Rachel Maddow breaks down .. report on 'tender age' shelters

Drachen_Jager says...

Let's call them what they are.

Concentration camps.

The first stages of Ethnic Cleansing.

I'd like to point to the following article via Slate.com

"As one of the few journalists permitted to tour the government’s new internment camp, about 40 miles from the southern border, the New York Times correspondent tried to be scrupulously fair. Forcing civilians to live behind barbed wire and armed guards was surely inhumane, and there was little shelter from the blazing summer heat. But on the other hand, the barracks were “clean as a whistle.” Detainees lazed in the grass, played chess, and swam in a makeshift pool. There were even workshops for arts and crafts, where good work could earn an “extra allotment of bread.” True, there had been some clashes in the camp’s first days—and officials, the reporter noted, had not allowed him to visit the disciplinary cells. But all in all, the correspondent noted in his July 1933 article, life at Dachau, the first concentration camp in Nazi Germany, had “settled into the organized routine of any penal institution.” "

Yes... he did it. If there were any doubts left, this should remove them. Trump officially put the United States on the same path as Nazi Germany.

What are you going to do about it?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

Making a model Steel Bridge for a 3rd grade project

TheFreak says...

Opposite experience: in 4th grade me and a partner were suppose to make a model church (catholic school). I had made stained glass windows with that fake stained glass paint - arts and crafts stuff, we had made brick walls out of clay on wood...for a couple of 10 year olds it was pretty impressive. Then my partner's rather insisted we finish it at his house. His father scrapped everything we'd done and made it himself in his wood shop, letting us do nothing. Thing is, he had a wood shop but he sucked. Made it out of fake wood paneling and it didn't even make sense. It was just a crappy looking box that in no way resembled a building. I hated that thing. His need to take over stole the creativity from children.

You might think what your kid makes will be better for your help and they'll be happier because of it. But what you end up with will never be theirs. Hope you're really proud of your grade school project.

"Flash Robbery" at Wal-Mart

TheDreamingDragon says...

Oh don't hate them for their race.Hate them for their Player Class--Gangsta,where anyone who figures out how to string a dozen words together in front of a microphone feels entitled to Phat Lootz,or they blame "the Man" for their failures and consider random acts of violence and theft their Just Retribution we somehow owe them. I can appreciate Good Music of any sort, and acknowledge the Art and Craft of its creating auible sculpture with sound and voice. However,I will say I can do so without buying into a whole subculture that thinks wearing your pants half off is a fashion statement. I don't see the Enya Posse in Blue Wold on their faces and sporting designer kilts running around(although we should!). To quote a line from Animal House "Stoned Drunk and Stupid is no way to go through life, son.",and that's what the subtext of the subculture amounts to. Flashy glamour is nice, but none of it matters in the face of Real Work and the instinctual Need to get it done. This seperates the Artist from the Mob,wanting to devote time away from a constant party and to physical and emotional labour to conjure something meaningful magical and new. Stepping back to admire the fruits of your handywork is a high no mass of shiney strangers can ever hope to beat. Someone in that Flashmob has orginizational skills...300 people is quite a turn out. Wouldn't it be Nice if they had much enthusiasm for something Positive, like a neighborhood watch? twittering about crimes happening to the police can help keep their neighborhoods safe, which are crawling with drugs and shoot outs."Yo Dawg! The Bruthah from that Bodega Shooting is here on Main Street!" Maybe if the "Hood wasn't such a Scarey Place, businesses would come in. And if they didn't feel it was their right to steal, they might find good jobs from the new businesses and earn a living instead of demanding one.

But one has to have Morals for that. I see none in that video. People who don't mind rampaging in front of a sea of security cameras. Can you convince such people to Play Nice at all,or past the point when doing the right thing inconveniences you?Do people sometimes need the threat of Guns even to keep civil? Suddenly snide remarks about Evolution suddenly make SENSE. But its SOcial Evolution at play here, and at fault. WE are Rome trying to convince a native of the Province they conquered to kindly not shit in the street. Sometimes you need clubs for that. But something tells me these people need their lives managed for them. Maybe wall up a ten block radius of a poor neighborhood, move all the families out nd let them play hip Hop as a live action video game where the bullets are real and cameras everywhere record the drama Live! The ultimate Reality TV Urban Experience fully packaged and ready for heavy merchendising! They can compete for resources and earn fabulous prizes, and hopefully only shoot themslves instead of the rest of us just trying to get on with life.

