Asteroid 2012KT42 passes earth closer than geosync satellite

deathcow says...

> that's a white dot on a black surface.

I missed that! I saw an asteroid, maybe 30 ft wide, perhaps showing tumbling motion, being tracked at a ridiculous custom rate of azimuth and altitude change, by a team from MIT working for NASA. Watch the stars fly by in the background.

This near earth object at just thousands of miles away from missing the Earth, is probably like missing a home run in baseball because your bat was 1/50th of a millimeter too low and 0.05 mph too slow.

Air Force Pilots blow whistle on F-22 Raptor

Porksandwich says...

The very first minute of this report says these planes have never been used in combat.
Why we are risking the lives of these pilots for a training plane? It is seriously nuts.
I think of it as penis waggling. Boys and their toys. Even the pilots said they were happy to fly again at first.
Who in the Pentagon is so invested in keeping these in the air and why? It isn't rational.

Dunno about penis waggling, politicians of all genders are generally of the mindset if we paid for something we should use it no matter how wasteful/dangerous/stupid it is.

That's why so many projects end up going over budgets and never working, because they are too "invested" either corruptly or politically to say enough is enough.

They need a bunch of kids getting cancer or born with birth defects (BP oil spill and all those non-harmful chemicals they dumped in the water *wink wink nudge nudge*), or a school being demolished by a plane falling out of the sky to give them the proof they need to not look like they screwed up in the first place and instead look like they gave it a chance but obviously the people advising them are fools...never the politician or people in charge.....never.

We're talking about the same people who generally promote family values and hetero relationships while they are heading to the restroom for a little rough and tumble with a random dude they just met or whatever other devious example you want to use. Bunch of corrupt mfers basically, who give no shits about you until it makes them look bad when they don't.

that hurt em bad for sure

we have quite a low of snow this winter

I had WAY less fall from just 9 ft up. It hit a brand new toilet on the front deck I had sitting in the cardboard box still from Home Depot and blasted it, tumbling, about 12 ft

86-Year Old Gymnast Puts You to Shame

westy says...

gymnastics is fucking boring. ( mostly due to the stuffy nature of the competition ) , most of my anger is from having to watch hours and hours of it.

But as a way to keep fit and healthy in old age really good and its really nice that presumably this is something she enjoys and for old people to have something social and healthy to do is always good.

Just think as well by maintaing allot of the basic gymnastic skills of tumbling how less likely an older person would be to brake a hip or fall over in the first place. If they do fall over then they will know how to fall in a way that does less damage.

I really hope I don't have a fucked up body when i get older , or if i do IT and VR have got to the piont that its not an issue.

Outrageous jumping/flipping skills

RhesusMonk says...

Bro, you have never seen a floor performer who has done two double backflips in a single series, nor one who can front flip while spinning horizontally as well. I don't ad hom often, but I call a fat steaming pile of bullshit on you.>> ^robbersdog49:

Watch any halfway decent gymnastics competition and you'll see girls with more precision, and power than this. I know he's doing things which I could never do, that's a given. But I just don't understand why when you take gymnastics - and remove the grace, timing and precision - people become more impressed. Any half decent gymnast could do all of this if they didn't worry about their lines and timing and the planned routine. He's just saying 'look at me, I'm doing these things sloppily, aren't I great!'
No. No you're not.

The point here as i read it is "if you're not the best or if you're a little off center from a high standard, then there's no reason to be impressed".. well i disagree.
The fact that he can do something that i can't grants me reason to be impressed, even if he's not doing it as well as a highly trained professional could.. who, if we're honest, couldn't do it better than a well drawn cartoon could due to limitations of physics and all. Point is rather than just enjoying the highest visual and perfectionist quality being the cartoon, I'd enjoy this guys level of ability, your gymnast's level of ability and the cartoon's level of ability.

Ok, I see where you're coming from, and if someone just showed me this video and said 'what do you think' then I'd say yeah, he's pretty good. It's the build up, the fact that his skills are supposed to be 'outrageous'. This is the bit that really bugs me, as well as the people in the video reacting like he's doing things no-one has ever done before. He has a lot of skill, but it's not outrageous, and it's nothing that hasn't been done before, and done better, with more style and more control.
If the video had been titled 'This guy can do some pretty good tumbling' then I'd have watched it and moved on. My issue isn't with what he's doing, but rather confusion about the reaction of others to what he's doing.

Why it's good to have a dash camera!

Replying to Psychologic, for some reason quoting him made videosift just sit there when hitting the post button.

This is exactly what I did. I use a program for my android phone called dailyroads voyager. Before I had this phone I totally missed out on getting a shot of an SUV tumbling on i95 at 70mph. Saddly my optimus V dosn't take the most steller videos, but eventually I will upgrade to a phone that has a quality camera built in.
