Why we Have Blind Spots - and How To See Blood Vessels

TheGenk says...

>> ^shinyblurry:

It's more logical if you want them to be blind. The reason it is designed that way is because of UV light..water blocks it out, air doesn't..the blood vessels are in front to block out the UV light..otherwise you would be blind in a few days.
>> ^TheGenk:
Interesting, I always thought the cells were arranged like the cephalopods since it's more logical.
Got to keep that in mind when I create my army of genetically engineered superhumans to take over the world.

Since I'm an intelligent designer, I would just put a UV filter on the cornea, therefor solving this problem and increasing their ability to see in low light situations a little in one go.

It's a dumb solution if you enjoy being blind. The difference between the octopuses environment and ours is that water is good at filtering out UV rays and air is not. The blood vessels are in front of the retina to block out the UV light..if it were reversed you would be blind in a matter of days.

My point was: Why would Yahweh give his most perfect creations an imperfectly designed structure?

Especially when it's such an easy fix:
Membrane THEN photoreceptors = Perfect
Photoreceptors THEN membrane = dumb, more complicated solution.

Was the perfect eye still in research and development when Yahweh created Adam?

Just seems sorta silly that Yahweh would overlook such a simple mistake.

The choosey drug running pirate will select their mirrors for the optical weaponry they anticapte running into:

http://rmico.com/products/ir-mirrors

As for UV light, using a front surface mirror will reflect UV-A and UV-B. A typical mirror where light has to pass through glass on the way to the reflective surface will absorb UV-B but reflect UV-A.

They look like they can afford strong lasers. Even a % of that light cant be good for a mirror.

Ultraviolet Tattoos

Don_Juan says...

I have UV tattoos over my ENTIRE body! Tattoos up my leg. Tattoos down my arms. Tattoos on my tongue, eyelids, and nose! Tattoos covering each and every toe!! Tattoos on the irises of both eyes!! Tattoos the entire length of my penis and completely covering the head of my thingy!! Tattoos on each and every hair of my head!! ALL UV TATTOOS!!! The only problem I have experienced with this, is that I can't go to sleep under a UV light because of the incredible glow of ME!!!

My housemate was just talking to this Catholic chick tonight who's an administrator for a non-profit that sends missionaries overseas. He made a comment that he'd love to take a cruise to Alaska and see the glaciers before they're gone. She says we can all rest easy...global warming isn't a threat because the ozone layer is repairing itself.
1. The ozone layer problem is over Antarctica, not Alaska.
2. Ozone depletion has to do with UV light and is not significant in relation to global warming.
Fuck I wish I had been there to tell her she's an idiot. This is the problem that allows banks and corporations to do whatever they want. Mass ignorance, no ability to think critically, and willful disregard of facts. Unbelievably frustrating.

Well ozone depleting chemicals are also greenhouse gasses, so they aren't completely unrelated. And the north pole also sees ozone depletion and smaller holes from time to time. Global climatology isn't easy, especially for the layman. With many different political groups struggling for power, you do have to be suspect of a lot of the information out there. I prefer to remain cautiously agnostic on the matter. However I think we can all agree that dumping hundreds of millions of tons of dinosaur wine (even though Mesozoic was such a good year) into the ocean isn't a good idea!

Super diamonds may replace silicon.

demon_ix says...

They have an inherently superior material that can take away the overheating problem engineers face today at every aspect of miniaturization and you're presenting a technical difficulty to the manufacturing process...

From wikipedia:
Natural blue diamonds containing boron and synthetic diamonds doped with boron are p-type semiconductors. N-type diamond films are reproducibly synthesized by phosphorus doping during chemical vapor deposition. Diode p-n junctions and UV light emitting diodes (LEDs, at 235 nm) has been produced by sequential deposition of p-type (boron-doped) and n-type (phosphorus-doped) layers.

Will a cannonball float in mercury?

qruel says...

obscenesimian, I wanted to share with you the response I got in regards to the rising mercury vapor.

First, the reason the vapors are rising is due to the air current provided to make them do so. Otherwise they would fall and could not be visualized as easily. This is just good photography.

The reasons we know this is mercury vapor is the following:

1. What else could it be coming distinctly from the amalgam? Tin, Copper, silver and zinc do not vaporize into gases like mercury does.
2. Others say it is water but the amalgams are dry. Also, water does not absorb the UV light (a mercury vapor lamp) as does mercury vapor. In other words, water vapor does not absorb the UV light, if it did we could not do UV spectrometry in water solutions which is very common place in biochemical research.
3. In the class I taught at the University of Kentucky called “Mercury, Science and Politics” the students did the ‘smoking tooth’ experiment. While doing this they used the mercury vapor analyzer from the OSHA office to measure mercury levels in the mouths of each other (some with and some without amalgams). During the smoking tooth experiment the students were directed to place the intake of the mercury analyzer into the ‘smokey release’ and test it for mercury. There was absolutely no doubt, the meter on the mercury analyzer showed the vapor was mercury. Heat the amalgam and the amount of vapor visualized increased and the analyzer meter increased also.
