How Moana Should Have Ended

Comey Testifies Under Oath That Trump Lied Repeatedly

Diogenes says...

Fascinating. I can't help but feel a bit sad for the man. But there are some aspects of his testimony that leave me scratching my head:

"[T]he administration then chose to defame me and more importantly the FBI by saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader. Those were lies, plain and simple."

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/06/08/full-text-james-comey-trump-russia-testimony-239295

"Yet there is a growing consensus that Comey has wielded the powers of the directorship more aggressively than anyone since Hoover—to the consternation, and even anger, of some of his colleagues."

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/09/james-comey-fbi-accountability-214234

"Mr. Comey got so many calls from former agents and others after he decided this summer not to pursue charges that he had to change his phone number posted online. And at a recent meeting with retired agents, he was still fielding tough questions about the decision."

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/29/us/politics/fbi-clinton-emails-james-comey.html

I think it's fair to say that Comey helped to create a "turbulent" atmosphere at the FBI during the past year, one probably not matched since the firing of William Sessions in 1993.

I wish someone had thought to ask him what he'd imagine the results of the "hopes, loyalty and leaks" would have been if he hadn't been fired.

Climate Change: What Do Scientists Say?

newtboy says...

What do real scientists say?
...the one's he worked with all said Lindzen is totally wrong, and his views are not held by the vast, VAST majority of other scientists that actually work in climatology. He's a political shill now, working for 'conservative think tanks' to deny climate change.

https://insideclimatenews.org/news/06032017/climate-change-denial-scientists-richard-lindzen-mit-donald-trump

Note, his graph at the beginning that appears to show no significant rise because as usual they start in late 97-98, a super hot El Nino year (the hottest on record) typically used as a starting point to pretend that temperatures aren't rising as fast as they are. Start at any other time to see how different the results are. This graph contains the hottest 15 years in recorded history over a period of the last 19 years. That's pretty telling by itself.

1)the climate is always changing-but according to natural cycles, we should be in a cooling period, not a warming period.
2)so at least in his mind, everyone agrees CO2 is a greenhouse gas that causes warming...that's better than most deniers.
3)"little ice age"-During the period 1645–1715, in the middle of the Little Ice Age, there was a period of low solar activity known as the Maunder Minimum. The Spörer Minimum has also been identified with a significant cooling period between 1460 and 1550 (it was not caused by low CO2 levels), and CO2 is produced more in warmer temperatures than cold, so starting shortly after then you can claim the CO2 levels have been rising since well before the industrial revolution...which cherry picked like that may be technically true but is again misleading by starting at an unusually low level following a low level solar period, but the level of that rise has consistently risen since the industrial revolution, and is incredibly higher than any natural mass releases besides rare massive super volcano eruptions that caused mass extinction events.
4) just plain not true, and not agreed on by scientists.
5)What they actually said-
Improve methods to quantify uncertainties of climate projections and scenarios, including development and exploration of long-term ensemble simulations using complex models. The climate system is a coupled non-linear chaotic system, and therefore the long-term prediction of future climate states is not possible. Rather the focus must be upon the prediction of the probability distribution of the systems future possible states by the generation of ensembles of model solutions. Addressing adequately the statistical nature of climate is computationally intensive and requires the application of new methods of model diagnosis, but such statistical information is essential.

Confident prediction of future weather is not possible, weather predictions are based on statistical probabilities too. Because they aren't perfect doesn't mean they're wrong, useless, or should be ignored until they're 100% right every time. More funding for more study will improve the predictions consistently, but we are intentionally defunding them instead.

Religion channel? As in the religion of climate change denial? That's not what that channel is.
Philosophy channel? What?
Learn channel, only if the viewer looks into his BS elsewhere to learn the truth.
Lies, yep...controversy, yep....politics, yep....conspiracy,OK. His ilk are steeped in those, but you left out money, the driving force for all the deniers controversial, political lies and crazy conspiracy theories. ;-)

Better Call Saul: The Origins of Squat Cobbler

BicycleRepairMan says...

