There isn't anything wrong with saying "I don't know". Yet, what I've observed is that there is an obsession with the search. What is the point of the search if not to find the answer? Is it wrong to think there may be an answer?

Christians claim that there is a God who has given us answers, yet this doesn't impede scientific research. Johann Kepler said as he made discoveries that he felt like he was thinking Gods thoughts after him. There is no actual incompatibility with a belief in God and true science. That I claim an answer as to where the Universe came from doesn't prevent anyone from finding out how it works. And finding out how it works doesn't preclude God from having created it. To say it did would be outside the realm of empirical research and be resting on faith.

This is what Robert Jastrow had to say about that dichotomy:

"For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountain of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

rebuilder said:

How about "we don't know yet"? We're ignorant on many things, and many of the ideas we have about the universe will probably turn out to be false in light of further research. Maybe some of the questions we're asking will turn out to be pointless. That doesn't mean faith-based explanations are correct. It just means we don't know yet.

Science is about making educated guesses, rejecting theories once proven false, coming up with new ones fitting empirical data and above all, having a reasonable process for deciding what explanations for phenomena seem most likely at any given time. Where is that ability for self-correction in religion? How would you decide which religion is most likely to be correct - if any are?

There is a hand book and it's a mormon too. I mean, it's the thing they read. Not the bible. That other book. The one that describes post-scarcity domination of human women and planet conquering supermen.

The Falklands' Most Daring Raid (Great Documentary)

gorillaman says...

So you support the Argentine attempt to annex the Falklands by force and against the wishes of its entire population?

Generally I take the side of peaceful people against those who try to conquer them.

Oh yeah you must be right, England has always interfered all over the world, stopping bad people doing horrible things out of the goodness of their heart.

There's a lot more to it, you can look it up if you're curious. But I would suggest that you never take the side of the fallen Empire who's intervening Thousands of miles away from it's homeland. Most likely, they're wrong.

In Soviet US, observing protestors is illegal!

criticalthud says...

while i think the "evil" lurks in the concept of political parties (divide and conquer), you are much more likely to see a republican cheering on a police beating, a lynching, MMA, Nascar, or an invasion by the US Military.

Frausty said:

Seriously? Are republicans some sort of evil demon now? Pretty sure most people on both ends of the political spectrum find police brutality abhorrent - and that this police stoically doing their job resembles in no way brutality.

Your mom's a colonialist.

First she colonized your dad and then she made you and sent you into the world to conquer. You just don't realize that's what all humans do at one level or another.

You're on the internet so STFU. I'll believe your disgust when the only way you can contact me is via smoke signal.

Young national anthem singer responds to the Twitter racists

I'm shocked by this, although I know I shouldn't be. Do these people understand that we Conquered half of Mexico? If you take over part of a country don't be surprised if some of those people stay.

Also don't be surprised when you enact legislation that trashes their economy that they will come to the alternative place where they do have roots and live a life! You especially can't be surprised when this response was predicted and the border was militarized in anticipation of it.

I'm starting to think we're about to have something similar to a serious crime against humanity, and it will be these people lead by a fucking Believer who says we should destroy Mexicans.

Maher exposes Republicans Secret Rules

A Brief History of the United States.

Yogi says...

Well he's wrong then. The south was also exploited by the north, just like we today exploit places that are poor. We get rich off of poor places just like the North getting rich on the South and it's slavery. France is rich mostly because it exploited Haiti, and left it in shambles, till we came along and destroyed it even more. Chomsky has reported a lot on this, I suggest you read him since he's an honest intellectual who has his sources all correct.

It's just a fact that the US made a ton of it's wealth from slavery, doesn't matter what booms or busts happened. Make any argument you want, but the US became wealthy by first conquering land and killing all in their path in a designed genocide. Then taking Africans and bringing them here to work the land they stole as beasts of burden. You can also make a compelling argument that the Nazis were under a threat from terrorists, doesn't make it ok that they attacked Poland.

oritteropo said:

That's not what Alexis de Tocqueville wrote after in 1824 after his tour. The northern states (no slavery) were hives of industry and rich. The southern states (with slavery) were generally poorer.

He attributed the wealth of the northern states partly to their better shipping ports, and the frantic industry of the people there. In comparison the southerners had little taste for work, preferring to leave that to slaves.

The book is fairly long, but it's a good read.

