Alabama Tea Partier Ad: "Gather Your Armies"

blankfist says...

>> ^kronosposeidon:

I just talked to the ghost of George Washington, and he told me, "Gather your armies...to put down this tax rebellion."

That old chestnut, huh? The federal government was in incredible debt after the Revolutionary war, and if I'm not mistaken that's what prompted that tax (too lazy to look into it now). I believe GW's justification was that they now had representation so the taxes were justified. It's an excise tax, so I do think he's justified in placing that tax. I think it's income tax the teabaggers are claiming to take issue with.

Also GW passed into the law this gem shortly after the Whiskey Tax, so he has always been one of my least favorite Framers to cite for shining examples of federal political precedence. Adams isn't a great one either.

But jefferson? Straight up happy wiener rubs for that motherfucker!

Fox News' Fair and Balanced Coverage of Obama's Nuclear Deal

spoco2 says...

AND they are using the ol' chestnut of 'some people say', or in this case 'critics say'.

IE. Fucking no-one has to actually say it, THEY say it and attribute it to the nameless 'some people' or 'critics'.

Fucking terrible.

Japanese Whaling Ship Shears Bow off High Speed Anti-Whaler

bcglorf says...

Kinda reminds me of the old "Nelson Mandala freedom fighter or terrorist" chestnut.

Except replacing substituting white men for Japanese(works) and black Africans for whales(fail)...

The Japanese are skirting international law to harvest animals, which is bad. The Sea Shepherd, through antics like this and others, is actively endangering human lives. The endanger not only their own lives and anyone sent to rescue them, but those of the other ships around them that they choose to attack. That is much, much worse and the only way to cut it any different is to value human and other animal life equally. This shows in who does and does not support these loons.

Atheist Nations Are More Peaceful

gwiz665 says...

Obviously, we must say that old chestnut: corrolation does not imply causation. That is, the fact that more "peaceful" nations are generally non-religious, does not mean that this is the reason they are more peaceful.

Bach, Toccata and Fugue in d arranged for Timpani and Piano

dystopianfuturetoday says...

>> ^legacy0100:
timpani isn't a very well constructed instrument now that I think about it. 3rd world drums play a much clearer, louder, deeper sounds than these behemoths. These bulbous cauldrons sound way too flat to say the least.
Perhaps because western orchestra's always been about the strings and the winds, and not so much on the percussions.

This isn't an example of a good timpani sound, or a particularly wise orchestration. It looks like a college recital, performed by a student who is still learning, so I wouldn't base your judgment of this instrument on one video.

There are many cool sounding low pitched ethnic drums, but none of them allow you to tune to a particular pitch on the fly. If you look closely, you'll see the performer adjusting a pedal - which tightens or loosens the head - at the base of these drums. A nice set of drums, played by a skilled player will give you a huge, clear awesome sound.

I'd recommend you check out a good recording of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, Orff's Carmina Burana or Holst's Planets for a good idea of how Timpani are supposed to sound. You hear it quite a bit in film music too.

Percussion was underused in Western art music up until the 20th Century, so while most of the classical chestnuts only have a bit of perc here and there, you see quite a bit in music written over the last 100 years.

I arranged Bach's Passacaglia in Cm for Vibes, Marimba and Bass (with low C extention) for my junior recital, and it worked really well. I should dig that out and do it again somewhere.

I'm thinking of trying this recipe for Thanksgiving. What do you think?

Roasted Japanese Sweet Potatoes with Scallion Butter
Serves8

* Active time:10 min
* Start to finish:1 1/4 hr

November 2007
If you’ve never had pale-fleshed Japanese sweet potatoes before, you’ll be surprised by their subtler, drier flesh, which tastes unmistakably of chestnut. A bit of miso mixed into the scallion butter stealthily rounds out the interplay of sweet and umami that will have you eating all the way through to the last flaky remnants of skin.

