I'm guessing that prevalent attitude is pretty strongly aligned with age. When I was in my late teens and early twenties, the cops were my hereditary enemies. As I got more experience under my belt (and grew to know a dozen or so), I found my views of them moderating substantially. In the vast majority of cases, you get back better than you give them.
Treat them with respect, and most are more than happy to do the same.
Treat them like shit (like this idiot did), and usually you'll -still- be treated with courtesy.
Try to prevent them from doing their job and treat them like shit, and be prepared to visit the station.

These cops did an excellent job under difficult circumstances. And I don't buy for a second the "she's only a girl" bullshit.

And I'm with @sheppard. Yes, there are bad cops, but to tar them all with them same brush is just fucking ignorant. I have a friend who is right now in police college. He's taking a massive pay cut from his previous job to be a cop, because he believes in it.

Everything in this video made me admire these cops. They did the best they could with a woman who was cynically trying to exploit her gender to get out of being arrested. Watch the look on her face at 3:12. She's perfectly fine and is even trying to signal someone, but then she goes back to being hysterical.

Meanwhile, the people videoing are insisting on knowing what she was arrested for, which is none of their business, and in fact would be a violation of her privacy for the cops to give out.

All in all, they handled the situation with professionalism and courtesy.

And @Trancecoach, you really want to replace the police with private security? Yeah, 'cos that's worked out so well with prisons and the military (blackwater, etc)....

Actually, to practice road ride, you MUST ride in a group. There is a huge group etiquette and not to mention learning to pass, take over, draft, follow etc can only be learned by actually doing it.

Most road groups like that ride on long stretches away from town. It's not like it's the end of the world to pass them, safely mind you, by waiting a good 30 seconds.

But you're right, roadies are lame. Fat Tire for life!

BTW, should be noted that most cycling experts will attest that most cycle lanes are more dangerous than not having them. Between all the road debris and poor maintenance, it's sometimes the worst place for us to be.

Which means I should also point out, that cycle lanes does not mean we're required by ANY law to use them. They are basically a courtesy for slower solo riders. In Florida they tried passing a requirement law, and it hit a lot of walls due to liability issues. If a cyclist is in the bike lane and there's an obstacle, and they hit it and get hurt, the city/state is completely 100% liable for any injuries or deaths.

Unfortunately, you can only ever control your reaction to people.

Sure, you can moderate em out, ignore em, try to educate them, shame them, plead with them, but I doubt anyone is such a wordsmith that they could change a persons entire way of thinking with the online equivalent of a note on the fridge...

That doesn't mean you stop trying, but acceptance appears to be generational for the most part. When I was growing up, being a 'computer nerd' (ie. messing around with Apple II's) was seen to be a "very bad thing" generally, now everyone has some sort of smart device and/or a PC (yeah, fairly trite example but you get what I'm talking about). As the message of equality and acceptance is taught, it becomes pervasive. Mebbe one day everyone will treat each other with the courtesy and decency they deserve.

Fact is, boxers generally ARE difficult to deal with. They're generally fit, and more importantly they can usually take a hit far better than a lot of other martial artists.

Which is why humility is important. Even in a dojo, you don't necessarily know the life experience of your opponent. They might have just walked in the door and be a complete noob in your art, but they may have also trained for years in another discipline. Courtesy and respect go a long way.
