims going to see a fire eater and then complaining about it.

artician said:

saying "fuck those people" is the textbook definition of prejudice.

Assuming this is exactly what it says it is, even in the best case scenario, you're basically taking a room-full of burn-victims and setting the place on fire to get a reaction from them.

Guns, Paranoia and The American Family

Jinx says...

No, your right. The destructive uses of a gun can be overlooked when we consider their constructive use as, err, a high powered holepunch? Indeed was it not a happy accident when we discovered that this household tool was also extremely potent as a weapon!

Ok Mr S. Emantics, we give objects purpose through our use of them, but we also design objects for specific purposes. Occasionally it turns out the what we intend something to be used for actually works better as something else. This is not the case with firearms. They are designed to kill, killing is what they are good at. Knives can also kill, but they aren't quite as good as a gun, and i don't see too many people dicing veg on a cutting board with a mac10. So yes, we do accept certain premature deaths more readily than others because we all accept that knives and cars have significant uses beyond killing people. We legislate with this in mind, we don't let people carry long knives in the street, we don't allow people to turn their cars into spiked mad max death buggies, we don't let people pervert the purpose of these tools. So where are the ancillary benefits of firearms. What use is accelerating a projectile that may or may not be designed to penetrate flesh actually give us, because a lot of people have a hard time seeing it.

You know, after 9/11 nobody was talkin about banning planes. There is a reason for that.

harlequinn said:

No, firearms are not designed to "kill". They are designed to accelerate a projectile in a specified direction. Some projectiles are designed to expand when they hit flesh, other projectiles are designed to cut perfect holes in cardboard or paper. As a comparison example a knife is designed to part molecules and a hammer is designed to collide two masses together.

Their designated use is determined by a human's choice. They may be designated for use as a weapon or for putting holes in paper targets.

Just recently a lady decided to mow down someone who threw some chips at her car. You can use just about anything as a weapon even if it is designed for something else.

In regards to guns vs cars - he has a point. Cars do cause significantly more death each year. It's just not purposeful death, therefore it's a risk we take because it is impersonal - an "accident". I don't know the relative risk but I'd say you're more likely to die in a car accident than to be massacred. Should we accept one sort of premature death more readily than another? (I don't know)

Hey, thought you might be interested in this little moment of much-delayed sanity: http://www.theage.com.au/technology/technology-news/backdown-on-internet-filter-plan-20121108-290qr.html

Still not perfect, but a step in the right direction.

How has Gillard taken Australia 'so far backwards'?

I'm pretty sure he's referring to Gillard's comments re: libs attending the Allen Jones speech, castigating them for not getting up and leaving... In which case, the situations are analogous.

Data retention?

Compulsory internet filtering?

Two policies that forever damn Labor in my eyes. Two policies Gillard has not canned or dropped. I keep hoping Malcolm Turnbull get's up as leader of the opposition and wins the next election, but Abbott hasn't committed to pushing the fascist nanny state yet so I'll roll the dice on him...
