Video Of The Moment Gaddafi Was Caught

CaptainObvious says...

The only people who have the right to shed a tear and forgive this poor excuse of a human being are those who suffered by him. Suffer being such a sterile word in this context. If they choose instead to put a bullet in his head - I am not going to judge them for it.

It certainly wasn't my child who's head got blown off by one of his snipers. It wasn't my father taken away in the middle of the night.

I didn't feel bad for him at all. The barbaric ugliness and violence of the situation, however, disturbed me greatly. It was terrible. Just a few min prior I was sitting on my comfy sofa enjoying a movie in my nice safe home.

After this post I am going to play a video game.

My wife is sleeping in the bedroom next to me.

The kids are fine too. Maybe I'll take them to the park tomorrow.

Bystanders Lift Burning Car - Save Trapped Motorcyclist

I'll lift up a car... but I ain't touching anything more than your floppy shattered leg to drag you out.
Move you far enough from the car to be actually safe? What am i a f--king taxi?
But i'll be damned if i sit by you, see if you're breathing, perform cpr or provide any comfort until help arrives.
Good on them I suppose... but that's the least compassionate non-commital rescue i've ever seen.

I have a different take on this. If you were watching people in a normal environment doing something non-stressful then I'd agree with you. But we're not. We're watching people doing something that could well be the most stressful thing they'll ever do. As far as they know the car could explode at any time, or it could fall on them trapping them in the flames or any number of other things. Whether these things are actually likely or not is immaterial, it's all the things that would be running through these people's head. But they overcame that and did what they had to do.

I have a very close friend who is a fireman and he deals with situations very differently to me. He's used to the stress of the situation. He's used to seeing death. It's just his job and he's de-sensitised to it. I'm not. I was driving along behind a truck in rush hour traffic a few years ago. Long story short, the truck in front of the one in front of me braked very suddenly and the truck in front of me didn't notice. Drove into the back of the other truck and crushed the cab. I screeched to a stop, jumped out and ran to the front of the lorry to see what had happened an if I could help. I'm first aid trained so I should be of some use. I was stood in the middle of the road looking at a crushed cab with the driver crushed against the wheel, unconscious. There was blood dripping from the cab. I looked back to the huge queue of traffic that was stopped behind my car and saw the most terrible thing I've ever seen. Just a huge row of people, all just sat in their cars waiting for someone else to deal with the problem. It was probably the worst moment of my life. No-one else gave a shit and I was watching a man die.

My phone was dead so I ran back to the car behind mine and asked the woman driving to call an ambulance, which she did. I ran back to the cab to see if there was anything I could do and I just froze. I couldn't deal with the stress, my brain just tried to shut down. What snapped me out of it was a guy running toward me to help, from about twenty cars further back down the queue. Just having someone else help - not being alone - was enough and we got the guy out of the cab. Eventually a few other people helped, but it took them a while to come forward.

Every one of the people in this video is risking their life to help someone they don't know. They stepped forward and the guy survived. To sit back in your comfy chair and criticise a construction worker in an incredibly stressful situation not doing precisely the right thing is just the wrong way to look at it. They manned the fuck up and saved his life. You've just seen a lot of very ordinary people do something incredible and they deserve credit for that. If I saw a fire crew do the same thing I'd be disgusted, but that's not what they are.

Your mind goes blank and it takes a huge amount of effort to get anything done in that situation. I've got all the time in the world for every one of the people in this video. It wasn't text book, but they saved him, and deserve all the credit for it.

Voodoo, Islam, Christianity, Judaism...just more of the same shit, different day. All great ways to provide the cleric class with a comfy living.

But you must note that some are crazier versions than others. For example, AIDS is worse than Herpes. Both are STDs but I am less concerned of one versus the other. Or take guns... varying levels of guns... Yes, those are loose comparisons, but the point still remains. Everything is based on levels.

In fact, there are quite insane atheists who believe in their opinions so much that it creates irrational hatred.

Anyone have a comfy couch for 3 nights? If not I'll do AirBNB. I've been told I fart in my sleep after a couple of beers.

I don't have a couch. You can sleep outside in a dag house! Would you give me the root/administrator access to VS server if I let you stay in it? j/k!

Hiroshima: Dropping the Bomb

Morganth says...

Pearl Harbor thrust the US into the war, though it had little to no bearing on the decision of whether or not to drop the bomb. Throughout the island-hopping Pacific campaign, it was noticed that the Japanese would never (or very rarely) surrender. Even if a soldier was the last man alive on an overrun island, he would fight. If he ran out of bullets, he would charge with a sword. In a few places, civilians threw themselves along with their children off of cliffs by the thousands because the Japanese government had told them that American troops would rape and torture them.

So the question was, what's going to be the human cost of a land invasion of Japan? They assumed they would have to fight not just entrenched enemy soldiers fighting for their homes, but the civilian population as well. It was also assumed this would mean the war would drag on for much longer.

Hindsight is 20/20 and we can look at this in comfy chairs from an academic setting. They didn't have such privilege.

Kitty Hugging His Best Friend

On the Trail of Genghis Khan

Praetor says...

From my little suburban world I am not at the mercy of the seasons. I don't have to worry about my livelihood getting killed by predators. I choose which part of the world I want my dinner to be from not worrying if I am going to be eating at all, and go on vacations to places like England, New Zealand, Australia, Germany in less than a day.

I just don't think the freedom of being able to walk your camel a dozen miles a day in any direction compares to the staggering amounts of freedom you get from an industrialized civilization. The fact that I am debating this topic with a complete stranger from potentially anywhere in the world thanks to the internet should be mentioned as well. I could still travel to places like this if I really felt the urge to.

Or, you know, watch a documentary about it in an air conditioned room with a comfy sofa and coffee from Java...

! Momma Deer Kicks Dogs Ass !

Sagemind says...

I must say, I grew up around wild animals, I know the drill. Last year, we had a mama bear and three cubs living in our backyard for a week living off the apple trees. I have to protect and pull back my dog twice. We have deer all the time, even a moose or two. I've also been present when a German Shepard picked up a poodle that was walking by a cafe and tried to shake it too death. I was there and I was first to jump on the Shepard. It wasn't even my dog. I know my instincts and what I am capable of. A dog is a family member, and I know I'd lay my life down for my kids before I ever considered the outcome - These protective instincts would definitely come into play here.

And no, I don't see Bambi when I look at these animals. I have taken wildlife training as well as the hunter core program. I have been face-to-face with many, many wild animals.

So, although your comment is valid, and I do understand where you are coming from, I can personaly make my comments here and feel validated by them. - Cheers!
