Apple Iphone v4 release demo doesn't work out for Jobs

cybrbeast says...

I don't get it, if all those computers in the room managed to connect to wifi, then why didn't the new iPhone do it? Or does this mean you won't be able to use iPhone wifi at any place where a lot of techies come together?

iPhone 4 Demo Fail

EMPIRE says...

So... if I'm in an area heavily populated with Wifi connections, I have to get up on a stage and ask everyone to turn their wifi connections off?

Good going Stevie boy.

oooooh look! It's a phone that can make videocalls!! How new and fresh, and never before seen. Let's all cheer and applaud...

apple fanboys are getting stupider with every new launch.

Don't miss the Iphone 5 presentation, where Steve Jobs will present a brand new and amazing feature... being able to make a call.

Any Sifters bought an iPad? (Blog Entry by dag)

volumptuous says...

You people are fucking idiots.

Who gives one shit what kind of a computer someone else uses? Do you also care that I'm wearing OsPop shoes? REI socks? a SanDisk SD card? Drinking a mexican coca-cola out of a hand blown glass? I love how I innocently buy a product, and now I'm some sort of delusional fan, who was tricked into buying expensive nonsense by clever advertising.

Did you ever think that maybe I would personally find it useful to me? Oh no, that would only be fucking logical, so there MUST be something more sinister here!!

And this straw man "fanboy" talk is as retarded as it is childish. It's like saying I'm a Gloucester fanboy because I like the way their cheese tastes more than other cheeses.

I have an iPad and I love it.

Wanna know why? Because of stuff like TouchOSC:
http://hexler.net/software/touchosc

And AC-7 Pro:
http://www.saitarasoftware.com/Site/Home.html

And iTap VNC client:
http://www.jokeandbiagio.com/ipad-for-film-and-tv-production-final-cut-pro-screen-sharing

And iElectribe:
http://www.korg.com/iElectribe

And Air Display for FCP:
http://www.canonfilmmakers.com/2010/05/ipad-controls-final-cut-pro-audio.html

Yeah. Open-source, using Open Sound Control messaging, wifi to my desktop, use it in Logic Studio, Final Cut, Max, Reaktor and pretty much whatever else I want. But I guess I'm a "fanboy" because of my increased functionality in my production studio?

Really? Seriously? I should just not have better functionality to soothe the poor babies fee-fee's out there who want to claim that we're all just delusional?

And yes, there's lots of rabid Apple fans, and I don't get the whole sticker-on-the-car thing. But then again, I don't wear logos of any kind. But it seems to me that for every rabid Apple fan, there's 100 internet idiots who froth at the mouth with seething hatred every time Apple makes a new product.

blaaargh!

I've sniffed on open wireless connections before. I've never done anything with information that's been revealed that way, but I've still looked out of curiosity. Except for this one situation...
This was this crazy girl who got hold of my friend's email account and proceeded to sabotage everything she could; everything from myspace to attempting to access her bank account. Crazy girl's father has ties with local politicians so the police wouldn't act. Once I was certain of crazy girl's identity I parked down the street from her house and harvested as much information and evidence as I could. After that I made sure she knew that someone else was playing her game and they were much better at it. She stopped all her shit after that.
It turned out she was harassing several girls, all of whom had dated her boyfriend at some point in the past.
Anyway, my point was that all the shit he talks about, while not really common, is not as uncommon as most people assume. Where I live, I'd say open wifi is probably not going to cause you any problems. If you're in a city, open wifi is a huge risk.

I mean what a fucking dick making out stuff is dangerous , not letting the other woman speak , and not actually being realistic or clear.
What a fucking nob
Its not to hard to emgin that a noob who is used to using a laptop in Coffey shops or free open wifi that is 100% legit did not reolise the difference between that and using a open wifi at home.
Also he totally exaggerates the risks.

I know most the risks and the reality of stuff happening I have done alot of network security and almost started a bissiness bassed around securing wifi,

The person at more risk is the guy with the open wifi and Evan then its not HUGE . sum one at random steeling internet from an open wifi is at minimal risk. the same sort of risk level as people who don't use a fire wall or old copies of windows. probably far less risk than sum one that downloads of dodgy sites , maby evan less risk than sum-one that downloaded pirate stuff regulary.

The issue i have is that leo's tone of voice and the way he interrupts what she is saying rather than just been clear and going over the facts.

for example using a pc without a fire wall is not advisable and opens you up to possable atack and varouse negative things.

but its not the case that if u don't have a fire wall your pc will catch on fire and you credit information will be stolen immediately.

Its just about been balanced and clearly explaing things.

think of it this way... open wireless access is akin to letting random people borrow your car.

you don't know what they're going to use it for. they could be robbing a bank, carting dead hookers to the field, drug deals, going through your stuff, whatever... you're basically trusting that the people that use the car are going to do so for good purposes. picking up their kids from school, grocery shopping, running a quick errand, etc.
wifi is kind of the same in the fact that people could be using it to steal movies/music, access nefarious pictures/information, e-stalking, hacking into email/banking accounts, or they could be using it for banking, amazon, videosift, wikipedia... who knows. sure there's logs, but if you know how to access the logs, then you know how to protect yourself and probably aren't concerned with this anyway.

the point is you never know who could be doing what on your open, unprotected access point. if you're willing to fend off the MPAA/RIAA, CEOP, or even perhaps the local police/FBI then by all means, leave your access point wide open. WARdrivers will document your WAP and pirates/hackers/child-exploiters will love you for it.

read the instruction booklet that came with your router. 99% of the time the very first set of instructions after setting the thing up is how to change your admin password and enable encryption. Those instructions are there for a good reason.

