Totally reminds me of the first Tron movie too. Oh and SJG's Ogre...that brings back so many memories of my days as a child playing board games like Car Wars, Battletech, Ogre, etc.

The "Cabbage" strategy is basically the board game Go -- it's like the Asian chess. Surround territory and claim.

Can Video Games Make You Smarter? R video games good for U?
As someone who researches the effects of video games on education (primarily on learners of English as another language) I can tell you the empirical research into the topic is not nearly so cut and dried.
There was a lot of hype about the "brain age"-type games when they first came out, some of which this video references, but what we know now is that those types of games only make you "smarter" in the sense that they make you better at solving similar puzzle-types. In other words, the gains you see are really just the effects of practice. The supposed "smartness" does not transfer over to other skill areas. See this link for more info: http://pamkato.com/2013/04/17/do-brain-training-games-work-yes-no-and-maybe/
So basically everything referenced in this video can be explained by "practice" rather than by some special characteristic of the video games themselves (certainly video games make the practice part fun, though). Furthermore, there is pronounced lack of research into whether the benefits such as those reported in this video actually mean anything significant (i.e. whether being able to more concretely differentiate different levels of gray when you are younger actually leads to better vision when you are older compared with non-gamers, whether you retain the ability to read small text as you age better than non-gamers, etc.).
I do believe there are cognitive benefits to ALL kinds of gaming (board games, pen-and-paper RPGs, card games like poker, crossword puzzles, tic-tac-toe, etc.) but based on the empirical evidence so far I'm not convinced there is anything particularly special about video games that leads players to become "smarter" in the sort of general sense that is being suggested here.
The IT Crowd: Game Board
I like board games!
Introduction to Board Games
To play devils advocate:
the problem I have had trying to convince other people to try board games is simply learning the rules. Often they have a bewildering set of rules that must be learnt and enforced to play the game. This leads to arguments over interpretations of rules and so on.
Which is were video games win, because if there is one thing computers are good at, it is interpreting and enforcing byzantine rules.
Introduction to Board Games
King of Tokyo, Zombicide, Escape, Mansions of Madness, BSG the Board Game, Mice and Mystics (great co-operative game), X-Wing Miniatures game, Android: Netrunner (perhaps best 2 player game out there), Arkham Horror are just a few of the better games on my board game shelf... want to try 7 Wonders and many others... I play Small World, Forbidden Island, Eclipse, Ascension, and Summoner Wars on my iPad
Catan is a decent game, and does well as a gateway (I think Ticket to Ride is better, and perhaps even Pandemic)...
Love board gaming...

How can you talk about board games and not mention Catan?
Noam Chomsky - Free Market Fantasies
The primary problem I have with "free market" devotees is that they believe in an "all or nothing" paradigm. They think that everything has to work within a free-market model, and anything that deviates from that is communist and evil.
And I have a big problem with people who try to equate capitalism with mathematics, because the two are not analogous.
Capitalism is not an absolute law any more than a board game is.
