I'm Smart

Reducing their time for every interruption would be better than cutting the mic. As if Trump wouldn't just shout nonsense without amplification or walk over and start yelling into Biden's mic.

Putin's puppy gotta keep on yappin'.

The song of the dunes

shagen454 says...

Love me some sand dunes. I've heard low droning sounds while out in Guadalupe sand dunes in central california and in Death Valley. I remember researching why and there were some theories - something about grain size (changes pitch), friction & amplification from a layer of moisture below the surface and sand collision upon the surface creating vibrations that in turn create a feedback loop of low frequency. Stony stuff, lol!

Four hikers and a suspension bridge...

newtboy says...

It seemed like they were all marching in step. I wonder if they just happened to march in the same frequency that the bridge naturally resonates in, causing a feedback/amplification that over stressed the cable, or if it was simple cable failure for other reasons.
Either way, I'm glad no one was hurt (according to the TV piece I saw about this). It could have been far worse.

Chicken Itza Genius Sound Engineering

newtboy says...

Why would you say it's co-incidence?
The area was designed as a giant, open air amphitheater. It's not co-incidence that they built it that way. It was necessary because they didn't have amplification back then, and for the priest/speaker to be heard, it had to be built acoustically near perfect. I think you get the same thing if you clap in a Greek amphitheater.
(But perhaps you just mean the bird sound and the (mispronounced) name being co-incidence? If so, nevermind!)

Yup, it's a lucky co-incidence. That's what you get when you place lots of vertical planes in that arrangement, ie steps..

San Diego PD harassing Acoustic Musician

chingalera says...

A quick looky at the San Diego Municipal Code concerning Noise Abatement and Control....Reminding all, that these and ALL enforcement of statutes is left to the discretion of individual patrol cops (not the brightest bulbs in the fixture)
"Loud or raucous yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing on the public streets between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., or at any time or place, is hereby prohibited."

Since these guys were not using any amplification, they did not fall into that category of noise-If they were doing it after the hours posted that would be an issue, IF they were violating a noise ordinance.

Whats truly fucked is that if in fact these guys were NOT breaking any laws, then arguing with a fucking idiot dressed as a cop would be the offense warranting arrest, and it looks as if this particular fuzz is trying to coerce the guy into an arrest.

This cops a fucking tool. He should trade in his badge for a job with a collection agency or as a private valet for another prick like him.

Voodoo Chile by Hendrix - Live

MilkmanDan says...

I was curious about this question also. The strings are intriguing to me because wikipedia says the instrument traditionally uses silk strings, but they look like catgut and sound like nylon to me. My best guess is that they are actually nylon, so the pickups would have to be piezo/microphone type things instead of magnetic pickups like for an electric guitar.

A piezoelectric pickup (one of a few options for acoustic guitar amplification) just looks like a small disc, so that could be tucked away someplace not highly visible on her instrument which would explain why we can't readily see it. So, that's my best guess but I could easily be wrong.

Just curious. On a technical note, where is the electrical pickup on this instrument? I see that there is a patch cord plugged in to the side but don't see a visible pick up. Forgive my ignorance on the gayageum.

Not a laser.
No radiated emissions are being stimulated to cause amplification here, it is simply a focusing lense.

Questioning Evolution: Irreducible complexity

shinyblurry says...

It's still all about the missing link, which has never been found. You have a lot of theory and speculation, but you would be surprised how much science takes on faith about evolution, and these discoveries. Entire societies have been fabricated from the find of a single tooth! Or an armbone..but there is no real proof, which is why science still desperately searches for the missing link that they'll never find.

I'll get back to you on the information question because I need to read through the articles..but even if there was some process for it, how do you get from inanimate material to life? Here's a quote:

Professor Edwin Conklin observed, "The probability of life originating from accident is comparable to the probability of the Unabridged Dictionary resulting from an explosion in a printing shop." or

Sir Fred Hoyle, of Cambridge University stated that statistically the chances of one cell evolving was the same as a tornado passing through a junkyard and giving you a fully functional Boeing 747

it's just taken on faith that it happened, of course..but there isn't even a good theory for it. pea soup getting electrocuted a cell does not create. its just not plausible.

BP Refuses To Let Journalists Film Coastline

malakai says...

I agree with dannym3141.

Looking at the video, the journalists were in a boat. The "older" footage was taken from a helicopter. Makes sense to stop the mode of transportation that could cause an amplification of the issue from entering the affected area.

And anyway, nothing like this has happened before (in terms of scale and location of the oil leak) and as such no-one knows what to do to fix the spill. A massive company like BP will never ever get things done within 24 hours, there's just too much bureaucracy involved. It'll take weeks for them to find a viable solution in a lab that will scale up and to then roll it out.