* 8 small slender Japanese or Garnet sweet potatoes (4 to 5 lb total)
* 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, well softened
* 1 1/2 tablespoons miso paste (preferably white)
* 3 tablespoons finely chopped scallion

* Preheat oven to 450°F with rack in upper third.
* Prick potatoes all over with a fork and put on a foil-lined large baking sheet. Bake until very soft when squeezed, 45 minutes to 1 hour.
* While potatoes bake, stir together butter, miso, and scallion until combined.
* Slit hot potatoes lengthwise and, using oven mitts, push in sides to puff up potato. Serve with some scallion butter in center of each and with additional scallion butter on the side.

Cooks’ notes:

* Scallion butter can be made 4 days ahead and chilled, covered. Bring to warm room temperature and stir before using.
* Sweet potatoes can be roasted (but not cut) 4 hours ahead and kept at room temperature, covered with foil. Reheat potatoes on a baking sheet on middle rack of a 350°F oven until heated through, about 20 minutes.

How To: Chicken Lo Mein (Blog Entry by NordlichReiter)

MarineGunrock says...

Stir Fry is my favorite dish to make.

I usually use:

1 lb Quartered baby carrots
A few handfuls of Snow peas (don't slice these)
1 can sliced Water chestnuts
1 each Orange, Red and Yellow bell peppers
8 oz. White mushrooms, sliced
A pound or so of Broccoli crowns

And I use Steak. I use fresh veggies, I just think they're better.
Start cooking your rice if you want long grain, or if you use instant you can wait.

Cut the veggies all up and put them in to their own bowls.
Cook the steak (sliced into whatever you want) in the wok with the stir-fry sauce. Once the steak is cooked, remove from the heat so it doesn't get over-cooked. Just make sure not to cook it too much because you'll be putting it back on the heat in a few minutes.

Pour in some sauce and the broccoli and carrots first. Once those cook for a few minutes, add the rest of the veggies in whatever proportions you want. I usually have too much stuff to fit in the wok, so that's why I keep them in separate bowls. Once they're sufficiently cooked, add the steak back in to heat it up.

Remember to periodically add the sauce as it's all cooking. Once it's all cooked, serve over a bed of rice.

For best results, eat with wooden chopsticks.

Christopher Hitchens Slams Sarah Palin On Her Beliefs

13185 says...

Just to add to my previous post, Hitchens could even criticize her for the extreme nature of her faith, for example the witch doctor blessing her in church, her believing Alaska to be one of the refuge states during the "End Times" etc.
Unfortunately he doesn't do this and says she's a religious fanatic and the only reason he provide is because she believes she's been saved. This then opens the door the others in the debate slamming Hitchens for "atheistic extremism"... that old chestnut. Unfortunately, most of the audience probably then agrees with them, so debate lost in some sense for Hitchens.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr on Governor Palin's Reading List (Election Talk Post)

my15minutes says...

aaaand who vetted that particular quote from her speech?

_________

"We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty and sincerity and dignity", she said, a Pegler quote that also appeared in the book "Right From the Beginning" by Pat Buchanan.

She did not acknowledge Pegler by name, merely citing 'a writer'. The speech was written by Matthew Scully, a senior speech writer for George W. Bush.

they couldn't have just stuck with the gipper or something? another old chestnut about 'the party of lincoln' instead? wow. hank hill would've been an improvement!

then they just refer to him as "a writer" in her speech?

OK, no more Manbaby pressure...I looked deep inside myself and realized I wanted a Lady/critttter rendition of Squink walking me, and now I am truly scarred for life. Uh, no innuendo if you are the grownup I think you are, that would make the scar a keloid...

My son will disown me if I manbaby him, as he rightfully should.

Oh yes, there is a growing consensus...Manbaby! Manbaby! Manbaby that photo!!!

I see you still lurking around this video. I don't know if I've ever seen you so angry here. I can't imagine Squink with rabies.

In reply to this comment by critttter:
^ Snoozedoctor your premise is valid, of course, if white guys feel comfortable voting for white guys, that old chestnut, but floating Hillary as a paramount feminist voting cause is like backing Margeret Thatcher just because she's a woman. If this really worked, don't you suppose the Republicans would have had a female candidate if it all boils down to such a basic premise??

The Republicans are masters at dividing the Democrats, who willingly walk right into it. Sad.