Interesting, theres a pretty long story about this on an episode of Penns Sunday School, Penn seems pretty confident that he is the source of this idea. Basically the story goes like this: Penn and some other guy was having people in for an audition, and the other guy told Penn that maybe the scene would would better if the actress could "sit on up high" which penn misheard as "sit on a pie", Penn, not having slept for several weeks, thought this was so funny that in good Penn-style, he decided to hire nude models and order a bunch of pies and essential made pie-sitting-porn which he then sendt out to a bunch of show-business people on his mailing list, creating mass confusion, as he was the only one that was actually in on the joke.

Stephen Fry Explains Why Some Believe Everything Trump Says

SaNdMaN says...

Actually, the video is about manipulation.

But yes, he's kind of dumb. And I'm not saying that because I disagree with his politics (hell, I don't even know what he truly believes). There are plenty of conservatives that I think are brilliant. It's just very obvious from hearing him talk that Trump is dumb. The vocabulary of a middle-school kid, the lack of knowledge about history an adult should posses (let alone the President), lack of intellectual curiosity, lack of self-awareness, etc.

He's extremely confident and arrogant, and this has helped him succeed. I know people like that from my childhood. You think they're so stupid they wouldn't even graduate high school, but they somehow end up successful.

They bet big because they don't question themselves, so they go all in, and sometimes they win. Meanwhile, a lot of extremely smart people constantly doubt themselves, are too self conscious, etc. to make any bold moves.

But of course when you bet big, you lose sometimes too. And we've seen Trump lose a BILLION dollars in a boom economy in the fucking CASINO business.

bobknight33 said:

So Trump is dumb? That is what this video implies.

He turned a million into Billions. Doesn't sound dumb to me.

Trump may not be the smoothest political cat but he has yet to do anything illegal or yet to be any proof.
Meanwhile the media is blowing a gasket day in and day out, pushing lie after lie. Trump just keeps moving forward punking the media.

True dumb people don't know that they are dumb and are more happy. Smart people realize that they don't know as much as they would like and are burden by this.

Al Franken SLAMS Trump For Firing Comey

entr0py says...

I think the point of the investigations is to discover if there was collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Every US intelligence agency agreeing with high confidence that the Russian state ran a propaganda and hacking campaign to get Trump elected is enough to people who have any trust in those agencies.

I mean, I don't have a lot of trust in them, but it seems unlikely that they would all agree, especially when the political party in power just wants them to shut up about it.

ChaosEngine said:

"we do know that the Russians interfered"

Do we, though? I mean, I hate Trump as much as the next guy, and I certainly wouldn't be even vaguely surprised that Putin would do something like that, but it's a bit of a stretch to say we KNOW they interfered.

I thought that was the whole point of this investigation?

Also, I thought we grew out of the "bob SLAMS dave" titles 5 years ago.

Bill Maher - Elizabeth Warren Interview

newtboy says...

It seems that way, but that's only true for idiots that, as he said, would have voted for him if he blatantly murdered random strangers in the street. Under no circumstances would those people vote for Warren, even though they totally agree with her positions.

Normal, reasonable people, the kind that would vote for Warren, still consider many things as disquaifiers, including many things Trump has done in his first 100 days. We would have voted to impeach over the investigations of Trump and his campaign, and a vote of no confidence, halting any of his plans until the investigations are concluded, because he might be a foreign agent.

I think he won because the DNC chose a candidate that was 100% unacceptable to Republicans, or right learners, or centrists, or real progressives (and she personally blew it with pandering bullshit obfuscation like "I support $15 an hour,..................... but I don't support a $15 an hour minimum wage"), and totally screwed over and dismissed independents in the process, ensuring they wouldn't get the votes she needed.

L0cky said:

That's the great thing about Trump; he's set the trend that skeletons don't matter. I think if Warren runs, she'll bag it easily.

