Evolution meets Religion (Science Talk Post)

BicycleRepairMan says...

The question of defining things into categories and different species is a very good point, Dakwins has a chapter on this in The Ancestor's Tale, It's called The salamanders tale, and I posted a video of it here http://www.videosift.com/video/Richard-Dawkins-The-Salamanders-Tale

One way to look at animals is to compare it to colors, ie: defining "blue" What is blue? it goes from "almost white" to "Almost black", and it goes from "almost purple" to "Almost green" and so on, the truth is that the number of blue shades is actually infinite, the same goes with every other color. The same is true with animals. Imagine if you only lived 3 minutes on a sunny afternoon, and you'd say "The sky is blue. Period" and I show you a picture from the same morning with a blood red sky, you'd perhaps say "That's a different sky, a blue sky cant become a red sky, its blue!" And that's how we see animals, a deer-like animal cant become a dolphin and a dinosaur cant become a bird., yet during the course of a few million years, that's exactly what has happened.

This is 2 pictures of the same person:

When did the kid turn into an old man? never, and all the time, of course, at no point in this mans life could you actually see, from one day to the next that he became older, but of course, he did. and we have photographic evidence, you can look on the web and find pictures of this guy when he was an infant, when he was 4, 20,30,50 and so on. We can also run a DNA test and determine that Barbara Bush once gave birth to this old man, so he must have been smaller at some point

The same thing goes with evolution: Fossils are like pictures frozen in time, and DNA can show how related we are to tomatoes. Or monkeys. Or fish, or anything else that lives on this planet.

Goodbye CWBookthief, friend without remand,
I was going to upvote all your comments, but you just got perm-banned.
I have no idea what your name means,
But I assume that you made it while high, at Mardi Gras, in New Orleans.
You did what we all want to do, spam the comments list,
and sadly you've been forced to cease and desist.
Perhaps in the happy hunting grounds one day we will meet,
and there under the blue skies....oops game's back on, later

President Bush Lied About Giving Up Golf: Video Proof

kronosposeidon says...

You could have saved yourself a little trouble by titling this and all other videos about the Chimperor as "Bush lied about_____________"

The man lies like we breathe. If he said the sky was blue I'd call up the folks at Wikipedia to let them know that blue no longer means this.

Of course in Iraq blue skies look more like the right side of this image, thanks to El Presidente.

Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here"

shuac says...

The song says "hell" so the video shows hell.
The song says "blue skies" so the video shows blue skies.
The song says "green fields" so the video shows green fields.

Oh my, how creative!

Views counter (Sift Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

No worries at all mate. Yeah, the Unsifted area has a queue of videos, and it would be too confusing to say "unsifted by MINK" because it would look as if you removed it from the Sifted area or something.

Let me explain how the votes-to-views ratio works. Currently the top of the default Unsifted tab is Midnight Oil Blue Sky Mine which displays 7 votes and 11 views. If you hover over the "11 views" for the post, pop-up text displays "2 unique (3.50000)". So let's break it down.

  • 7 = votes the video has received

  • 11 = total times the post has been viewed at all by anyone (except the submitter); this is for informational purposes and not used in any calculation; it may include logged-in and non-logged-in users

  • 2 = unique members who have viewed the video; this means the 11 views include a maximum of 2 logged-in users (but does not necessarily mean those 2 caused all 11 views)

  • 3.5 = votes-to-views ratio; calculated as 7 votes / 2 unique viewers = 3.5

Hopefully that makes it clearer for you and anyone else who still might be unsure how the queue works.

Utada Hikaru - Passion

GuyIncognito says...

Utada's "Beautiful World" is the theme song for the first installment of the Rebuild of EVANGELION. And if anyone was wondering, here are some translated lyrics:

As I remember it, the far far away
Future shined as far as the eye could see
Beneath the beautiful blue sky
We were just a little bit scared

This window is coloured in a nostalgic colour

If I face forward, will I see you again?
The future continues on forever
I want to see the changing of this era
Beneath a huge billboard
I want to watch time change

Towards the people, the places
I will never see again
I open this window

As I remember it, the far far away
Future shined as far as the eye could see
Beneath the beautiful blue sky
We slept forever

There was someone who I loved a long time ago
He's going to have a child in the winter
Sometimes I want to question
The things that I decided on a long time ago
I never could have forgotten them
Put your picture in your New Year's cards
I reminisce fondly about
All the things we could never do

My fears, My lies

Vahtang Kikabidze - Моя песня (USSR circa 70's)

Farhad2000 says...

This is one of my favourite songs from the Soviet film "Mimino", I would have loved to sift a trailer for you however there are no DVDs of the movies I used to watch really. He is the one who starred in the movie and also sang the songs. Prolly sifting this for myself but whatever.

Before stepping on stage this is what he says:

"Why do I sing this song? It's because I love the blue sky above Tbilisi, it's mountains, it's sun. When my soul is happy I sing it, when sad I still sing it. My song is born from this land, this sun, from my people. I sing and I feel as old age dawns, and I remember my childhood... I become very sad... but I still sing."

Kikabidze Vakhtang Konstantinovich, a professional singer, actor, screenwriter, producer, the author of many songs, was born in Georgia (Tbilisi) in 1938 on July 19th. Georgian national actor, the winner of USSR state premium, the winner of different international song concourses and film festivals. The chevalier of awards of honour of the king Vakhtang Gorgasali (of Nikolai Wondermonger and Knight Cross of St. Konstantin the Great). The honourable citizen. In 1999 in Moscow on the "Star Square" was founded his star. In cinematography he created a pleiad of eminent actors who became very popular. Here is the list of such films as: "Ne gor'ui", "Mimino", "Melodii Veriiskogo Kvartala", "Sovsem propashii" and so on. His last film "Fortuna" was made with the producer Georgi Danelia in 2000. Constantly goes on tours. As a scriptwriter and producer made two feature films: "Bud' Zdorov, dorogoi" (took the first premium on the international comedy festival in Grabovo, Bulgaria) and "Muzchini i vse ostal'nie". Married with two children and three grandchildren. Since 1996 has been brought in the international encyclopedia "Who is who".
