Venom Trailer 2

Sagemind says...

This is not the Spider Man Arc. This is the Lethal Protector Arc.
They even had a complete action figure line of the main 5 symbiotes in the early 90s.

"Venom is loosely adapting the Lethal Protector comic arc, which saw Eddie Brock and Venom going up against the sinister Life Foundation and their hideous experimentations. The results of that were the Five Symbiotes: Riot, Scream, Agony, Lasher and Phage. Developed from "seeds" collected from the parent Venom symbiote, each had their own distinct powers"

Watching A Horror Film As A Young Boy

artician says...

So many references in here. I usually hate that kind of pandering, but still needed to point out:
David statue on coffee table (reference to Goonies?)
NES and Intellivision (c'mon, no one kept the latter around after '84).
R2D2 on coffee table
Stupid, obvious pro-wrestler action figure is stupid (ooooh yeah!)
TMNT comic is possibly anachronistic

This video is so pandering and silly, but the song is damn complex. Childs first feelings of love and sexuality combined with the witnessing of violence and murder. Now that I type that, it probably defines far more modern experiences than I realize.

Unfortunately, we'll have to start buying a lot more lunchboxes and action figures to get them to consider us. Maybe Samsung, Apple and company can start releasing Star Wars branded electronic gadgets.

"The Sucklord" by Joey Garfield

Sagemind says...

I used to be part of a group way back on the newsgroups before we had internet chat rooms. A group dedicated to Action Figures (Rec.Toys. Action Figures). We called it RTAF. One member eventualy created a website and databased us all on a site called T.O.R.C.H. - The Official R.T.A-F Collector's Haven!
This guy is just like several of the guys I got to know on the Newsgroup forum.
Guys with a Punk Attitude that did what they wanted, and bought, collected and customized figures.
Good times were had....

spawn-the return of nyx-shortfilm

poolcleaner says...

Is this part of a series of fan shorts? I love how they depict Spawn. Chilling and truly demonic. I do, however, wish there was more solidity, like a feeling of more weight, once Spawn solidified from his demon essence.

I spent some time pouring over a couple trades when I was a kid, but never really got into him. Art style is mesmerizing for sure. But... all of my friends who were REALLY into Spawn (like really) into Spawn when the comics first started making the buzz -- all of these super Spawn fans were also really into Insane Clown Posse. So... they had the Violator action figures, you know the demonic clown villain.

I just didn't get why they identified with that guy. They secretly wanted Spawn to fail? Laughing inside about that poor soul never seeing his wife again...

Bill Burr Weighs In On Gay Marriage

I doubt there is a single thing left that can be considered going too far -- other than going too far and inciting a riot or having people kill for you with jokes that control people's minds. Or just a simple, classic killing joke. Yes, when the listener hears the punch line, they die because they're a faggot. Oh, I forgot to tell you the joke only kills faggots and has a side effect of transforming a foetus into a raving mentally challenged serial killer that kills other babies and wears baby faces. Hmm... I'm thinking 3d printable action figures.

Robin Williams: Mind Altering Experience

Sagemind says...

I met Robin, several years back while they he was filming Jumanchi.
He was filming in my neighborhood, all filmed a block from my house.

But I met him in line a my local comic shop. He was there buying some action figures. He told me about how he tried to come into the store the day before but was mobbed in the street. He'd been looking for these specific action figures for a while and had tracked them down and had them on hold. (Wild Cats from McFarlane toys)

I was standing beside him for a bit before I even knew who he was. I remember thinking he was shorter than I'd expected. He was nice, collected and smiled as we chatted in the line to pay for our stuff. I didn't overwhelm him with questions or treat him like a celebrity. Just chatted in line like I would with anyone else.

He finished paying for his purchases and left the store. He was immediately met by body guards. who took his purchases and quickly disappeared (out of the way) as he walked up the street with his Publicist.

It was just a casual meeting. but somehow I always wanted to meet him again, so I could say, remember when we met in the comic store. I supose that will never happen now, though, it may never have happened any way.

Sorry to see such a genius mind leave us. I hope he's found his peace.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Native Advertising

Stormsinger says...

I love it when people claim that content providers just refuse to find new ways to get paid...out of sheer laziness. While apparently not having any suggestions as to how to do so themselves.

Virtually the entire internet is nothing -but- experiments in alternative means of monetization. The fact is that there really aren't many options. You can sell access directly (via subscriptions, micro-transactions or some such), or you can sell advertising. Neither of which appear to be sustainable strategies; as soon as the content is made available to a few (or before), it'll be stolen and distributed for free, and advertising has been getting less and less profitable for a decade (since about the time the market got saturated, and there were no newbies left to click on the ads).

You really can't sell "support" contracts to content. I suppose you could sell crappy merchandise, like action figures and plushies, but that's wanting content creators to do something other than creating content to be able to pay the bills. Not a good trade-off, IMO.

Note, I don't have any answer either, but I'm not about to lay "a large part of the problem" on the content creators. They have -every- incentive to solve the problem...unlike the consumers, who have plenty of incentives to -be- the problem.

Skateboarding Cat

poolcleaner says...

I don't recall the moment in Videosift history that you're referencing.

You could probably write a Videosift web crawler that determines the moment that cat videos and boobs became popular, but I think it will likely determine that they have always been popular.

10 votes to determine quality control is too small of a value, UNLESS downvoting were used less sparingly.

But no one really downvotes as a form gating, they mainly downvote as an extreme action towards something they strongly disagree with. For example, ant downvoting things that are verbally vulgar. Well, what if you and everyone who felt that cat videos and boobs were poor quality, what if you guys downvoted as a rule to maintain quality control?

If you guys did that, you'd see something closer to the utopia of quality you think somehow magically occurs. It would then follow that, if sifters followed this method for maintaining quality, the Sift would have higher standards for Top 15.

Unless that is already happening, and people of value (to be defined) actually believe this is a video that is worthy. Clearly, by the rules and inputs available, even you agree that this video is worthy. Otherwise there would be AT LEAST one downvote.

You complained but failed a call to action. Figured I'd help you better understand how democratic systems work, and how lack of appropriate participation degrades quality of that democratic system over time, as potential voters cease to vote as needed to maintain quality.

Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys (Teaser)

I had the giant Darth Vader helmet that held maybe 40 Star Wars action figure. It sat on my shelf next to the Millenium Falcon.

Now, I just think of all that excessive plastic.

What if Star Wars Episode II Were Good? (Belated Media)

Deano says...

The problem with the new films was besides being poorly scripted and made they lost sight of who their core audience was. Essentially it was young children, teens and their families.

They made something that was the inverse of what made the originals great fun. Taxes? Politics? The Senate? And they still wanted to flog all of that as action figures?

People can try kidding themselves all they want about how good something is just because they want it to be so. But really as a fan of anything you have to learn to draw a line and accept when something falls off in quality.

It does happen with many shows and films. Even this re-scripting isn't immune to this. You can rearrange a turd all you like but you still end up with a mess.

Nice drawings though.
