HIV, Circumcision & The Fight Against AIDS SciShow

ChaosEngine says...

As someone who is against circumcision by default, let me just say:

If you chop off your sons foreskin for cosmetic, cultural or religious reasons, that's child abuse.

And if you do it with a freaky old man removing the skin with his mouth, well, that's just fucking weird....

but

if an adult male makes an informed decision to get circumcized, I have no problem with that.

if you can show a genuine harm reduction (i.e. lower chance of HIV) for infants, I can also get behind that. This is the point of science. When there is new evidence, you change your mind.

Crazy Dentist Visit - Cyanide & Happiness

poolcleaner says...

Dental implants aren't covered by insurance, because they're cosmetic. In fact, most (all?) executive dental plans provided by major corporations don't even cover them.

I paid 2k for a dental implant after talking my dentist down from 5k. Why did I pay this hefty price instead of getting a bridge, which is covered by my usually very decent insurance? I did it to save my surrounding teeth, which would have been widdled down to nubs in order to support the bridge (that's why it's called a bridge).

Bridges should be an outdated procedure, replaced by the superior implant, because we have the technology to avoid it.

But, well, we highly value the SUCCESS of dentists and insurance company scam artists, who desperately need new Ferraris. Afterall, they paid successful education scam artists to become dentists and insurance zombies, so they need to pay off them loans -- with your money, of course.

Oh it's a vicious first world cycle. lol

From Wikipedia:
Adalimumab (HUMIRA, AbbVie) is the third TNF inhibitor, after infliximab and etanercept, to be approved in the United States. Like infliximab and etanercept, adalimumab binds to Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα), preventing it from activating TNF receptors. Adalimumab was constructed from a fully human monoclonal antibody, while infliximab is a mouse-human chimeric antibody and etanercept is a TNF receptor-IgG fusion protein. TNFα inactivation has proven to be important in downregulating the inflammatory reactions associated with autoimmune diseases. As of 2008 adalimumab has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, moderate to severe chronic psoriasis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Although only approved for ulcerative colitis from late 2012 by the FDA in the disease's management, it has been used for several years in cases that have not responded to conventional treatment at standard dosing for Crohn's Disease.

But yes, seeing a powerfull and potetially extremly harmful drug advertised for what seems to be (I am no medical expert) a "cosmetic disorder"is frightening.

Incompetent ATF Agent Confiscates 30 Airsoft Guns

aimpoint says...

Honor system mostly especially in wider open area environments. Smaller fields and indoor fields may have a match coordinator also serve as an "acting" ref.

From experience, the orange tip is a massive grey zone, with enforcement very arbitrary. That's probably why the owner was able to get by before, but suddenly not able to now. I used to keep an orange ribbon around so that any time law enforcement of any type showed up, I would wrap around the end of my barrels so it would "technically" comply, just in case.

As for the internals, to give an idea of how different they are, theres usually two "barrels" to the gun, the outer cosmetic barrel and the inner proper barrel. To say that airsoft weapons can be easily chambered to fire real bullets is like saying you can get them to fire out of a metal pipe. The upper and lower receiver internals are, for electric, a mechanical gearbox that has more in common with an RC car than a firearm. Gas is even more "different" as all its doing is pressing a button on the magazine to release the gas and launch the BB.

All of this doesn't even touch upon the fact that ATF defines the firearm portion of a real weapon to be the lower receiver and not the upper receiver. Thats where generally the firearm bits that do most of the real work are. So to say that an airsoft gun could be converted from the shell of an airsoft rifle would conflict with that lower receiver policy.

By the way, in the airsoft community, "any kid, any parent, any adult going out of the house with this..." would usually get you kicked off the establishment for doing something that stupid. Gunbags, fucking gunbags.

I've done paintball before, just wondering how airsoft is different. Do you just use the honor system as far as being hit?

If you ever find yourself designing androids, especially for combat or constable duty, make sure the head is cosmetic only and contains no critical components.

When the enemies/rebels go to battle against them, they'll waste all their ammo and effort destroying what is essentially a hood ornament, leaving your now headless platoon fully functional against exhausted, defenseless meatbags.

Jim Carrey takes on Gun Control, as only he can

chingalera says...

It's hard to watch this slow train wreck as a passenger, innit?

