dr peterson is a professor of psychology at university of toronto, and former harvard professor.

i like him but often disagree with some of his criticisms, but he does source all his claims on his website and his books.

though his book "maps of meaning" is a bit of a slog.

one thing i admire about peterson is his careful use of words, which is where the interviewer was getting tripped up.

she was not really listening, and was instead reacting based on assumptions, rather than his actual words.which is why she kept with the "so what you're saying.."

the extreme left has labeled peterson an "alt-right" demagogue and a "transphobe" but both of these allegations are patently ridiculous with even a tertiary examination of what peterson is saying.

you don't have to agree with him,but as this interviewer found out, presume at your own risk.

he will may you pay for your presumptions and arrogance.

i find both dr peterson and dr haidt invaluable in understanding the psychology of human societies.peterson is an evolutionary psychologist while haidt focuses on moral psychology.

but what do i know..i am just a ghetto white trash kid from the burbs.
still interesting.

Keanu Reeves Tactical 3 gun shooting

@ChaosEngine

I forgot to acknowledge your comments about judging people by their looks.

I didn't mean to say that these women are dumb or unqualified. I have no idea.

I know really good looking people who struggle because they are typecast a certain way or are treated differently in uncomfortable ways because of their beauty.

It can warp you, extreme beauty, the way you can be dismissed as facade only, or lionized when you haven't actually done anything.

I really admire people who find a way to navigate their looks and are able to come fully into themselves.

That is a true statement for any challenge in life -- beauty, ugliness, shortness, alopecia, baldness, dwarfism. I'm looking at you, Peter Dinklage. You are a rock star.

It defies logic to think that this group of women is just a random sample. I didn't need to do any research to know this company ignores competent, talented women with gun skills and normal looks for women who are glossy. Are the beautiful women also talented with gun skills? Doesn't matter. Because I am already creeped out.

Creeped out isn't the best word. I am really enjoying saying it though. Gitaigo: Onomatopoeia that describes states of being, not sounds

I won't remember it, but what a great word.

"It doesn't matter if it's good, as long as it makes money."

Asmo says...

Depends how you define failure? If it makes a bunch of money but is shit, it's successful to the suits but a failure to the fans.

CoD games are a great example of this.

If it's critically hailed by fans but doesn't squirt out the bucks (Firefly/Serenity, Babylon 5 etc), it doesn't matter how well it's received by the fans because it may not ever continue as a franchise.

More to the point, if you subjectively enjoy a piece of shit, are you wrong? Because TLJ, imo, is a turd. You seemed to enjoy it. Who is right? Both? Neither? Does it matter?

In the end, what we see on screen is a factor of studios looking for stuff that will make a fortune, not what is going to make a great film in terms of artistic merit. If they cared about artistic merit, there are dozens of fantastic stories in the SW extended universe novels that could have been picked as starting points for 7/8/9. The stories of Grand Admiral Thrawn or Rogue Squadron for example.

A shit aggregated score will not prevent Ep 9 from coming out so why does it matter? Hopefully it might spur the writers on to actually putting together a story that isn't the equivalent of the OJ chase in space, but I'm not holding my breath.

Republican Tax Scam Is Handwritten Nonsense

ChaosEngine says...

So if a Republican is accused of sexual predation, they are innocent until proven guilty, but if a democrat or liberal is accused of the same thing, they should hung out to dry?

Even for you, bob, that doesn't make much sense.

The difference is that when a liberal is accused of these things, other liberals don't accuse their victims of being liars. Other liberals are sad that someone they once admired has fallen so low.

But we don't defend them and we certainly don't advocate them running for office.

Roy Moore?? We will see when his accusers have their day in court. Till then Roy is innocent.
Your side (Dems) are not so fortunate. The Democrat / Liberal list grows by the day. The party of debauchery.

Flat Earther To Launch Himself In Homemade Rocket

HenningKO says...

Man... not me!
Go for homemade rocketry! And if this guy is a fireball or a smear on the desert in a week... still go. Risk-taking and a spirit of adventure IS something that used to make America great.
Don't get me wrong... his motive is silly. But I admire the will.

ChaosEngine said:

Eh, proving things for yourself can only be taken so far, and I feel that when your experiment includes the words “homemade manned rocket”, you have crossed the line.

CarMax's answer to the guy's ad for his fiancé's used Honda

Jinx says...

While it was certainly an admirable attempt at humour we all think that playing fast and loose with the truth, even by omission, is too great a price to pay for cheap laughs. Please be more responsible in the future.

I know. I deliberately ignored that because the joke is a lot less funny if it goes "I sold your car and the cat is fine".

ABC News: Purity Balls: Lifting the Veil on Special Ceremony

Sagemind says...

Admirable but terrible.
Completely setting these girls up for failure in life.

Hahahahahahah _ He was "Compromised"
So he better make sure everyone else hates themselves as well.

The Purity Ball, is creepy as hell. If a girl needs a male touch, it better NOT be from her father!!

OMG - I have so much to say here.
I find so much of this disturbing.

What gives the dad the right to tell her who is good enough. Talk about absolute control issues. Teaching these girls right from day one, that it'a the MAN who makes all the decisions - That the girl is not capable to make her own choices.

YouTube's Rules Don't Apply to Everyone

ChaosEngine says...

Youtube are consistently inconsistent. As much as I admire some youtubers and think making short films would be a great way to make a living, I am so glad my income is not dependent on the increasingly arbitrary whims of google.

For example, Brady Haran of Numberphile made a video about "derangements", a concept in combinatorial mathematics. Fairly dry stuff unless you're a math geek. YouTube flagged the video and even when he submitted it for "manual review" it was still deemed inappropriate for advertisers.....

although the problem has apparently since been resolved. Nothing to do with Brady also having an immensely popular podcast where he complained about it, I'm sure. (For the record, Hello Internet is awesome!)

@RFlagg i tend to agree with both you and eric, but at the same time it is this mans perspective that drew me to his movie reviews.

i find it interesting how we,as humans, have the ability to project our own sensibilities onto things we admire.

you should check out his channel, and his series "logos made flesh",to see his take on our favorite films.

Zombie Octopus Hates Soy Sauce

SDGundamX says...

Living in Japan, I get to eat octopus pretty frequently and I'm always so conflicted about it. On the one hand, I really admire them as they're such smart creatures. On the other hand, they are damned tasty when prepared right (great takoyaki, for instance).

Still, there is no way I would eat this. I prefer my food 100% dead. I had the same problem at a sushi place once where they took the fish out of the tank and sliced it up right in front of us. The fish slices were still wiggling ever so slightly when the chef handed them to us. I couldn't eat it and my friend wound up eating my share.

Thanks for the quality.

I had a different reaction.

The NATO guy first response was to smile. I admire someone who instinctive reaction is to be kind.

That ain't me. So I admire it in others.
