Faces Of Death

MrFisk says...

"Faces of Death" is certainly not a snuff film according to the relatively strict official AFU definition. It purports to be a compilation of footage of death, collected by somebody named Doctor Gross [sheesh] as a result of his researches into the nature of death. There are only three sequences in the entire 100 minutes that depict probably genuine deaths. One is news footage of what appears to be a political assassination at a French news conference, the second is a skydiver falling to his death at an airshow, and the third is a botched movie stunt. The famous alligator and bear attack scenes are staged, and neither scene actually shows the victim being chomped or mauled. The monkey brain dinner scene also is unconvincing."

Okay, now let's target the three deaths that should sway the jury yay or nay:
1. "One is news footage of what appears to be a political assassination at a French news conference,"
This is news worthy and would make it onto the sift, presumably, posted by krono with an explanation of why this is news and not snuff.
2."the second is a skydiver falling to his death at an airshow,"
I would argue this as being a tragic news event, also.
3."and the third is a botched movie stunt,"
This is the most questionable of the three, in my opinion, and I would still say this would fall into a fail, tragic, wtf, news event.

Sknyliv airshow disaster Anniversary

>> ^BreaksTheEarth:
This video features similar content in an exploitative way:
http://www.videosift.com/video/Faces-Of-Death ..skip to 1:36:24 where victims of a 727 jet crash are shown.
If that video is acceptable, I make the case that this one is as well. Perhaps even more so due to the newsworthiness of the event.

That is absolutely snuff. The entire "Faces of Death" series explicitly promotes the entertainment and shock value of death and suffering. That is their sole purpose, to sell films depicting actual deaths. Snuff. That video should be removed without question.

Sknyliv airshow disaster Anniversary

inflatablevagina says...

Before this comment I have quoted, I was on the fence if this was snuff or not. After that it makes me believe that this does, in fact, violate the guidelines. If I were new to the sift I wouldn't have necessarily considered to be snuff because of the wording "for entertainment". It is documenting an event. I don't know.... maybe I still AM on the fence.
I do know I didn't watch the whole thing and I never want to see it again.

>> ^Arsenault185:
"Please do not post pornography or "snuff" films (which we define as the explicit depiction of loss of human life displayed for entertainment).
Note: The presence of human fatality is acceptable and not considered "snuff" if presented as a limited portion of a lengthy educational, informative news report or documentary. Our definition of "snuff" does include but is not exclusive to any short clip in which a human fatality occurs whether or not any victims are actually visible on camera."

By the FAQ this is snuff. 8 Minutes is hardly a documentary.

Plane Crash at German Airshow

artician says...

I appreciated the slide-show after the video of the wreckage. Crazy everyone walked away.

I have pilots in my family, so I've been to my share of airshows: The downward spin (sorry, don't know the name) was an intentional stunt. The second poster is correct, his engine definitely cuts out 2/3rds of the way down. He was able to restart it but not in time (though that's probably what saved lives there).

Monster Truck Does Quite Impressive Backflip

Numinar says...

Memorare= have you tried airshows? drag racing? Strip Clubs? DRUGS? These people you loathe are freaking awesome at their taste in entertainment! You need to be if you live in a trailer!

I for one love monster trucks and will now play Motorstorm to compensate the fact I have none.

Harrier Aircraft Carrier Landing

csnel3 says...

I went to the airshow in Hillsboro, OR. a few years back, They had a Harrier fly by and hover.
It couldn't verticly land at that airport because it would melt the runway.
The air show is in the hot months and the asphalt is already hot and soft.

Anyway.. The Harrier hovered above us and slowly turned, I coud see its guns, and it was one of the most awesome, scarey , OMFG moments of my life. It was menacing and dangerous.
If I was an unarmed peasant or unprepared enemy, I would have shit a brick.
If I was armed I would have shot that pilot right in his smug face.

Russian 5th generation fighter

StukaFox says...

We'll know it's combat ready when it's punched a crater into the runway at the Paris Airshow.

Also, I hope it does better than its hanger-queen predecessor, the Mig-29 -- one hour of flight for 10 hours of hanger time.

American tank crushes Iraqi cab

MarineGunrock says...

Hear, hear, Gundamn.

Besides, every tank has a commander - a commissioned officer senior NCO. Any shit that is illegal or wrong, especially if it's being videotaped - will ultimately fall upon his shoulders. So had this been a no-no, surely the Cpl/Sgt would have put a stop to it.

I'm not saying that this couldn't have been illegal, but like Gundam said, for all we know the tank crew all chipped in and bought the car for some fun stress reliever. Don't sit there and tell me that if you went to an airshow or something and they did this there that you wouldn't be giddy if you saw a tank run over a car in real life.
