The Linguistics of African American Vernacular English

TheFreak says...

It's funny, I just spoke to a friend about his doctoral thesis where he records an American Indian language. He said in his thesis he doesn't use IPA because it's too confusing even for academics. I think he said he modified some simplified phonetic alphabet and used a key...but I was on my third IPA myself so...whatever.

Yeah, I for one could really use an IPA for dummies or ELI5 of IPA... EDIT: The one's I've seen are still too complex, I need a better simplified one... lol.

I recommend just listening to the audio, it had some interesting points. But like many informational videos this one is edited with that standard infantile overuse of graphics, edits and effects.

Also am I the only one on the planet who doesn't understand usage of aɪər, ʉ, ð and sometimes ʊ? Wikipedia uses those IPA symbols like they are supposed to be helpful but they're Greek to me.

Many of us took the money in the spirit intended, and went shopping

Since consumer sentiment and the economy picked up right on cue, analysts from the likes of the IPA came out and said it was "wasteful", "unnecessary", and "didn't work". My feeling is that if the treasurer had been red instead of blue they would have hailed him as a genius!

What the Australian government here did, which was far more effective (and completely avoided any recession) is simply gave out cash to everyone. Unlike QE money which just sat around in safe assets this got spent (largely to pay off debts, but this would have to happen anyway and sped up a recovery).

We Got Stronger Beer

Tolwyn says...

Wait, what?? That's not true across the board. Their "budweiser" may have more Acohol by content, but those types of comparisons disappear when it comes to our micro-beer market, such as Red Hook, IPAs, etc...

It's probably the most myopic comparison you can make. They have "professional" football is like saying we both have "professional" exotic dancers. It means nothing. We have the NFL. Our worst players go to the CFL.

So... huh?

HBOs 'Questioning Darwin' - Creationists Talk Creationism

ChaosEngine jokingly says...

I find that incredibly condescending Dag.

I did not spit my "organically grown, aeropress brewed frappadingdong" at anything.

It was a locally micro-brewed organic IPA (and open source too!)

In some ways it kind of humanises creationists - makes you understand their perspective at least.

But at the same time - it's a massive troll by HBO aimed at secularists - designed to enrage and make them spit their organically grown, aeropress brewed frappadingdong at the TV screen.

Scathing Critique of Reaction to Trayvon Martin Verdict

Darkhand says...

Those buildings are almost 50 feet apart; that is not narrow man not by ANY sense of the word.

You know why those photos look dark? Someone is using a flash!

The trees? You mean the trees with no leaves? Cmon dude!

Before I thought you were just using hyperbole but now I can see you are clinging to this idea so desperately because you just want to believe it. You are welcome to believe whatever you want. That's the beauty of living in a free society!

You can't even SEE the other buildings and that has to be at least 20 feet right there end to end.

narrow

adjective

of little breadth or width; not broad or wide; not as wide as usual or expected: a narrow path.
2.
limited in extent or space; affording little room: narrow quarters.

Porksandwich said:

As for definition of Alley: An alley or alleyway is a narrow lane found in urban areas, often for pedestrians only, which usually runs between or behind buildings

So I guess you can argue how narrow it has to be to be "narrow" and how "urban" this area is. The buildings aren't sky scrapers, but they rival the height of some of the buildings in the wiki pictures.

I'll take a few extra cookies for doing the looking up you could have done.
