Hot Metal Memory

Spoon_Gouge says...

To my knowledge it's not toxic and only requires heat to reform regardless of it's form. I had a kit once that used a band of Nitinol wound like a spring. You would wind it around this wheel system such that one end could be submerged in cold water and the other could be submerged in hot. The thing would take off like a shot and spray water everywhere. Still, pretty neat.

The BEST Turkey You Have Ever Had

burdturgler says...

Ingredients

* 1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey

For the brine:

* 1 cup kosher salt
* 1/2 cup light brown sugar
* 1 gallon vegetable stock
* 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
* 1/2 tablespoon allspice berries
* 1/2 tablespoon candied ginger (or 1/4 t ground ginger)
* 1 gallon iced water

For the aromatics:

* 1 red apple, sliced
* 1/2 onion, sliced
* 1 cinnamon stick
* 1 cup water
* 4 sprigs rosemary
* 6 leaves sage
* Canola oil (or corn oil)

Directions

Combine all brine ingredients, except ice water, in a stockpot, and bring to a boil. Stir to dissolve solids, then remove from heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.

Early on the day of cooking, (or late the night before) combine the brine and ice water in a clean 5-gallon bucket. Place thawed turkey breast side down in brine, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area (like a basement) for 6 hours. Turn turkey over once, half way through brining.

A few minutes before roasting, heat oven to 500 degrees. Combine the apple, onion, cinnamon stick, and cup of water in a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 5 minutes.

Remove bird from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard brine.

Place bird on roasting rack inside wide, low pan and pat dry with paper towels. Add steeped aromatics to cavity along with rosemary and sage. Tuck back wings and coat whole bird liberally with canola (or other neutral) oil.

Roast on lowest level of the oven at 500 degrees F. for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cover breast with double layer of aluminum foil, insert probe thermometer into thickest part of the breast and return to oven, reducing temperature to 350 degrees F. Set thermometer alarm (if available) to 161 degrees. A 14 to 16 pound bird should require a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours of roasting. Let turkey rest, loosely covered for 15 minutes before carving.

I...I...I Think It Touched My Brain!

spoco2 says...

Upvote just because it has a Neti pot. Although he has serious issues if he can't use it correctly.

I have one and they're friggen brilliant! It doesn't hurt, it doesn't make you gag, it doesn't even feel weird... unless:
* When you tilt your head you do so with a backwards slant so it falls out of your nose and runs into your mouth instead... that's not nice
* You have loaded up the water with so much salt it's not in solution so you end up with actual grains of salt in your nose... that kinda hurts
* You put something other than warm salty water in it... like... really cold water, or really hot water, or urine.

Basically, if you have a sinus infection, or gunged up nasal area in general, and are having issues with it... try one of these, they're really cheap, considered safe by all medical practitioners and have been used for centuries in various countries.

oh, and as a bonus unexpected side effect, my skeptic wife told me that it's stopped me snoring too... so bravo to these things.

Renewable Energy From The Deep Ocean

Kreegath says...

How much of the generated energy is used for pumping the cold water, and how much is lost in transportation from the generators themselves?
This sounds like a neat way of generating energy, but at the same time it seems highly doubtful that it's practically doable.

Korean dish: Cold buckwheat noodles (naeng myun)

Issykitty says...

Instead of rinsing with all that water, I usually use a bowl of iced water (LOTS of ice) which I dump the noodles into after draining them. I swirl the noodles in this super-cold water until they are very very cold and then drain and squeeze them out. This seems to work fine. also, the more hot sauce, the better! I like to put a lot of very spicy radish kimchee on my naengmyun. I actually have a much simpler recipe that tastes great and is spiced up in a way that you don't have to add any hot pepper sauce. I learned from my mama, so I can't divulge her secrets!

Octopus VS diver

11807 says...

That's just the thing ridesallyridenc...it WOULD HAVE been a good option, but it never went that far. Besides, the diver was too busy trying to keep his mask on and reg in his mouth. Given that they were wearing dry suits and at depth (about 100 feet, my guess, given most wrecks are about 100 or deeper), when ice cold water starts to flood into your mask and up your nose, it's enough to get even the most experienced divers to panic in that situation. So mask and regulator were priority one.

And who knows, no one could have been carrying a dive knife with them anyway...

Washing machine cat is not amused.

Cut a glass bottle with just string, acetone, & a lighter

Doc_M says...

shenanigans?
If anything is doing anything here it's heat, rapid temperature change. Acetone does not effect glass in any way.

Better instructions:
Cut a loop of string to fit the bottle as shown, soak in acetone/flammable liquid (slow burning), light and rotate so the flames evenly burn around the string. The string won't be consumed, just the acetone. dunk the bottle into cold water while applying force to break the bottle. If this isn't just complete BS, it will break at its weak point as the temp rapidly changes. ...I still bet its BS though.

Cloth Diapers

persephone says...

I think it all depends on how you clean them. Sure if you use bleaching agents and hot water and several rinses and phosphate washing powder, then it's not very environmentally responsible.

If you scrape off the shit straight away into the toilet, then soak in vinegar and wash in cold water, on a normal cycle and dry in the sun, I think the impact is minimal-the same as washing a pair of underpants.(just a whole load of underpants)
