TYT : 90% Shrimp raised in China, toxic waste ponds

notarobot says...

This is why we can't have nice things.
Should this be surprising? Isn't this how every other critter we eat gets treated?
I look forward to the sci-fi future when we're eating our recycled waste.

I understand why this is confusing as hell;

http://science.kennesaw.edu/~jdirnber/InvertZoo/LecIntro/TreeTime.jpg

... here is a relatively straight-forward 'evolutionary tree' cartoon,... the biggest thing to note is the Time axis... you have to trace the lines to see where species diverge and then look around to see if that line split happens before other line splits with respect to the Time direction.

Even in this simple diagram, you have to look at it for a minute to realize that reptiles, birds and most of the dinosaurs we think of split off from what became mammals, then reptiles split off from that group, then some dinos split off, then birds... So this is to illustrate that the split between what became mammals is farther back in time than the split separating birds and most dinos, and birds and reptiles. So this illustration really functions like a family tree, showing relationships with time and allow you to pick out that birds are closely related to dinosaurs, and that we have to go pretty far back to see where animals diverged into what became mammals and what became reptile/bird/dinosaurs.

If you're interested you should look for bigger ones trees,... when you start including plants, bacteria, archaebacteria, etc.... stuff gets pretty wild because you're reaching the edge of the science... and the complex smaller trees that just cover one group of critters can be really interesting to see... so much variety.

Oh, last note for transparency; they generally make these 'family trees' by researching comparative anatomy and tons of fossils, but have been using DNA to produce new and correct old 'phylogenetic trees' for 20 or 30 years now.

Same logic: What are we then?

Mammals - which birds aren't and dinosaurs weren't.

Yes ok, but Mammals are as much Reptile as Bird are Dinosaur.

This snapping turtle can climb fences!

OK people.. For starters, if you have never been around a snapping turtle, especially a 25-30 pound snapping turtle, you need to back off with the hate talk as to why I didnt jump right in and "help" him over the fence. This dude had a neck that comes out nearly a foot at lightening fast speed. His head is the size of a baseball.. Dont let the slow moving body fool you. These things can be NASTY as hell when you mess with them. You just dont walk over and pet it, or try to pick it up. The claws on his feet are razor sharp and about an inch long. Those feet are INCREDIBLY strong. My plan was to relocate him to the Mississippi River after work that day so he wouldnt EAT the newly hatched baby ducks and baby geese on the pond in the background. When I came back an hour or so later, he did finally make it over the fence and is now back into the pond. So far, the ducks and geese are fine. All are still accounted for.
He crawled into this fenced in enclosure sometime during the night, I found him the next morning just crawling along the interior of the fence just looking for a way out. I had NO IDEA these critters scaled fences or anything else for that matter. If you notice, the beginning of the video, how far away I am? I wasnt "waiting" for him to climb.. I just saw it in progress and started recording.. I didnt know he was going to fall either, nor did I make him fall. I just thought this was something super crazy so I recorded it for everybody to see. In a matter of 2 weeks, it has been seen nearly 60,000 times on YouTube.
I love animals just as much as anybody else and would never do anything to harm this turtle. So please knock off the "Prick" and the "WTF".. The turtle is very happy where he's at and Im sure will be there a long time..
Thanks,
Todd

welcome to Sift
No need to be defensive about your video. Even though comments might sound harsh, they are not so much comments on you but more for other Sifter's humor.
Right now your video is ranked #17. With a few more votes it'll get bumped to top 15 and then it'll get a lot more exposure. Not many people have the honor/luck of getting up there.

Steven Pinker on Mind/Brain Unity

darkpaw02 says...

"Natural selections doesn't conjure up something from nothing : there has to be a germ of something for it to act upon" - funny that he used the word "germ". Bacteria can move towards food, and that has simple chemical explanations. Critters with more complex means of moving towards food have brains or at least a nervous system.

Is there some point where it makes sense to say that a critter "feels hungry"? Yes, when it has a brain.

The idea of "you cant have X without Y" might be right in a way, but all you have to do to come up with "oooh, spooky! There's an X without Y!!" is to not look too hard and to avoid seeing Y when it's not convenient for "spooky".

Jefferson Memorial Dancing on June 4 2011

d3n4l1 says...

"When you have principles, you fight for them or you lose them. Even if somebody defies your principles in a small, silly, quite understandable way, they are still defying them. You either fight, or give up."

The fight has already been won ... In Court ... For those who want to have only Quiet Reflection in the Jefferson Memorial. Before that, the war was won in a Legislative body, where a law was made by a Legislator, who was elected by a majority of a freely voting public. There was no Revolution needed. What the people want has become law, and the law has been upheld, for decades, because the people don't want it changed.

Nobody there is in the dirt, sweat, or blood making the world a better place. There are only a few well-fed children with nothing better to work on dancing. None of them are risking their lives for anything the majority of people want. Most of them probably don't even know who their congress-critter is.

Nobody said you can't dance. Just leave the guy who wants to THINK ... in peace ... in there ... and you go ... out there.

Jefferson didn't start a dance academy.

I always particularly loved the long, line-thin, arms and legs with round hands and feet, and the way they tend to gallop around a lot.

My kids were a bit small to really appreciate it when it was on tv here, several years ago, but I showed them the video tonight and they liked it much more. Until then I was going to say it's wasted on children. I might have to buy the dvd now.

Cat's Cradle left me puzzled at first (was it in the wft channel???) but as it went on I found it more and more humourous. I don't think I would've watched enough to get into it without your comment, so thanks

Thanks for this awesome link!!
I love that show -- you know what, I worked for that company in Berlin on an Asterix film and I'm sure the little critters in that video were just heading into design as I was leaving. They have such a knack for cute characters. The world needs more of that kind of humour. Love the ants getting ready for work haha...

Cat's Cradle is such a weird film! I never really 'got' it, but I adored the shaggy linework. I'm a huge Driessen fan. There are a couple of newer ones he's done with split screens that show the same story from different perspectives -- or other splits like land, sea, air.. I'd really like to see those again.

It's great to see such amazing animation here.

Have you seen this before? http://videosift.com/video/Ted-Siegel-s-Wildlife

I only posted it because your comment on "Cat's cradle" got me to watch it (loved it btw, the moral would have be be "be kind to spiders"?) and then that reminded me of this.

Ron Paul Calls Out "Fiscal Conservatives" Defunding NPR...

xxovercastxx says...

I'm amazed that Ron Paul still has it in him to get up and make these speeches. Wouldn't you get tired of saying the same thing year after year and having nobody listen?

I always picture the other congress-critters giggling at him under their breath like his opponents in the presidential debates did. Like he's just some crazy kid with a crazy idealistic opinion.

I don't agree with him on everything but RP makes the most overall sense out of any politician I've ever heard and it's really disheartening to see nobody else in government cares.
