M83 - Midnight City

Fantomas says...

Well the opening scene in the classroom is a shot for shot remake of a scene from Akira, and the glowing eyed children is from Village of the Damned. So there's definitely a cinematic influence in there.

Would love to see a movie based on this video - X-men, only much darker. And one based on Sabotage.

Wolfenstein The New Order

RedSky says...

I'm cautiously encouraged. They've said they're doing single player only, there's some apparent focus here on creating memorable characters and scenarios rather than explosions go boom, plus they've released what looks like snippets of in-game play albeit cinematics rather than just creating fancy CGI trailers. Only time will tell I guess.

Wolfenstein The New Order

sixshot says...

Looks okay... but doesn't look any different from the other games that follow the same FPS game design flow-style. FPS mode in some places, cinematics in another, and possibly a few QTE mixed in somewhere. This is what id Software is now -- just another game developer studio. PC version? They'll probably will laugh at you for bringing it up.

Bohemian Rhapsody: Star Wars Edition

chingalera says...

dzonny n' poolcleaner, here's another vote just for you two and some unsolicited insight as to perhaps why this vid isn't enjoying some stellar erection err..ascension: Star Wars fans as advanced in age as those depicted here well, they're dying-off or have moved-on. The fond childhood memories of epic cinematic outer-space masturbation have given-way to the worries and trials of a civilization saturated with entertainment, regurgitate art and culture, and the concerns of real-world issues like, "My children will never experience the thrill of cinema like I did because all the fucking movie theaters are either closed, or packed with 16 pieces of cinematic crap that costs way too much for a poor-quality product. Oh that and the demise of language and culture, as the world is turned into a single amalgamate of herd-like automatons.

Plus this song has been parodied so many times as to become nauseating.

But I'm just a cynical bitch so give it some time....more SWG's will come out to play after I remind everyone how much the franchise SUCKS DONKEY BALLS!

Worst Videogame Product Placement Yet (Alan Wake)

Vic2Point0 says...

I disagree 100%, this was one of the BEST product placements ever in a video game! You're just not getting the subtle humor. To me, it was very obvious. First, take note of the fact that they were inarguably wanting to make this game feel a bit like a television series. This is made most evident by the way they ended and began each episode (not to mention the fact that they called them "episodes" to begin with), but also by the cinematics in battle, the independent camera controls that let you see what was behind Wake as he was running forward, the narration, the fact that all the manuscripts had to appear on screen with the author's voice reading it aloud- erm, I think I made my point there.

So what would a television series do, naturally, at a moment like this? Why, GO TO A COMMERCIAL BREAK, OF COURSE! That's why this TV was in the break room. Commercials? Break room? You get it now?

However, I wouldn't even agree that this did any noteworthy damage to the tension. Because, arguably, the most "scary" part was over. At this point, all you had to do was get by that chandelier ball thingy and you're outside with Barry Wheeler, comic relief! I thought it was brilliant.

5 ways to know you are watching a Spielberg Movie

chingalera says...

Modern Era being say, last thirty-forty years but not the last fifty to seventy though. He's as fantastic a composer for the formulaic music he creates-I agree he ranks among the greats of cinematic composition but his claim to fame being so ingrained in pop culture with Star Wars for me means he kinna squeaked-into the realm of 20th century American composers like Copeland. Bernstein, or Gershwin. I dunno, he's more like a Howard Shore or Hans Zimmer for me, not quite reaching the all-star team of 20th century long-haired first-stringers.

Maybe I'm simply prejudiced against the all-consuming cheese-fog of Star Wars, Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, etc. Maybe I'll try the experiment of listening to one of his compositions without the backdrop of a film. No wait, see I did that-In 77' I bought the double LP of the Star Wars soundtrack (yahhh, I was frikkin' 12) and got bored with it-Never get bored listening to Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite or Ravel's Bolero, though!

John Williams is a fantastic composer.

Some people might call this heresy, but personally I think he should be ranked up there with Beethoven and Tchaikovsky for grandiose orchestral music.

He's certainly the greatest composer of the modern era.

Bad Acting From The Last Airbender by M. Night Shyamalan

Shepppard says...

The story: Shamalan wrote the screenplay after his kids liked the cartoon. However, he decided to make a helluva lot of cuts to the movie to make it more cinematic. He completely neglected a TON of things that made the original great, especially the comedy.

The also tried to change race/element rolls, so instead of traditional Chinese, the firebenders were Indian, which also pissed a lot of people off, because one thing he could have done RIGHT was cast Dante Basco (Rufio, from hook, and the original voice actor of prince zuko) as his respective character.

The names were also mucked up, (Ahh-ng instead of Aang, Soakah instead of Sock-ah) and the overall tone of the movie was god, freaking awful.

It was a double whammy, he made the storyline of a kids cartoon even dumber than it already was (sorry people who love the show, but it is a kids show, they're not meant to make total sense.) and in doing so alienated any parents that went to see the movie with their kids.

And because he changed the storyline so much, he caused fans of the show to hate the movie because of its.. well, bad-ness.

Overall, I end with a quote.

Final Fantasy XV (used to be Versus XIII)

artician says...

Looks like a return to form, at least for the "modern" FF games. Final Fantasy will always hold an extremely special place in my heart, no matter how bad they get.

But this does look promising.

It's refreshing to see a project with several years of a head start. Lots of gameplay footage, and with such polished cinematics. Every other developer should be ashamed when they release a third-party-contracted, pre-rendered video for their games promotion.
