Marzipan recipe for you:

1 pound of almonds
1 pound of powdered sugar
1/2 - 1 egg white
1 tea spoon of lemon juice

Scald the almonds in boiling water and remove the skin. Grind the almonds into a fine powder. Then grind them a second time together with the powdered sugar. Mix in egg white and lemon juice until it is a solid mass. Now you can shape it into funny shapes, or cover pieces of it with dark chocolate. The former is a great activity for the kids!

How to Boil Water

How to Boil Water

There are simple tasks and then there are incredibly simple tasks.
Boiling water is even simpler than that. But hey, nobody's calling you a moron-
—there's a first time for everything.

Obama: "N Korea Broke The Rules" - Iran Has a Choice To Make

blankfist says...

I think boiling water needs to simmer down. Sorry if again the UsesProsac thing bothers you, but come on, calm down. It's all in good fun, no? You are not ugly, your breath doesn't smell like assholes, and your face does not look like Stephen Hawking's testicles. I don't even know what you look like, and even if I did that would be a ridiculous comparison, no?

Boondock Saints final spectacle--Reap it!

Krupo says...

So one of the brothers lost his voice. Their 'dad' Billy Connolly did the DVD commentary track and shared his special lost voice remedy: Take apple cider vinegar, 3 teaspoonsful, mix with 1 teaspoonful of runny/clear honey.

Then boil the water and pour in 3 or 4 tablespoons of boiling water, gargle as much as possible as hot as bearable. Gargle at least 3 times.

Speak as little as possible - start humming later to ease throat in.

This remedy allowed the scene to be filmed without delay.

How do you buy music? (Music Talk Post)

darkrowan says...

I can say for years that I too detested iTunes for the DRM. But after a while, and given my patience with computing (which led me down the path of working in IT) I kinda gave in, bought a second hand iPod Nano, and have been happy since.

But to answering your questions:

1. I consider the old experiment of putting a frog in boiling water vs cold then slowing boiling them to death. The idea is the frog gets use to latter and won't jump out even when it's near death.

The RIAA, on the other hand, reacted like the former when presented with Napster. It existed, almost literally, under their noses. They had no "warming up" period to the idea of digitally available music. Because of the initial knee-jerk reaction they whole of the association is still reeling from the notion that anyone could rip them off in a few clicks. The slowness is due to the hard coding of the idea, in executive heads, that the control of the physical media the music is listened to on is paramount. Given that you can rip tracks from a CD or convert files from one format to another and from one device to another, this isn't possible. Draconian is my usual word for mentality because of this. They missed the boat for the digital age and are slowly dying at an industry because of it. A very slow death, but a death nonetheless.

2. All that above being said, your options right now are limited.

  • Buy CDs, use software to legally rip them into mp3 or wav (windows media player can even do the former if you'd like automatically). Then store the CDs away for safe keeping. I've been doing this off and on for years myself and have quite a collection of MP3 files to show for it.
  • Find the limited websites out there that sell DRM free music. I won't list any personally because I find their selection not worth buying from.
  • Become a digital miscreant and convert files out of their DRM state. Out here in the states that violates the DMCA (Section 1201 if you are wondering. It signing into law is the only action I have yet to forgiven Bill Clinton for, and I even forgive him for the whole lying under oath about blowjobs). I cannot really get you in the right direction on this other than to tell you to google for something... gah, I can't remember... the HYMM of our fathers PROJECT makes for an interesting REQUIEM.

Thats all I have to say. There are way to support artists but not the industry, but they require you to work at it.

Colin Powell Endorses Barack Obama on Meet The Press

Simmer down there boiling water. You're getting all huffy over something insignificant. Just because I'm not aligning with your partisan rhetoric doesn't mean I deserve to be blasted. Where's that liberal tolerance I keep hearing about?

I do research beyond pro-Obama YouTube videos and the Huffington Post. Maybe those who don't shouldn't label others as "lying" to themselves or "ignoring reality". I dislike both parties, rougy, and mainly because I don't see much difference in them. I've given proof that I'm not making up this connection between neconservatism and liberalism, but if that's too difficult for your fragile liberal sensibilities to handle then please feel free to continue to downvote my comments.

How the Cell Phone + Popcorn Trick Really Works

charliem says...

>> ^Lordoderus:
I would imagine that the table blocks a large portion of the microwaves that are emitted. That's probably why they only pop a kernel our two of corn instead of trying to fry and egg or something like that. I'm guessing doing this trick once or twice isn't going to really hurt you. Probably about the same as getting an X-ray. I wouldn't suggest doing it daily though, that would probably have some negative effects on your health. I am of course basing this on absolutely nothing at all. Just my weak understanding of microwaves and electronics.

No, actually its worse than getting an X-Ray.
An X-Ray is a single burst of radiation, for about 1/10th of a second.
This...this is continuous exposure for, what they recommend, at least 30 seconds.

Theres a reason your microwave has that shield in the window, and it aint to obscure your view of the food cooking.

The most power an X-Ray will emit is about 120kEv, that's equivalent to approximately 5.3*10^-23 watt-hours.
In comparison, microwave ovens are capable of outputting 1500-2000 watt-hours of power.

