Here's an update. We're a twin engine plane running on a single engine. One of our two web servers is down at the moment, so we are half speed. Lucky may have located the problem though and we hope to have both engines running before peak time tomorrow - (or else this plane will crash spectacularly)

Is this plane Oceanic 815? Are we going to crash onto an uncharted island? Is SiftBot the black smoke?

Zero Punctuation: The Second Annual E3 Hype Massacre

Shepppard says...

Ehh.. I find myself again disagreeing with the "Review" this week on some points.

Assassins Creed 2 looks pretty damn good to me, Supposed to be bigger then the first game, new executions, able to assassinate two people at once now and Leo Da Vinci inventing things for you.

Saboteur wasn't mentioned, but it wasn't exactly unveiled at this E3, GTA style game based in france during WWII, able to climb buildings, and the art style seems interesting to me.

Mass Effect 2 in production, using the data from your first game to bring the second game to life, if you killed certain characters off in the first they won't appear in the second, new weapons, ect.

I've been playing the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta, and nobody talks..character wise anyway, and the gameplay is pretty good.

His Beatles rock band point is that it's just a stupid name..

Final Fantasy XIV has next to no info on it yet, except that it's going to be online, So I don't understand why he's critiquing it already, other then the fact that the generally hates Mmorpgs. (Side note, I'm excited to see what they're going to be doing, it's FF11's spiritual predecessor, and FF11 was fantastic until WoW came out and showed that the slow paced combat was outdated.)

Halo Reach seems like it could be very interesting, because it's potentially the first time that you DON'T play as a lone spartan if the game is going to be based off the books, and the planet itself is supposed to be mostly open fields and forest.. again if it's based off the books.

And ODST seems like it'll be great, you're not on a linear storyline and you're able to explore all of New Mombasa, they've pushed the halo 3 engine more then they knew they could and have fantastic looking results, not to mention new features since you're no longer a super-soldier, so you don't have a feeling of complete comfort when you're going through the game because they've essentially reverted back to the halo 1 system of minor "Shields" (Basically called Stamina in ODST) after which your health takes damage.

I dunno, to me this years E3 was actually pretty good, it's talking about titles that don't seem like they're bound to fail from the get-go (lookin at you, Destroy All Humans 3 & Damnation)

Babylon 5 - An Apology

14427 says...

Drax! Thank God someone else gets it! That show really was the best! There's a whole series of novels, including what the fifth season was supposed to be. Frigging heart wrenching. Okay, Notarobot. You know how on Star Trek, they encounter some Klingons in some uncharted territory, and the whole episode is really tense, and then they find some key at the last minute, and then everyone goes home and noone dies? That doesn't happen on Bab5. Instead of dink and dunk episode plots, the story arcs take entire seasons to develop, but when they get it on, whole fleets, casualties in the thousands. Body parts and debris floating through space. Entire friggin planets, decimated. In Star Trek, nobody dies. In Bab5, everyone in clinging by their bloody fingernails and the skin of their teeth the whole time.
With the high hair Centauri and the red eye Narn, from what I recall the Narn were an intelligent, but semi developed culture until the Centauri came along, hooked them up with some interstellar technology, gave them the smallpox blankets and slavery treatment, and the whole thing degenerated in to an orgy of slaugher. The guy ol whatshisname (high hair guy in the clip there was the nerd in Animal House) answers to is one of my all time favorite characters in anything: Ambassador Londo Mollari, who is a backstabbing Machivellian scumbag diplomat (who just so happens to have a tiny glimmer of a conscience that utterly rips him to shreds). Crap, one station cancelled it halfway through, and they managed to pick up with another, so the whole time their telling this GENIUS story, they're putting 75% of their effort into just surviving their own executives, so at a glance it's easy to laugh at the hair, and the already Ed Wood looking tech and all, BUT DON'T LET THAT FOOL YOU. Rather than either trying to start from season one, or not watching any of it, I suggest watching season 3, (SPOILER HERE!!!) which is civil war with Earth (and Earth's $%&%$^ douchebag dictator), and you'll be hooked well enought not only to sustain all five seasons, but hunt down the novels afterward. Bab 5 is better than the total sum of all Star Treks and Battlestars put together. I love this show and I'm not even into the genre! Bab 5 really is as f-ing awesome as great stories get. (There's even a hot crustacean lady played by the gal who plays Rousseau in Lost). Drax, you posted this? I love you!
Hey. Londo's in that clip down there, G'Kar's epiphany.
Also! One of my all time favorite quotes is from this show: "The avalanche has already begun. it is too late for the snowflakes to vote." -Ambassador Kosh

GameTrailers: 2008 Game of the Year

Deano says...