If you aren't one of the folks decoding the semantics of the recent inane dialog of capacities, background checks, and "assault" cosmetics or the sputum gurgling from the craws of the likes of Feinsteins and Bloombergs, oh well.

Am I one of the only people who thinks Carrey's schtick looks increasingly awkward as he ages?

Adam Smith schools Fox News - my new favorite Dem!

quantumushroom says...

Rubio and Paul also voted against it. Franken voted for it.

It's unclear what the left is whining about now. We the people just got slammed with one trillion dollars in new obamacare taxes (just the beginning!) Payroll taxes are going up for 77% of Americans, and if you enjoy sharing intimate medical info with the IRS, you're in luck, this and every year from now on.

The spending cuts are pissant and cosmetic, and would have been whether Obama got what he wanted or not. Count on the libmedia to blame Rs and their lack of "Obama-approved spending cuts" on the coming Depression.

Save MASSIVE amounts of money on your dental care.

Sagemind says...

Yes, I heard about this when Marketplace released it.

But let's be honest. No one goes to Dentists they've never been to before out of the blue for random surgery. What they suggest is purely a suggestion. Like any other business, the up-sell for cosmetic reasoning will always be available and just because they offer it, doesn't mean you have to do it.

The prices they quote are also the price before or without dental coverage. (I do understand not all coverage is the same)

There is also going to be overzealous Dentists, usually new dentists who just want to do all those big procedures because they enjoy the bigger jobs.
No one should be rushing into these procedures. You should stay with one dentist over time and build a relationship with them. I've never had a issue with any of my dentists. I've heard of people being offered specific services but they are all elective - and few move forward with them unless necessary.

I avoid any dental work for my family or myself if it's purely for cosmetic reasons (especially whitening- teeth aren't supposed to be white). You don't want to do it? Don't do it. But they are going to let you know your options. I think this is different than being told, "You must do it, if you don't, all your teeth are going to fall out and you will be in pain for the rest of your life."

-just doesn't happen.

Becoming rich takes 5-25 years, depending on luck and starting position.

The people in this video are on the far right tail of the attractiveness bell curve, and for us to get there for most of the population... that will have to wait a few or several decades for reprogenetics & advanced cosmetic procedures (stem cell tech etc.).

In the meantime, most people can substantially improve their attractiveness through normal means (exercise, build a good personality, devote all of our life and intelligence to our careers, and so on).

Mitt's Magical Mormon Undies: Penn Jillette's Rant Redux

Locque says...

Mormonism seems cosmetically more ridiculous because it's new: we know miracles and magic didn't happen within the last couple of centuries; it only happens an inteterminate period of time so long ago that any real verification is impossible. Obviously. God prefers obfuscation, so he never shows up anymore for fear of some miracle or magic being captured on someone's cellphone and giving people a better reason to believe than "some guy said so."

Bill Moyers: Living Under the Gun

jimnms says...

Wow, I have just lost respect for Bill Moyers. He has stooped to flat out lying and playing a fear mongering video that is full of BS. Right at 1 minute he says "one of the guns used was an AK-47 type assault weapon that was banned in 1994." This is a flat out lie. The so called "assault weapon ban" did not actually ban any weapons, it only banned cosmetic features on semi automatic replicas, or more accurately it limited a gun to having no more than two military style features found on the real assault weapon. His "AK-47 type assault weapon" would have still been legal, it just might have looked less scary.

The 1994 Assault Weapon Ban was political stunt that banned something that people feared, but didn't do squat to prevent crime. The DOJ conducted a study on the effect of the 1994 Assault Weapon ban and found that its effects on gun violence was "too small for reliable measurement, because assault weapons are rarely used in gun crimes." The Brady Center did a study of the ban and their findings were that "assault weapons" were only used in 1.6% of gun crimes.

I can't believe he played that clip of a scary muslim instructing on how easy it is to go to a gun show and walk out with a fully automatic weapon without a background check or showing any ID, without checking the facts claimed. That is total fear mongering BS. First of all you can't buy a gun at all, even at a gun show without a background check. Second, to legally own a fully automatic weapon requires a class 3 firearms license, which isn't easy to get or cheap, and you must register your weapons with the ATF. Way to go on fact checking that video Bill.

How come you never hear about the crimes that are prevented by people lawfully carrying a gun? A NIJ and another independent study from 1993 and 1994 found that 800,000 to 2.5 million crimes per year are prevented each year most of which the victim never had to fire a shot.
