President Bush remarks on Obama victory

quantumushroom says...

too bad you weren't this skeptical and cynical about Bush's administration and his policies before he trashed our government, economy, environment and general standing in the world.

As a proud conservative, I consider myself more cynical and skeptical than you about government's ability to solve anything. I am equally skeptical of human nature.

My Bush disappointments are many: spending like a liberal, open borders fiasco, NCLB, taking no action against rampant fraud in both Iraq and Katrina cleanups, pushing the bailout without debate and towards the end, failing to stand up for himself or his party. Bush lacked core principles, and look what all his pandering to lefties got him: unbridled contempt.

Nevertheless, Bush got a hysterically bad rap from the main-piss-stream media, which has acted like deplorable, infantile squawking seagulls these past 8 years, criticizing the man even as he spent money like a liberal and expanded government. I'd say the lowest point for the bottom feeders was blaming Bush for Katrina while ignoring the fact New Orleans was run by corrupt taxocrats (and still is!) all the years those levees should've been fixed.

I find it hard to take you serious, it's as if you haven't been paying attention to what's happened in the last 8 years

Look what the rest of us had to deal with from the blame-America-first left. Worst Congress ever, controlled by taxocrats. Soaring gas prices and they do nothing. Non-stop negativism about Iraq, even as the good news increased exponentially. 9-11 conspiracy theories taken seriously. Lefties seem to have awfully selective hearing and vision when that irrational-beyond-measure Old Tyme Bush hatred kicks in.

But all this is going away. Soon it will be your fellow at bat. Some people have to learn things the hard way, and that time is here for you, Obama's True Believers. Grab a chair. The Jimmy Carter Remix w/ guest starring 60s radicals is about to begin!

Muslim McCain Fans Confront Intolerance At Rally

MycroftHomlz says...

real republicans get a bad rap because of their association with christian fundamentalist.

The truth is in times of prosperity there is a valid argument to be made about being fiscally conservative, and having a tempered isolationist foreign policy.

I just don't agree with the rest of their platform.

TAXES (Election Talk Post)

thinker247 says...

I think Marx gets a bad rap. He just came up with the perfect idea that can never be implemented. Too bad we're human.

I don't like the idea of someone next to me goofing off and making as much as I do, but Paris Hilton doesn't do shit and she's paid much more than any of us. Tax the fuck out of her!

I don't like the idea of CEOs earning millions off stock options and bonuses. I don't think CEOs should be allowed to own stock in their own company. It would seem like incentive to make the company better, but it's really just incentive to make the stock better. Those are two entirely different concepts. Tax the fuck out of them!

You know what? Just tax everybody but me. Then write me a check marked, "Pay to the Order of Cash." And I'll be on my way.

Joker vs Joker (Jack Nicholson vs Heath Ledger)

budzos says...

I think they both stand on their own merits. Nicholson's take goes perfectly with the baroque gothic style Burton was going for in 1989, and Ledger works great for Nolan's uber realism.

Nicholson's take is getting a bad rap. One criticism people level at Jack's performance is that his joker is "too much like Jack Nicholson", but that's why he was cast! Nobody in Hollywood's ever had a more famously threatening grin than Jack Nicholson.

As for the writing of the character, I prefer the Nolan version of the bat mythos, but he's still not making the Batman movies I'd make if a genie granted me the director's chair. I'd make it a lot more low key and make Batman far more self-reliant. Four people knew his identity by the end of Begins. Dumb. Parts of The Dark Knight belong in a Bond movie... the cellphone sonar and the airplane skyhook stunt come to mind.

I also really wish they'd just left Two-Face out of it. They totally wasted Batman's second-best enemy. Should have had the Joker scar him in this one and then maybe cap the movie with a hint that he is going to be the villain in the next one. You could still have the entire arc without making the last half-hour of the movie seem unfocused and sort of too much of a good thing.

About that baroque gothic style, I could never understand why to this day so many people in the media cite The Dark Knight Returns as the inspiration for the 1989 Batman film. Perhaps the sales numbers inspired it, but in tone and style they are as far apart as any other two interpretations of the mythos.

The Right Way to Cook Bacon

kronosposeidon says...

To me there is now wrong way to cook bacon, because I'll eat it no matter how it's cooked. Fried, baked, grilled, raw: It's all good. I think bacon's gotten a bad rap from doctors and nutritionists. I eat pounds of it every day, and I only have to get my arteries roto-rootered every three months. In your face, health nazis!

wit has its downsides. Sometimes, all too often, the devil gets a bad rap.

but thanks for considering me "smart" and expecting much from me. Personally, I prefer to expect less, that way I'm not disappointed. It's nice to meet somebody with some faith in humanity.

Oh Rotty, tsk tsk..

Explain to me how they don't deserve it. It'll take something of that measure to knock them down a peg or two. If it makes you feel better, it doesn't have to be their creepy uncles. A creepy family friend that the parents know from their college days works too

TO CATHOLICPRIEST
Excellent post.

Julian Jaynes proposed in his controversial 1977 book 'The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind' that in pre-Homeric times (before the historian Homer) people did not have the highly developed minds that we take for granted today.

What we call the 'ego' today was for these ancient people what they called a 'god'.

When danger threatened suddenly the god's voice was heard in the individual's mind. This function of the mind has since evolved and become integrated into what Jung called the 'ego'.

Science has nothing to say about the origin of consciousness, aside from Daniel Dennett's reductionist ideas which I don't accept. Religion on the other hand SHOULD have something to say about origin of spirit/consciousness but it has become so sidetracked over the millenia with social control that it has completely lost its way.

Religion in the ancient, shamanic, spiritual, natural sense would be very welcome in the world right now, and would be welcomed by every individual on this planet.

Religion gets a bad rap because it has tended over the last 3-4000 years toward social control, no matter which of the religions you choose to look at. This is why the seperation of church and state is VITAL.

If any one of us were to go back in time and go into Jesus's church, we would be going in there to LEARN, to learn about ourselves, our minds, our consciousness, our spiritual centre. When we 'graduated' we would not need to go back, and we would be informed and learned enough to teach others.

Science teaches. Religion controls.