How to hack into a WEP wireless network

xxovercastxx says...

I love that it boots to the command line and the first thing they do is... start X and open a terminal!

In addition to what demon suggests, I suggest using a key generator to produce a real jumble of a wifi key for you. I use the full 63 characters; it's not like you have to type it in.

I save it in a text file on my server. If someone comes over and wants to use my wifi, I plug them in first and copy and paste the key on their laptop. Sure someone could steal the key if they got access to my network somehow, but my wifi key is the least of my concerns if that happens. This attitude may not be healthy for all networks, but it's fine for my house.

Backtrack has been around for a while. Cute way of hacking a wifi network, but in reality, who's gonna have the DVD burned and ready to use when they lose their internet connection?

Anyway, if you value your computer and files, use WPA2 with a long, complex password

People who Appreciate a Good User Experience Will Like the iPad (Blog Entry by dag)

RedSky says...

They won't miss these added features because those primarily exposed to Apple's mass marketed products won't expect them by default. If Apple can define tablet PC to lack or not require GPS, a camera, possibly even Flash then that will define their expectations. I'm sure more are and will remain oblivious to the likes of the Archos 5G/9 which is superior to the iPad and does everything it should:

Archos 9 - $600
1.76 lbs.
1.1Ghz ATOM Z510. Runs Windows 7.
8.9", 1024 x 600 pixels resistive, LED backlight.
10.08" x 5.28" x 0.67" thick
7.4v Lithium-Polymer battery, 5 hours, removeable. 36W (12v @ 3a) power adapter.
HDD 60GB (1.8")
WiFi (802,11b/g), Bluetooth 2.0 (EDR)
Microphone.
Stereo Speakers.
Headphone jack.
1.3mp Webcam,
Optical trackpoint mouse,L/R mouse buttons.
Built-in Stand, 2-positions.
USB port.
Lotus Symphony included: Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations.

iPad - Starting at $500, but $700 for that amount of hard drive space.
1.5 lbs.
1Ghz A4. Runs iPad OS 3.2.
9.7", 1024 x 768 pixels, capacitive, LED backlight, IPS, Oleophobic
9.56" x 7.47" x 0.5" thick.
25Whr Lithium-Polymer battery, 10 hours, fixed. 10W (5v @ 2a) power adapter.
16GB, 32GB, or 64GB flash memory.
WiFi (802,11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR)
Microphone.
Speakers: Mono Audio.
Headphone jack.
iPad versions of iLife apps: $9.99 each (x 3).

Also I think the user utility associated with Apple's products is exaggerated. It's simplicity that they do well, and again the kind of people who are not aware of the customization they might appreciate, are missing out on and might benefit from are the same people that laud it. That and the fact that user utility feels like it's too often conflated with style. The scroll wheel on the iPod sure was a fancy marketing gimmick but having used a 5G iPod now for over a year, I would gladly get tactile controls back. There's simply no comparison, and really the only thing I can assume is Apple users who claim it's efficient have no frame of reference. The same can be said with OS X, sure it's full of stylish transitions, animations and some good features, but I'd wager especially with how familiar everyone is with Windows, it's no more of an efficient work tool. I see Jobs made a big deal about pointing out that the iPad will have a similar user interface to the iPhone. I think that drives home the point that there's nothing that immensely intuitive about Apple devices. They still must be learnt. People are simply more willing to invest time into learning to how to use an interface of a device that is more popular and they predict will be around for a longer time.

Coming back to the iPad, I still think even the average consumer is going to be pissed off by the lack of some features. It's pretty clear that they didn't just want to make a portable internet device that surpasses the iPhone in usability, they wanted to make something that clearly doesn't eat into the market share of their budget MacBook and MacBook Air. They could have loaded a desktop OS on it, but they purposely didn't. I think many will struggle with the idea that an internet device like this can't do Flash, doesn't have a USB port and can't run their favourite PC/Mac programs.

That may be it's downfall or marketing, and simplicity as you mentioned may win out. If Apple says 'revolutionary' enough, maybe they won't realise this device is bested by something that came out in October 2009.

I Love My Internet Radio (Blog Entry by dag)

maatc says...

I also have one of these radios and love it, too!

I tune in to ABCs TripleJ from Sydney a lot. We also play the german kids radio KIRAKA when the little one is around, something we can´t get on the regular radio. And last summer we had fun listening to Jamaican Reaggae Channels while hanging out on the balcony in the summer heat. So much good stuff out there!

Our model is a DNT Ipdio which can also stream audio from your computer through WIFI. The user interface is quite annoying though, there are probably much better options out there.

Hong Kong - Stacked like lab animals!