That is ~ 2,830,188,679,245,283,018,867,924 times more power than your typical X-Ray.

Safe ?
Mmmmm....

This assumes that the radiation from the microwave oven magnometer isnt occluded by wood, and you are practically right next to it, but even still, lets allow say 90% of the energy is absorbed by the wood, and you are standing at least 30 feet back (assuming the power drops off by a factor of 3 for each foot you are from the source).

So, 300 times less power from distance, and 90% less from the wood....thats still 6 watt-hours of power hitting you.

Thats still 112,347,114,500,000,000,000 times more potent than an x-ray.

Granted, microwave energy isnt ionising, like X-Ray energy is, but even still...why would anyone in their right mind expose themselves to that kind of danger ? The thing is made to excite (read: boil) water molecules. What are we, like 90% water ?

I dunno about you, but I prefer to not be boiled from the inside out.

Boiling Water Turns to Snow Instantly

Boiling Water Turns to Snow Instantly

9410 says...

Whats happening here?

Presumably the boiling water turns to water vapour fairly rapidly, and the water vapour cools extremely quickly thanks to its gaseous nature?

^ CONCERNING STRANGELETS:

First of all, strangelets are merely hypothetical type of matter. None have so far been observed or produced. We would see some corrution of Neutron stars more often if the stuff was actual and not theoretical. Lambda particles I think have happened, but they decay so fast it is not really a subject of much fear mongering

Secondly, the RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) in the US has been working for 8 years now and no strangelets have been produced there. In comparison, LHC collisions will have more energy, thus making it even less probable a strangelet might form (equivalent would be ice forming in boiling water). In addition, LHC quarks will be even more dilute than at RHIC.

Read this study on RHIC by MIT, Yale and Princeton physicists to find out more.

"It is believed that the higher energy of the lead-lead collisions of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), compared to the RHIC, will produce more strange quarks in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) than are produced at RHIC's QGP. This higher production of strange quarks might allow for production of a strangelet at the LHC, and searches are planned for such upon commencement of collisions at the LHC ALICE detector."

"Angelis et al., "Model of Centauro and strangelet production in heavy ion collisions", Phys. Atom. Nucl. 67:396-405 (2004) arXiv:nucl-th/0301003 "

I thought that was an interesting read on the subject. It's all theoretical though, so far, we haven't really seen the stuff at all.

Sorry for the long gap between posts, the hurricane messed with my normal routine.

OMG THE HADRON COLLIDER IS TURNED ON!!!

Superheated Water Danger

pho3n1x says...

a) the water in the cup with the fork probably bubbled throughout the microwaving process.

b) metal in the microwave is for when the microwave is actively in use, afterwards is fine.

c) i suppose both. or place something in the glass with surface imperfections, such as a plastic fork.

d) superheating water can be dangerous, as it appears as though the water is not of boiling temperature. i'm sure you can still see water vapor, but it can be misleading, and putting your finger in the glass would be akin to placing your hand in violently boiling water. the container will also be very hot. also, most classic glassware and crystal can explode under those kind of temperatures.

Your Brain on Drugs...Apparently

Clearly, the white part of your brain is tasteless and bland. The yummy yellow part is loaded with cholesterol.

And if your brain is thrown in boiling water, it is said to be, what neurological research scientists call, "poached."

Any questions?

Republican Hypocrisy Lives! Larry Craig still kicking (Politics Talk Post)

blankfist says...

Whoa, simmer down there boiling water. Fiscal irresponsibility and nation-building are Democratic "things", too. Democrats have proven to be interventionists. Have we forgotten about Wilsonian interventionism? Woodrow Wilson believed every man had the right to self-determination and further believed it was America's duty to protect democracy throughout the world. Wilson sent troops to Mexico to proclaim martial law during a revolution. He was quoted saying his efforts were to "teach Latin Americans to elect good men." And, let us not forget his interventionist role in Europe which aided in the Versailles Treaty. We know how that ended for us.

What about Franklin Roosevelt? Hey, tell me which right-wing mouthpiece publication is responsible for this quote: "Franklin Roosevelt relished his nation-building" Fox News? Nope. The New York Times did in regards to his interventionist policies in Haiti. FDR even said "I wrote Haiti's Constitution myself, and if I do say it, it was a pretty good little Constitution."

What about Lyndon Johnson in Vietnam? The Vietnam War has been categorized as LBJ's war. But, our involvement with Vietnam started during the cold war, which started to be realized when Harry S. Truman tried to contain communism in Southeast Asia in the 50s. And, hell, JFK was guilty of increasing financial aid and advisory assistance in South Vietnam. He fully adopted the National Security Action Memorandum 52 which was left over from the Eisenhower Administration that read in regards to South Vietnam: "The U.S. objective and concept of operations stated in the report are approved: to prevent communist domination of South Vietnam; to create in that country a viable and increasingly democratic society, and to initiate, on an accelerated basis, a series of mutually supporting actions of a military, political, economic, psychological and covert character designed to achieve this objective."

Will that do or should I continue?