I'd like to advise my fellow sifters to try to not get too emotionally heated, this is a great discussion.

I remember travelling way up North just a few years back, a little town called Pangnirtung, one of seven dry communities in Nunavut. Alcohol is not sold in town and guests and tourists are prohibited from bringing any of it into the hotel. The community took a vote not too long ago and with roughly 70% of the small community in favor, the town stayed dry. Alcoholism, ofcourse is still a problem. Suicide rates among the youth are very high, and most serious crimes that are committed are still alcohol-related.

Bootlegging presents a very worthwhile enterprise for many kids up there, it's obviously very easy to find outside the community, it's only a matter of hiding it. What's more, it's a hell of a lot easier to smuggle a mickey of rum than a six pack of beer, obviously any booze you find there is going to be the strong stuff.

Now under any normal circumstance at all I would say alcohol prohibition is a terrible idea, the same goes for the war on drugs. It's just that, Pangnirtung is so isolated and detached from the rest of mainstream Canada. So much so that it can be very hard for the local boozehounds to get their fix. If alcohol was suddenly made readily available I have no doubt in my mind that alot of kids would end up dead.

During our trip we had a chance to tour through the local elementary school and as I walked through the halls I started to look at the arts and crafts posted along the walls. Most were just typical little kid sketches or small little art projects. Then I noticed something that made my stomach churn..

One of the projects included a picture and then a list of the child's goals and his likes and dislikes. Nearly all of them mentioned alcohol and drugs in some way or another. It was kinda upsetting, alcohol shouldn't be on a list of concerns of a twelve year old.

In terms of drug regulation I really don't know, I've been on both sides of the issue and I'm still left with alot of questions, just my two cents.

The Official Roast of dotdude! (Parody Talk Post)

Arsenault185 says...

On first impression, the one thing that came into my head was refrigerator magnets. That page looks like those little words that people who pretend to have talent use. Seems fitting. Because as far as talent is concerned, I think youd better stick with an art form stick with an art form that that people will recognize. Besides, the latter of the two is right up your alley.

And if all else fails, you could always put on that "I'm Retarded" sign the government gave you to wear and try to sell your crap. People are suckers for retards and will feel bad so they will buy your arts and crafts project which are comparable to a third graders. Retarded third graders. On drugs.

Anyways. as far as that blog goes, I noticed he likes to talk about unexpected boners. I won't even code the link so you can all see it. http://randomwood.blogspot.com/ Some one help him out with that? Poor little guy probably thinks theres something wrong with it and cries when it happens. Even if he knows that its supposed to do that, it probably gets hard from rigor mortis. That is, I'm almost sure it died from lack of use.

I have to stop now. Just talking about this pathetic, talentless, good for nothing, useless, unproductive, leech on the economy is depressing me. Excuse me while I go wipe my ass with a piece of his "art". See dotdude? The Government issued sign works!

Tagging 101 (Sift Talk Post)

djsunkid says...

Oh, I just HAVE to edit those tags, but since it's being using as an example.

how about:

paul potts,nessun dorma,giacomo puccini,heartbreaking

or something...

I never put spaces before or after the commas, since you only get like 40 characters or something. Yeah, my biggest piece of advice has already been covered- don't double up words. My favourite title/tags is here:

The World's Most Giant Killer Spider!!!
tags: hairy, poisonous, running, spider
description: Run away!!!

That was my old favourite video until Cecilia Bartoli came along. Every time I loaded up my profile to see how my vids were doing (like 10 times a day or more) I would load that up in another tab because SO CUTE, and it's so cute because of the title/tags. Does it make it easier to find? Not really, but I love it. Part of the art and craft of making a good sift.
