TYT - Rosetta

Bravo Newtboy !!! Yes I was thinking the same thing !!!
One huge comet blown up is NO LONGER A HUGE COMET. But lots of smaller ones that mostly would burn up on re-entry !!!!

"Some day we're going to have to nuke a comet"

No.

Nuking a comet is probably the worst thing you can do to try and divert its path. At best the nuke would shatter the comet and not divert its path, meaning instead of one huge comet intersecting the earth you now have many, many huge comets intersecting the earth.

There are alternative methods out there that will nudge a comet when it is far out, avoiding the "blow it up" mentality the laymen seems to think is prevalent.

We've landed on a comet!

A "wall" is sorta a funny idea.... you can see single pictures of this comet where boulders are resting on surfaces that are perpendicular to each other. I would think pretty much any surface on this thing is good.

They have an image from the surface now. It might be up against a wall.

Refire-refire-refire-refire!
*quality
EDIT: Apparently it may have 'bounced', but it is sitting on the comet for now. Word is that a motor used to stop it from bouncing also failed, but somehow it landed anyway. I hope they manage to fire the harpoons before anything happens.

The harpoons didn't actually fire.

At around 8:45 a.m. PST, ESA said the lander’s harpoons did not fire, meaning that Philae is not anchored to the comet. Without being firmly attached to the ground, the worry is that the lander may fall off. ESA is now looking at options to refire the harpoons. -wired
