Moore Says Obama Remembered Solely as First Black President

Trancecoach says...

Obamacare is certainly not a "good" thing he did. It's a disaster, as is already evident to many.

As for accelerating the U.S.' insolvency, well that's both good and bad.
Alas, nothing will ever make up for his droning of innocent people, continuing most of what Bush started.

As with all Presidents, there is a devastating disappointment that they didn't do less.

While people are desperately trying to find something "good" about his presidency ("OMG! He saved GM!"), they will have to willfully overlook the fact that Obama is the most crony-friendly President in U.S. history.

I agree with Moore that Obama will be remembered as the country's first (half) black President. And with any luck, as a warning to Americans not to believe in such promises of "hope" and "change" coming from any politicians ever again... or believe anything from any politician ever.

Authorities Seize Family Home Over $40-Worth of Drugs

Trancecoach says...

Whatever. Being a statist is its own punishment. The institution of the state has too much popular support, even if the particular criminals who get "elected" sometimes lose their popularity after a few years. They get "replaced" by "new" more popular criminals and so the cycle repeats itself. Nothing will likely stop it, regardless of the nation, be it Israel, the U.S., or elsewhere... Except perhaps the economic collapse. So the good always comes with the bad and vice versa. Probably best to get out of the way as things fall apart. At least you can say there's drama constantly. Never boring.

And as someone has said about being a contrarian:
"Following the herd is a sure-fire way to mediocrity."

@newtboy writes: "well thought out complaints with follow through often DO get results, and even if they don't you'll know you tried the right thing first."

Yeah, "the right thing," eh? According to whom? You?

Even if you replace the cop (even if it happens which often doesn't), so what? Another one takes his place. It's the whole police system, these are not just "isolated" individuals who are out of control. A lot of people insist that these are just "bad apples." Then those people become victims themselves. Poetic justice.

Making cocaine in Colombia

Trancecoach says...

Yes, you're ignored, and I read your comment anyway.

No, in saying "use drugs," I was not "implying cannabis." I said "use drugs" because I meant "use drugs." Rather than trying to interpret or 'read into' what I'm saying, it might help if you responded to my post, and not what you post in your mind on my behalf.

And I will take you up on your 'challenge:' below is a list of ten "highly intelligent" people who have used cocaine (note: at no point did I say "encourages the use of cocaine." I said "use drugs" without becoming addicted, and being able to function), so that you can provide me with 10,000 more** whose lives and families have been destroyed by it. (**And note here, we're talking about individuals whose lives were destroyed by the use of cocaine itself, and not by the pointless drug laws that imprison people for having a mental or emotional condition that provokes "self-medication" as a form of treatment. Nor are we talking about the illegal status of cocaine which, itself, gives rise to violent cartels that function in the shadow of its legal status.)

So, while certainly many of the following list of "highly intelligent" (non-cognitively deficient) and successful "celebrities" may no longer be using cocaine, all of the following have used cocaine and are/were not addicted and function(ed) just fine:

Sigmund Freud
Thomas Edison
Oprah Winfrey
Stephen King
Tim Allen
Hunter S. Thompson
Angelina Jolie
Robert Louis Stevenson
Steven Tyler
Robert Downey, Jr.

There are others (like William Burroughs, Eric Clapton, Grover Cleveland, David Crosby, Arthur Conan Doyle, Isadora Duncan, Ulysses S Grant, Abbie Hoffman, Elton John, King George V, Larry Kudlow, Sir Paul McCartney, & Barack Obama), but I thought I'd stop at 10.

And if you post the 10,000 names of those whose lives and families were destroyed by cocaine (and not by the pointless drug laws or its illegal status) by the end of the week, I'll take your point.

mxxcon said:

"use drugs" and "use cocaine" are extremely different things. I'm sure in your statement you intentionally and covertly implied cannabis.
However, having said that, for every "highly intelligent" person that you'd show me who encourages the use of cocaine, I'll show you 1000 more that had their lifes and families destroyed by it. For every 1 "highly intelligent" person you show me that did not get addicted to cocaine, I'll show you 1000 more that did.

Alas, I'm ignored, so have a good cocaine-filled day, crackhead.

Glenn Beck's Argument For Marriage Equality is Best One Yet

VoodooV says...

That's interesting because the Mormon stance on homosexuality is quite opposed to it

But anyway, bam!

http://videosift.com/video/GOP-Lawmaker-Regrets-Voting-Against-Same-Sex-Marriage

and bam! (could have sworn this Rob Portman bit was on the sift, but couldn't find it)

http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/15/politics/portman-gay-marriage/

I remember these two quite vividly because both flipped because they apparently had relatives that turned out to be gay and we were making fun of the common trope of how conservatives don't change their minds until it's something that directly affects them.

and also, depending on how you look at it, Barack Obama. at the very least he was neutral on support for same sex until relatively recently.

And these are just the ones I know about because they were on the sift recently. I'm not even counting the rabid anti-gay politicians who turned out to BE homosexual. While they may not have flipped necessarily, it renders any anti-gay stance from them extremely hypocritical.

so..it's already happened...and will happen more. I'm sure a lot will probably not technically flip...they just suddenly won't pursue any anti-gay agenda anymore and try to whitewash any anti-gay statements they may have made.

Trancecoach said:

wrong. Beck is a Mormon and against government intervention in any type of social or religious contracts.

Do you have any examples of anyone who was against gay marriage who is now "flipped" and now for it? Or are you just making a prediction? If the latter, would you be willing to make a wager?

Bill Nye Pwns Astrology in 1/one minute!

ChaosEngine jokingly says...

Yes, because everyone born in the same month has the same tendencies and temperaments.

I was born in august, so I'm exactly the same as Barack Obama, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Tim Tebow, Ingrid Bergman, Halle Berry, Tony Bennett, Jack Black, Coco Chanel, and Andy Warhol.

Trancecoach said:

Too bad astrology has very little to do with constellations and more to do with tendencies and temperaments. This is why astrology is more of an oracular art than a science.

'Enders Game' Writer's Ridiculous Racist Rant Against Obama

bcglorf says...

Here is Card's preface before any of the Quotes TYT laid out:
"So as a science fiction writer and a student of history, allow me to spin a plausible scenario about how, like Augustus Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolph Hitler, and Vladimir Putin, Barack Obama could become lifetime dictator without any serious internal opposition."

It is absolutely clear that he does NOT state this is a prediction of the future he expects. Meanwhile Cenk painstakingly sets up that the quotes are Card's rallying cry against what he expects to happen in the next few years. That's lying.

Card's statements prior to that were nothing any more severe than what all manner of people decried Bush and Cheney for and worse. Plenty of people talked at length about 'what if' Bush doesn't step down, or Cheney doesn't step down. I think it horrifically unfair to now leap down Card's throat for the same.

Procrastinatron said:

I'm not defending TYT's actions here, and I don't exactly take TYT seriously. Like Chingalera said, they're tabloidistic and unprofessional.

But again, to claim that the latter part of the article was a "purely fictional account" simplifies it excessively.

What Card did in the article was essentially the same as racists tend to do when they say, "I'm not a racist, but..."

Card was essentially saying, "I'm not saying that Obama is equivalent to Stalin, but Obama is equivalent to Stalin."

Now, Card says that the events described in his thought experiment were "unlikely," but they still erred on the side of insanity, and when he puts that in an article he's going to have to expect opposition. You can't just say whatever you want and then expect it to go unopposed simply because you loosely framed it as a "silly thought experiment" beforehand.