For me, 2008 wasn't that great a gaming year. GTAIV annoyed me eventually. Like Vice City it has many joyous moments then I came across a bit that really put me off. GTAIV didn't feel focused enough particularly with these silly tasks to maintain relationships. No more bowling for me!

The best game I played was Mass Effect from 2007. Prince of Persia and Uncharted were both nice but since recently acquiring a PS3 I don't see anything else that interests me.

I'm beginning to think that 2010 might be the next great gaming year. Certainly Mass Effect 2 will be out by then and maybe KillZone 2

Reset Button: Most Innovative Videogame of 2008

Deano says...

This is a well argued and coherent piece of critical thinking. He really could be talking about people like my sister who recently bought a PS3. She likes games but mainly watches me play because they're too tough. Apart from blu-ray use she wanted to try some games. We started with the generally well-rated Uncharted and while it is a good game it is bloody difficult on easy. Again it fell to me to complete the game while she chipped in with tips and guidance.

But when we got Prince of Persia she could actually play the damn game and thoroughly enjoyed it. The "you can't die" gaming mechanic is misleading. It's simply a conceit that makes sense within the story - if you die in most games there's no explanation for the resurrection. Here you get reset to your last checkpoint after being rescued.

The game is not frustrating at all and yet still poses a challenge. My sister still had to work out where to go, how many seeds to collect, where to find the next gate etc. These are all things she may not have bothered with if the core gameplay hadn't embraced someone of her skill level i.e far from that of the hardcore gamer and yet she is definitely not going to buy a Wii. Like alot of people she wants the cool graphics and the production design of a good 360/PS3 game but she wants something accessible.

We both agreed the ending was a bit rough and there should have been more puzzles but, for us, Prince of Persia is definitely one of the games of the year.

Thanks. Still looking forward to your vid.

Fallout 3 is pretty good eh? I've heard that from a few sources now and am becoming convinced it's not just a conspiracy. I might have to give it a shot after I complete Uncharted Drake's Fortune and Assassin's Creed.

Worst Beat Box Ever.

You obviously have no appreciation for the fine arts. The rapid tempo changes combined with the provocatively bland sounds make for a short yet exhilarating piece of avant-garde that follows in the footsteps of John Cage while still staking out its own course into unchartered territory.

Nah, I'm fooling myself. This is *terrible.

no emotions here buddy, i don't know you from adam, no headaches, the perceived abuse may be a response in kind, i dinna like the tone of the comment,(never do like similar comments) and dinna need the context, not trying to piss anyone off, or make new friends, advice for future ventures into uncharted territory??? don't post SHIT!, if ya wanna make it in Hollywood, er, whatevertheflock....zzz

Let the roast of Doc_M commence! (Parody Talk Post)

choggie says...

Have always wondered what it would be like to be in a similar field of endeavor-task-oriented, a single goal in mind, working day and night focused diligently on one project, one set of repeated actions.....the distractions and cares of the world non-existent while pushing forward into uncharted territory...surrounded by others with tasks similar to mine, all of us dedicated to reaching new horizons in our chosen disciplines.......But insects don't live that long, and DocM's here so folks like me can chase poontang and gamble.

Don't let the lack of action on yer moment here in the spotlight get ya down Doc, there are others here on the sift as uni-dimensional as yerself....It's hard to roast a cabbage y', gotta add so much flavor to it-like being on a desert island....("Will I eat fish and coconut, or fish and seaweed today???)

Speakin' a fish-glad to know you got yerself' a couple of fellas that you hang out with regularly that share similar interests and diversions...
Rob Roys and Starbucks eh??? Was it that girl you stalk that inspired you to be so......cosmopolitan???

" Sadly, you just can't do biology without animals."....Spoken like a true Onanist. If you took an ultraviolet light over to DocM's pad and dropped some good LSD, his bedroom would look like the stage backdrop at a Jefferson Airplane concert....

when he first got here, his first published post renewed my faith in cartoons being able to explain the obvious-I learned most of what I know from animated explanations of simple phenomenon as well-Now that we are clear on exactly what happened on 9-11...thanks for clearing that up for everyone.....

Yer a great sport DocM, man may the rest of your roast be good for you as well...Afterwards, you might ask Rosy Palm if it was good for her and her five sisters, too....

Zero Punctuation Review: Drake's Fortune

Awesome, the first PS3-exclusive game review, and one that I own. Uncharted is pretty fun, and it is definitely like an action movie. But his criticisms are accurate.

Does the game actually have a racist slant?

The perceived racism almost definitely isn't intentional, and near the end of the game, it definitely seems that I was killing Caucasians.