The problem with the Democrat run last time was dismissing Trump's support and why it existed. Warren sounds like she could use that to her advantage next time around.

Personally I think she could be the best potus in a long, long time.

Glass bottom pool with a view!

noims says...

Only if their entire weight is suspended by the water. If they're walking in the bottom (like here) it will add weight.

Having said that, I'd be pretty confident that it could take the negligible extra, even if it went above the max recommended occupancy.

Having said that, maybe for 30 seconds just to freak myself out, then nope nope nope nope nope.

newtboy said:

Displacement means that no matter how many people are swimming, it weighs the same....assuming it's normally kept full of water.
Besides, who wants to die alone? I say take that party with you.

Trigger Happy Cop Attacks Private Investigator

cosmovitelli says...

Thing is people are simple, and they go by what seems normal based on their norms. A serious dude who acts unusual and confident is terrifying for a noob cop who knows he can get shot by a serious gangster facing a multi life term in a nighmare profit prison if he blinks. The whole situation in the US seems to now be terrified men pointing guns at each other with shaking hands. When I visit I'm just glad to get out alive.

First 5 minutes of Ghost in the Shell Movie.

RedSky says...

jmd's theory sounds plausible.

I've also heard the interpretation that since she is a full body prosthesis, it is meant to illustrate the detachment she has to her sexuality which sounds plausible although I hate to read too much into literature.

Might just be titillation, Japan is certain not shy about injecting sex into its anime. According to here, the manga series creator had a history of sexualised manga prior to GitS:

https://www.reddit.com/r/bestof/comments/1fl864/tactile_cacti_in_ranime_explains_why_nudity_in/?sort=confidence

ChaosEngine said:

A brief bit of google fu shows that in the anime she's naked? Is there a point to that other than cheap titillation?

I can see where it could add to a feeling of vulnerability, I guess, but it feels like the movie makers are trying to have their cake and eat it.

Anyway, I've never seen the original anime (not a big anime fan), but I thought the suit looked ridiculous in the trailer.

Everything else looked pretty cool, especially the weird spider geisha thing.

Finally, Sean Spicer's Credibility Being Questioned Openly

00Scud00 says...

I feel a bit sorry for the poor bastard in a way, I mean look what he has to work with. A President who's a pathological liar and is so disconnected from reality that if he started hallucinating it might be an improvement. A sane person would have simply resigned from his position.
I think it would be awesome if someday the Press all decided to stop showing up to these things, the ultimate vote of no confidence, every thing you say is so devoid of meaning that we no longer need to hear it.

Bill Maher - President Crazypants

Jinx says...

I don't even think his hands are small...when but when people say it all I can think about is a toddler-esque Trump (Trumppler? Toddump?) throwing a tantrum and punching tweets in on his phone with stubby little fingers. It's that unfortunate combination of low self-confidence and self-esteem totally eclipsed by an enormous ego.

Did Maher ever clap so much before?

MilkmanDan said:

I've said I don't like the "tiny hands" stuff before because it isn't in any way a legitimate or meaningful criticism. Trump does all kinds of legitimately crazy shit, and so much energy is spent on making fun of his hands?

...That being said, Maher brilliantly segued a sarcastic "tiny hands" jab into a very legitimate (and funny) jab in this one.

In the good ol' days

Khufu says...

The way I saw it was more like the rise of trump has given a certain extreme pocket of Americans the feeling that they are justified in their supremacist beliefs and behavior, much like the ignorance of race wars of the 50's. I agree that not all Trump supporters would condone this, but never the less, those who already believed it, felt confident to express those beliefs while being encouraged by Trump himself.

The reason the video works for me is that Trump is always referring to the 'good 'ol days'. But he ignores the fact that they weren't the 'good 'ol days' for everyone...

I'm sure there are plenty of republicans who would agree with me.

bobknight33 said:

The video was implying political alliance of trump were equal to those democrats of the good old days. Nothing can be farther than the truth.
