How to deactivate a cat

grinter says...

>> ^mxxcon:

This also works on dogs and virtually every other mammal which mother carries babies like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if this also works on domesticated dogs. Both house cats and domestic dogs have been selected for neotenic features; perhaps this response has come along for the ride, ...but I dare you to try it on a hyena!

If this trick allows a cat to be treated by a vet who would otherwise need to be restrained, sedated, or further stressed, then it's awesome. I can just see this becoming a cruel "hey..you gotta check this out...where is the cat" kinda things and that just sucks.

During my two years of employment as a Vet Tech, I never once saw "the scruff" technique used on any highly stressed cats. I think even a moderate level of fear can easily override the induced paralysis.

The pressure between the shoulder blades simulates the bite a mother cat uses to carry her kittens. Adult cats respond to this to some varying degree due to that instinct to become limp while being carried as a baby. It's useful to know if you have to give your cat a bath. Don't try to carry them by that fold of skin though. Their adult weight and the grip force necessary to hold them makes it too painful to bear for prolonged periods.

What I was about to say. Both my cats are very different in personality but both respond to having that area pinched repeatedly. It really chills them out.

Alien Swarm : New, kick ass free game from Valve

Alien Swarm : New, kick ass free game from Valve

Croccydile says...

I only buy games on Steam that are on sale. If I buy something new it is the good old fashioned way. Steam will probably be a better outlet for older games but I do not have good faith in new games on it yet. The prices are rarely compeditive for new games compared to just walking to a store and buying the damn thing and I get a physical copy of the game. I realize the whole point of Steam is to install games anywhere which is nice, but you still have to wait a few hours (or more) when downloading a 5-10GB game!

The sales are indeed nice, but I sometimes dislike the OMG 1 DAY SALE TOO LATE IF YOU MISSED IT LOL!!!1 I missed out on the EA racer package in July since I was on vacation

Now if only they gave the amount of attention they have been giving $20 Team Fortress 2 (ALOT) to stuff like $50 Left 4 Dead... Oh yeah and where is HL2 Ep. 3 This kind of lop-sided support is a bit odd but I cannot complain as they are still better than most game companies

The only real complaint I can see about Steam (and why I don't buy anything new as such a small investment into it) is that if you lose your account or it gets deactivated for whatever reason you lose ALL your games and there is NO recourse thanks to the EULA. Maybe Valve will be nice when Steam eventually falls under and allow you to unlock what you have... but what if someone buys out Valve

Two bombs deactivated during Oklahoma bombing

burdturgler says...

The intent of this video is to foment the idea that someone somewhere (the "government" I guess) is obfuscating the "truth" that there were secondary explosive devices at this tragic event. That's the conspiracy. There were no such devices. That's why it's in lies. When a major event happens, many bits of information come in to news organizations concurrently and initial reports are often wrong. Going back and skimming the original news reports and creating a mash-up of mistakes isn't really proof of anything. The news agencies didn't "lie". But their reports, as it turns out, just weren't true.

A better title would be:
"NO BOMBS WERE EVER DEACTIVATED DURING THE OKLAHOMA BOMBING"

Effect of avatars (Geek Talk Post)

If you were to ask me to name or describe three avatars used by members of this community, I would have to pass. I don't notice them anymore. In fact, I haven't noticed avatars in any forum for at least half a decade. Same for signaturs if they can't be deactivated from the get-go.

Subliminal messages such as in advertisements have been shown to be more effective on people who do not believe they are receiving them. I know I feel completely oblivious to most banner ads but that doesn't mean videoSift's ad selection doesn't color my perception of the site. I think we should expect the emotional content of an icon in close proximity to a posted message to have some effect even when we can't match an avatar to a username.

Banning is punitive, instead - here's a method for deactivating your own account permanently:

1. In the login section of your profile, change your email address to something nonsensical
2. type some nonsense into notepad or anything else that will accept text
3. Paste the gibberish into the password and confirm fields of the login section of your profile
4. Logout

Sorry we don't have an easier one button approach for this. We will put this on the list of potential features to add for 4.0

Cheers

i am not threatening you with destruction, i'll just post a self link or something. i was trying to leave quietly, without "theatrics" like a deliberate self link or a "fuck you" thread... i thought it would be quieter if i ask you to ban me.

the reason i want to be banned is because if i "just leave" then i can still come back, and i don't want to, because that will just piss you off, which i don't want to do. I have "quit" twice already and it didn't work. You're a sucker for trollbait, i'm a sucker for retards. if you ban me then both our lives will improve.

So, seeing as you don't offer an account cancellation and self blocking feature, i am asking you to do it by hand, to do us all a favour. it's win win.

I will not ban you and please don't threaten me with doing harm to the community.

If you're unhappy with the Sift and you feel that you've exhausted all your efforts to engage the community. Just. fucking. leave. No need to break the furniture for a dramatic exit.

In reply to this comment by MINK:
dude just ban me, or i will force you to ban me. let's do this the easy way, eh?

In reply to this comment by dag:
Please don't go on a flameout downvote spree - but if you feel the need - may I suggest taking a breather from the Sift.

In reply to this comment by MINK:
so ban me. or do i have to go on a flameout downvote spree?

In reply to this comment by dag:
MINK-

I read Jonny's post - asked for a clarification in the thread and continued to monitor the discussion when I could.

Sift Talk posts are not "letters to Dag" they're for discussion and consideration by the community.

You're right, personal insults do get a response from me - like many people I'm a sucker for troll bait.

Don't bother apologising again.
