Will Rock Band Drums Teach You Real World Drumming?

bamdrew says...

There are tons of nuances left out (hi-hat, different cymbal and snare strikes, double bass pedal, etc.) but I definitely think Rock Band/Guitarhero World Tour are fun ways to get your feet wet on the drums (without the intense volume).

Zildjian.com: Who was the first drummer who inspired you to take up the instrument? Who were some of your early drum influences?

Answer: The first time I remember feeling a desire to play the drums was while watching the movie The Gene Krupa Story, at the age of eleven or twelve. The film’s dramatization of his life and Sal Mineo’s portrayal managed to make the idea of being a drummer seem exciting, glamorous, elegant, and dangerous. I started beating on the furniture and my baby sister’s playpen with a pair of chopsticks, and for my thirteenth birthday my parents gave me drum lessons, a practice pad, and a pair of sticks. They said they wouldn’t buy me real drums until I showed that I was going to be serious about it for at least a year, and I used to arrange magazines across my bed to make fantasy arrays of drums and cymbals, then beat the covers off them!

And don't forget Buddy Rich:

I just caught Peart and Rush in the R30 concert from Frankfurt, Germany in 2004 and he has a 360° kit with more drums, cymbals bells and xylophones than you could shake your drumsticks at. I'll give props to the 13 year old and even to Tony Royster if we're comparing, but I don't think either could keep up with Niel. That said, he's 50+, has had umpteen years of experience at this point and, eh, I'll guess did not have this level of talent at their age. But you always look up to others don't you? I can't imagine that Niel had that level of drummer to idolize 30 some odd years ago...

Zero Punctuation: Guitar Hero World Tour

Finally a game I can comment about.

I've played the guitar, and I also think the slider bar is useless. And I'm also annoyed that the playlist is weak, except for the three tracks from TOOL. I don't really like the 80s that much.

My main instrument is the drum set, and yes, the cymbal and hi-hat are ridiculously bad. After about five minutes of playing they stop picking up all the hits, which is absolutely detrimental to songs like "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters. Most of that song is the hi-hat, and catching every other note makes you fail hardcore.

But it's still fun while it lasts. I like Rock Band better, unless there's a real drum set somewhere. Then I ignore the video games and rock out for real. \m/

This just proves practice make perfect. I can play alot of songs on real drums without even remembering.Although Im not entirely good at drums, so it takes me along time to learn a new song. My brain just automatically does it. Which sucks when I play on a different kit, or my wife re-arranges stuff when Im not paying attention. I'll be in hardcore drummer mode and reach for a cymbal thats not there.

The key to drumming is counting on time and constant repetition.

Huckabee jokes about someone aiming a gun at Obama

Obama vs McCain, very much like JFK vs Nixon.
Young dynamic charismatic vs tired old crusty.

As for Huckabee, once again the guys who most loudly proclaim themselves to be followers of Jesus always seem to be the most hateful bigots.

Seems the former (how can you become a "former") minister of God forgot 1 Corinthians 13:

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing."

>When I look at how many horrible things have been done in the past in the name of religion, I cannot help but question religion in general.

All people suck to some degree or another. This is one of the truths contained in the Bible. How anyone can kill or hurt or persecute "in the name of God" is beyond me. I have to wonder what crack they are smoking.

I think that if you wanted to destroy something, like the relationship between God and believers, you wouldn't make a frontal assault. You would pull a Trojan horse. You would infiltrate and destroy it from the inside out. I believe the Devil is doing it this way.

>What sort of deity allows these things to be committed in the name of its religion? Do I want to be even remotely associated with such a diety?

Earlier I mentioned that in order to have a true relationship, you have to allow yourself to be hurt. I think that religion is people-created, and people are fallible. I'm 100% positive that God is hurt when people He is trying to love are killed by people He is trying to love.

>If the translation into English is the problem, why not just guide translators to give the meaning you originally intended?

The meaning is there. You have to seek it out. What would be the point of making a rule book? God doesn't want you to follow rules; God wants you to live in a such a way that the rules aren't necessary.

@Farhad2000

You hit the nail on the head. People try to use religion as a way to "puff themselves up" (see the verse at the end). I'm don't like it when I see Christians touting themselves above other people. I mean, what part of "humble yourself" didn't they get. It's right there in the Bible.

What this says to me is this: if I want to know God/Jesus, I can't do it by following the example of other people who are trying to do the same, because inevitably they are fking up. I have to follow the example of Jesus. The only way I can do that is to see what he did, and what he has to say, in the Bible.

@whomever

I see some "I don't believe it because of x y and z." But look at the material. How could you not agree with this:

""
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I give over my body in order to boast, but do not have love, I receive no benefit.

Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up. It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful. It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth.
""

Surely you cannot say that those statements aren't true. And surely you cannot say that Christians who go around being asses are anywhere near listening to what verses like this have to say. The truth of the matter is, that all Christians fail at being Christ-like. Myself, included. If you want to know God, then you have to forgive, and look past that to Jesus.
