a message to all neocons who booed ron paul

ghark says...

That list of American crimes in the video is just the beginning, America's assassination of the democratically elected Prime Minister of Congo in 1960 and subsequent installation of a dictator (Mobutu) has led to countless millions of deaths. Just in the decade between 1998-2008 there were 5.4 million deaths from Malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia and malnutrition.

"Most of the deaths are due to easily treatable and preventable diseases through the collapse of health systems and the disruption of livelihoods,"

from http://www.reuters.com/article/2008/01/22/us-congo-democratic-death-idUSL2280201220080122

These figures also don't shed light on the fact that the Congo is the rape capital of the world, and the absolute greed of Mobutu (when he was alive) - "Besides what Mobutu siphoned off and stole, he paid himself generously. His personal salary was 17% of the state budget. By 1989, he officially received $100 million a year to spend as he wished, more than the government spent on education, health and social services combined."

Girl transforms herself into (Anonymous) (Guy Fawkes)

Tymbrwulf says...

>> ^FlowersInHisHair:

Does Anonymous not realise that Guy Fawkes's goal was to install a Catholic theocracy? Kind of at odds with what they want, right?

It's not about what he was or what he tried to do, it's about the idea he represents has turned into. He's turned into an icon of anonimity and unity under that pretense.

Che Guevara, who is now considered an anti-imperialistic figure, was at one point attempting to lead a Cuban-led revolution in the African Congo.

How about when American children used to perform the Bellamy Salute during the Pledge of Allegiance?

Even the swastika had many different benevolent meanings before it was used as a symbol for an oppressive regime.

Symbols change over time and are used by people to unite under an idea, whether it be a positive or negative one. I believe the current use of the Guy Fawkes mask and what it stands for is positive.

Amy Lockwood: Selling Condoms in the Congo

>> ^Phreezdryd:

Why not just put a picture of the pope glaring at you on the package. And is this one of those places where some believe sex with a virgin will cure aids, leading to a high incidence of rape?

A majority of the rapes are by the militias in the jungles who do believe rape gives them magical protection, though they are more interested in protection from bullets than aids. Still, they recruit their child soldiers by addicting them to drugs and training them that the only way to survive any length of time is to strengthen themselves with the magical protections afforded from raping people.

If you'll remember the Rwandan genocide, there is a dirty little forgotten piece of it. Virtually 100% of the people that participated in that slaughter safely retreated in the jungles of the Congo where they still live and recruit to this day. They contribute in no small part to the human tragedy that is the Congo today.

Amy Lockwood: Selling Condoms in the Congo

bcglorf says...

The reason condoms aren't helping in the Congo is because rapists don't use them.

There are an estimated 400,000 cases of rape in the Congo every year. Or in a measure you can make more sense of, 4 rapes were committed there in the 5 minutes it'll have taken you to read this.

CEO REALLY Stands Behind His Product

AK 47 is a relatively weak rifle to test it with. Compared to a 7.62 NATO which is far more common in the United States it has a maximum 1260 ft-lbf of energy at the muzzle to the NATO 7.62's 2500-3000. And 7.62 NATO is not a heavy load either. A .50 cal BMG (as someone suggested) has 11,000 - 13,000, ten times the 7.62 Russian's energy.

what? i have no idea where you would be using this glass, but i can guarantee you that an AK47 is likely the most powerful HANDHELD firearm you're going to be facing next to an RPG launcher or something. everyone from detroit gangbangers to iraqi insurgents to rebels in the congo have AK47s. the next step up for most of those guys is likely a .50 cal mounted machine gun, and at that point you're boned regardless of your GLASS, because that shit can go through relatively thick STEEL.

What is statism?

peggedbea says...

libertarianism is anarchism for rich people.
is the state an oppressive force? damn right it is
is capitalism an even more oppressive and exploitative force? yep

abolish the state and let the principles of capitalism reign free, and the US will look like the voluntaryist utopia that is the congo. or somalia.

we need to imagine a better economic system.
we need more realistic options for egalitarian tribal communities.

also, this is hyperbolic. his cadence and use of visual devices is patronizing bullshittery.

Ron Paul, Now And Then (Politics Talk Post)

BicycleRepairMan says...

Ron Paul has always been exactly this crazy, he has a 100% consistent voting record saying he doesnt really want the government involved in anything. Thats fair enough, its his opinion. The problem now is that the entire vocal faction of the GOP has turned into the tea party, which is basically an uninformed, rabid, hypocritical, unintelligent version of Ron Pauls vision.

The problem with libertarianism like the one Ron Paul advocates is that it sounds good in a slogan, and in theory "I don't want no gov'ment up in my business!", but really, its a crazy idea. If you want a society without any goverment "interference" in your life, pack your shit an move to The Democratic Republic of Congo, thats a 100% libertarian right there. You can do whatever the fuck you want, everything is private market, including the justice system, the army, hospitals, schools and people themselves. All you need is to pay for it. Its Ron Pauls utopia. No stinking officials anywhere messing up your shit. No paperwork or anything, just free market all the way. In many ways, its exactly like the wonderful world of the Founding Fathers. You know, before they created the government and all that..

Government sucks. Hell, Democracy, in many ways, sucks. But its the only thing we've got, so we need to work with it.

Auschwitz: The Nazis and the 'Final Solution' (BBC)

Coming from "sumone" too "ignorent" to even know how to spell "genoside" I'll take that pithy remark as the highest compliment.

>> ^westy:

nobody noticed because noone cares to listen to sumone as ignorent as yourself.
>> ^bcglorf:
People have probably noticed I have little patience for the pathetic ignorance that leads people to cry how genocide is happening today, and point at the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as examples.
You are absolutely right that genocide has continued to happen since the holocaust, and few have cared. You're even right to ascribe guilt to America for some of them. But you need to be pointing at Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge. You need to be pointing at the era where America backed, or failed to remove Saddam as he perpetuated multiple genocides of his own.
But more importantly still, if you actually care about genocide being perpetuated then spend some more time talking about the worst ones that are still happening today. Rwanda just recently managed to kill more people more quickly than the nazi death camps, and they did it without setting up camps or factories, they just picked up enough machetes to get the 'job' done. The crew that did it never was caught or stopped either, they were chased out of Rwanda into the Congo, were they are still raping and killing the days away.
Somalia's president is a convicted war criminal by the ICC, and the whole of the Africa Union is willing to protect him, because there are that many leaders of African nations that are all worried that if the Darfur genocide could get him in trouble, they might be too.
The list of genocides going on today, right now, are endless. If the best example you can come up with is the American import of inexpensive chinese labor, I suspect your priorities are NOT on ending genocide and lie in much different place. Don't sully the fight against genocide with your own prejudices.