Also, might I point out that the end of world war 2 was 82 years and several boom and bust cycles after the end of slavery in the U.S. and that you could make a fairly compelling argument that post war prosperity came from elsewhere.

Israel attack on Syria again.

bcglorf says...

By in large, Japan was. It was the aggressor, but not exactly without justifiable self defense as a cause.

The American military build up was absolutely intended to at the very least be prepared to attack Japan. The hardware destroyed in Pearl Harbor was very likely to be used against Japan.

Now, the Japanese policy of conquest throughout Asia and it's genocidal treatment of those areas it conquered is another matter. It is those horrific acts which, to me, shift Japan from aggressor to 'bad guy' if we must use such cheap descriptions.

Yogi said:

By this logic Japan was justified in the bombing of Pearl Harbor, since the planes there were touted as able to burn Japanese cities to the ground.

You're right I did judge you a bit harshly I apologize, but I don't agree Israel is right here.

I Am Not A Bum

poolcleaner says...

I'm not advocating Egyptian style slavery and I don't bring this up because he's black (you spiteful ignorant fuck -- yes YOU), but don't we have awesome shit to build? Awesome shit that ANY man or woman can contribute to in order to live in decency?!?!

People = biological machines
People working = human productivity
People not working = lack of human productivity

Think about the ACTUAL, very simple to behold, long term number game the next time you justify your worship of an economic system that leaves this potential human machine purposeless.

PURPOSELESS.

I'm not a bleeding heart, just a fanatic of the causation of the universe. From a strategic perspective of human progression, leaving free units to roam around your base of operations without a task is dumb, and any justification you have for the system in place is invalidated by this inherent flaw. Poor people do not necessarily equate to lazy people. And laziness is a reversible symptom, if approached properly. So you're dumb to say work ethic makes you succeed and that those without work ethic inevitably fail, but that's alright because that's how it works. DUMB. You are literally dumb for thinking that. Dumb being the inability to speak, you thusly cannot speak of that logic and only parrot the natural (oft unreasonable) logic of your mind's cognitive basis. If you think you aren't dumb for thinking this, tell me the positive long term plan for this demographic.

People who are smart and have high work ethic succeed. Those who succeed make money. Those who make money make law. Those who make law judge by their view of law. (Gets a little messy here.) Their view of law judges those who do not see their perspective, and yet many of those being judged remain moral beings in a rotating system of judgement based in appropriating offender's money. Their constant state of low income makes them less likely to expend the energy (based in scientifically proven limited willpower) to meet the challenges presented by law makers. A challenge which becomes impossible if you have no job and no home. Insert the problem of mental illness that modern man has yet to conquer and you realize how ignorant we really are as a species. How advanced and yet how wasteful.

WASTEFUL. Purposeless and wasteful. PURPOSE IS MAKE MONEY LIVE COMFORT. FUCK YOU DUDE.

Sure, you can say things like "So-and-so was at rock bottom and he formed a tale of fighting all odds, etc. etc." Good for him. That's a statistical probability. VERY SMALL percentages of people will succeed despite all odds, but it still remains statistically improbable that any "market value" can be generated from this demographic.

How to Justify Science (Richard Dawkins)

shinyblurry says...

You're right, Messenger..in a pragmatic sense it is a good assumption to make. However, the conclusion that the scientific method is justified doesn't follow from that assumption, and that is the point of this video.

When you say "we don't know, but maybe we will someday" it reminds me of this quote:

"For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountain of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

SB, there are things we don't know. Yet. And that is all. The fact we don't know why nature is uniform doesn't prevent us from assuming it will continue to be uniform based on our experience. And so far, that has worked out well.

Norsuelefantti my friend, you are indeed worth and welcome. It is I that is unworthy.

Thank you for the gesture of the votes. I have noticed an edge to you that I did not perceive before. I like it.

You inspire me to proceed with the fight...after I conquer the flu that is.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Bill Nye: Creationism Is Just Wrong!

shinyblurry says...

Newton made his discoveries to bring glory to God, and he changed the world many times over. There is no reason not to pursue the mystery of the cosmos; and no one is saying we know everything. It is not arrogance however to say what the origin of the cosmos is, and how the laws governing it came to be. After all, scientists pronounce these things on a continual basis. What is arrogant is to believe that this is solely the domain of science.
