Cyclists Tempt Darwin

ulysses1904 says...

Two things I learned living next to Amtrak rail in Mystic, CT, unless you're near a road crossing they are dead silent until they are right up on you or blasting their horn. So I learned never to walk on the tracks with your back to train traffic. Also it's easy to forget that they are a lot wider than the rails themselves. I was sitting on a rail bridge drinking a beer, heard a train coming and assumed I had plenty of clearance. I look up at the last second and realize I'm going to get killed, jumped down onto a bunch of boulders at the last second. Painful lesson that I never forgot.

TDS 9/29/11 - Wayne's World

Darkhand says...

I have to say I agree with Wayne on this.

If you asked Wayne "are you happy Obama allows guns in national parks and on Amtrak Trains?" I'm sure his reply would be

"Yes I am; but the current legislation on limiting ammo clips/magazines and banning assault rifles is just wrong. The national registry is a conspiracy to blah blah blah"

It's like finding videos of my ex-wife giving me a television for X-mas and then fast forwarding to the day we got divorced. Of course I'll look like a Moron but you missed out on all the context in between.

I'm Glad that Nixon will never call me with condolences

Is this why Biden rides the train?

EDIT: Apparently it is, but for a different reason.

"To be at home every day for his young sons,[35] Biden began the practice of commuting every day by Amtrak train for 1½ hours each way from his home in the Wilmington suburbs to Washington, D.C., which he continued to do throughout his Senate career."

It may not look it, but here is a link to a YouTube video where they clock it on radar: http://youtu.be/biCs3OM5-ns

This particular video I linked to was shot in North Kingston, RI where the Acela runs at it's max of 150mph. I posted this because I just read a news article yesterday that they were running some tests over the next few evenings at 165mph: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-09-24/news/bs-bz-amtrak-high-speed-test-20120924_1_acela-trains-acela-express-northeast-corridor

You can read more about the speed that they go through stations here: http://discuss.amtraktrains.com/index.php?/topic/32743-how-fast-are-acela-trains-allowed-to-go-when-passing-through-stations/

>> ^charliem:

There is NO way in the world they are running at full speed.....the deuce are you talking about? Unless these things are bloody slow trains, the ones in melbourne race through stations on express services faster than that, and they only have max speed of about 130kph....AND they slow down for the stations!!

Post Office refuses to deliver mail to a business

GeeSussFreeK says...

"The USPS is often mistaken for a government-owned corporation (e.g., Amtrak), but as noted above is legally defined as an "independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States," (39 U.S.C. § 201) as it is wholly owned by the government and controlled by the Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General. As a quasi-governmental agency, it has many special privileges, including sovereign immunity, eminent domain powers, powers to negotiate postal treaties with foreign nations, and an exclusive legal right to deliver first-class and third-class mail. "

-Wiki

No doubt there are loans from the fed and stuff going on to support this "non-tax" dollar muti-billion dollar losses quarter after quarter.

Ask yourself this question...who are the share holds of USPS? Who are reaping the profits or feeling the losses? The people at the top are mostly government officials. No doubt the trail of money leads back to the government somewhere. I am going to use my google powers to find out more.

Unruly Republicans Disrupt Health Care Debate

Putting aside the illegality and intrusiveness of this socialized medicine bill, do you believe the government of FEMA, the post office, Amtrak and GM--the same government which couldn't meet its own quota of H1N1 flu shots--can efficiently and more cheaply run 1/6th of the economy better than private companies?

Given that every other public healthcare plan in the world is run at a fraction of the cost per individual and actually results in people getting healthcare when they need it rather than insurance companies cutting ties with customers right when they are supposed to step up to the plate, I would say yes, they can run it more efficiently.

You guys are statists. You believe the State should control health care and rule those evil corporations with an iron fist. I don't.

Do you really think Pelosi will make good on her threats in this monstrosity of a bill and throw people in jail for not buying health insurance?
