I can see where you are coming from on this. In the sense that it might then encourage people to accept using it, because it works.

My problem with that line of reasoning though is that torture actually is effective. The simplest proof being that we wouldn't have every single national intelligence agency using it(directly or indirectly by a less squeamish ally as we 'civilized' nations prefer to do it).

Your links to the ineffectiveness of torture only look at the narrowest possible goals from it. Somebody like Saddam Hussein usually didn't care about Jack Bauer style, minutes count specific intel. Getting the names of everyone you knew or 'conspired' with mattered, and torture IS effective at getting people to talk. The trouble your links note is that torture victims will say literally anything to get you to stop. When looking for information though, victims can't name real people unless they know them. Better still for guys like Saddam, if you get yourself 3 victims in the same movement, you can cross reference things and build a list of suspects. To more ethical nations like us that's unactionable intelligence, but if you don't care if you sweep up 5 innocents along with the 5 people that really were a threat to you, it still 'worked'.

Torture also is widely used simply as a tool to instill fear. When your citizens have seen the broken shells of people who's loyalty was deemed questionable, fear keeps them in step. It worked for Saddam until external forces stopped him, and it's helped keep 3 generations in power in North Korea.

Getting back closer to the video, things we don't like don't go away just because we refuse to talk about them. Rape, torture, and violence aren't like the boogeyman that will go away if we just stop talking and thinking about them so much. We need to accept that there are terrible things in our world that people do and benefit from doing them. These are things that people use to gain a feeling of power, or to truly gain real tangible power over other people.

Of course we have to discuss them responsibly, and the danger of shaming victims is an equally real thing to be aware of. At the same time though, humor is one of the ways of bridging the gap to people dealing with trauma, so jokes about things that cause trauma like rape, violence and torture have an honest place in making things better as well.

Well, things are not as rosy as folks like Steven Pinker would like us to believe. As much as I dislike resorting to Hollywood for philosophical insights, True Detective was absolutely on point in this quote:

„Transference of fear and self-loathing to an authoritarian vessel. It's catharsis. He absorbs their dread with his narrative. Because of this, he's effective in proportion to the amount of certainty he can project.“

Now, they were talking about a preacher. But I'd argue this applies to scapegoats as well. And if your arguments undermine the scapegoat, it starts losing its efficiency as a focal point of people's discontent.

Most of us have so much day-to-day shit to deal with that outsourcing the macro-shit to a boogeyman, any boogeyman, helps us get through the day without wanting to bash our head against the wall. Or bash someone else's head in, for that matter.

This doesn't excuse this level of self-delusion, but maybe it explains it to some degree. I'd say keep doing what I know you've been doing for many years: present your case in a respectful manner.

So, what's his motivation? Is he on the take from the military-/intelligence-industrial complex? Is he genuinely worried about the boogeyman to a point of irrational fear? Is he using security as a means to accumulate more personal power?

Whatever his reasons may be, it worries me to see folks just like him in ever increasing numbers occupying positions of power all over the place, all singing the same tune: the implicit right of security trumps all other constitutional rights, so shut the fuck up and obey.

no one is for blatant wealth redistribution, it's a huge strawman conjured up by the right. No has ever advocated that the government should come in and forcibly take everyone's money and redistribute it evenly. It's another scare tactic boogeyman the right likes to conjure.

the problem is, as you've already said, a taxation system that HEAVILY favors the already rich.

There will always be rich people and there will always be poor people. for as long as we have currency, this will always be the case. the question of fairness and how rich people are treated differently than the poor. The rich are allowed to get away with things the poor would never get away with. In certain cases, rich people get many perks for free that a poor person would have to pay for which is the opposite of what should happen. A rich person, by definition, can afford more without being burdened.

If you believe in the founding principles in America, you believe that every person is equal. Rich people are not "better" than poor people" rich and poor alike are endowed with rights that cannot be taken away. Yet the reality is quite different.

The problem is two fold:

1. When you have not just rich people, but uber rich people, It's far easier for them to exert influence over the gov't to get them to make rules that favor them so they can get even more rich. Elections need to have all private money removed from them...period. voting with your money is not equal. 1 person, 1 vote, end of story.

2. As I said before all things being equal, it wouldn't matter so much that there is a huge disparity in wealth if even the poorest of us didn't have to worry about basic necessities such as health care. One major illness and everything you've worked for is gone in an instant. This simply is not fair. Only the rich and uber rich are not seriously hampered by major illnesses

The very first link is about the police entrapment on the Brooklyn Bridge. One of the links is the above piece from Komo News about an unrelated exposure charge. And another is about how Iran supports the Occupy movement (fear the boogeyman!).

So! All these articles, and they amount to... a few isolated issues that don't nearly account for all the numbers posted, and a couple of them are for unrelated charges where the person might have been caught in or near an Occupy event.

My overall analysis: Aside from QM being full of shit as usual, it's time to let the camps go. They made a splash, but now they are just being used as fodder for the right wing lie-machines. There are just too many unrelated crazies that come to the camps and interfere with the message. It's time to Occupy the polls, and put the energy into publicly supported legislation.
