Man Rips Up His Cash Over Seat Belt Ticket

GDP down for 2nd quarter. America is in a recession.

newtboy jokingly says...

economic depression— An economic depression is a period of sustained, long-term downturn in economic activity in one or more economies.

Why wouldn’t fake right wing propaganda step up to the plate for all of 2020 when GDP dropped 33% in one quarter and 3.5% for the year, unemployment exploded, and likely more businesses closed per day than ever in history?

Last year was ridiculously good, 5.7% growth (to compare, Trump barely averaged 1% growth), so it’s not surprising things swung the other way. This is technically a recession, but a very weak one unlike 2020.

"The Invisible War" Trailer: Rape in the US Military

Country is going to shits.

It is but this isn't an indication of that. Our Army would've done this in any War had women been featured prominently in it. Heck read about how Russian and US soldiers treated the French and German women of the countries they liberated. The surprising thing isn't that this happens, it's that it happens constantly and the men in charge do nothing. This is why this has to come out, and shine a light on this stuff. It's sad but we're humans and we need to be shamed into doing the right thing sometimes. It's an ongoing process that needs to happen.

I feel terrible that the women who serve have ever feared the men who they serve with and are meant to be protecting them like a sister in the field. People say that feminists have overstayed their welcome or something, well here's your issue feminists, this is something that you can't overreact to.

Dan Savage on the bible at High School Journalism convention

Sounds like the perfect word of an infallible universe creating god to me.>> ^shinyblurry:

The laws in Leviticus do not apply to Christians; they were for Israel, for that time and place only. That was the Old Covenant, and Christians are under the New Covenant. In the New Testament, Romans 1:24-27, I Timothy 1:10, I Cor. 6:9-10, and Jude 7 clearly identify homosexuality as a sin. So, immediately his diatribe about shellfish and menstration is a strawman, because none of that applies to Christians in the first place.
In regards to slavery, Dan is purposefully misreprenting the bible, because it does not endorse it. In the Old Testament, there are rules that govern the treatment of slaves in Israel, but in Israel, slavery was not the same thing as it was in modern times. Slavery there was essentially a kind of profession, where people would sell themselves into slavery to have daily food and shelter in exchange for their labor.
Dan is also deliberately misrepresenting what the New Testament says about slavery. For one, Paul did say there are no slaves:
Colossians 3:11
Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all
The bible says that every person has intrinsic worth and value. It says that all people are made in the image of God and He doesn't love the poor man any less than the rich man. In fact very often it condemns the rich man.
Dan also deliberately misrepresents what Paul wrote in the letter to Philemon, because it is the exact opposite of what he implied! Paul told Philemon to let his slave go, and if need be, Paul would compensate him out of his own pocket. Paul told Philemon that his slave had far more value as a free man, and what he said was actually a command to let him go.
Philemon 1:14-21
But I was willing to do nothing without your consent, that your goodness would not be as of necessity, but of free will. For perhaps he was therefore separated from you for a while, that you would have him forever, no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much rather to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
If then you count me a partner, receive him as you would receive me. But if he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, put that to my account. I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it (not to mention to you that you owe to me even your own self besides). Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in the Lord. Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even beyond what I say
As far as the reactions from some of the people in this thread go, it's very typical of the sift. The fact is, many of its most vocal members are self-admitted anti-theists. The sift loves videos that bash Christians, and loves anyone who says nasty things against the bible or Christians in general. It doesn't matter if its true, or if it even makes any sense; people who bash Christians and the bible are instant heros here. A pretense of tolerance and equality is brought up when these subjects come up, but hypocritically Christians are always exempt, and often there is a "string em up" mentality as we see in this thread. That the sift denies this was inappropiate, especially at a conference about anti-bullying, is the least surprising thing I've seen today.
Let's face facts..if it were a Christian speaker saying things in a similar tone and manner to a group of homosexuals, it would be as if the world had ended, and many here would be calling for the speaker to be crucified.

Oh get over it! EVERYBODY spies! And always has!!! Long long before there was an america. And if you think america didn't always spy, have you ever heard of Paul Revere?!? I honestly don't see why people are surprised at this. The only surprising thing is that they were leaked.

It occurs to me your comment may have been sarcastic. If so, I redact the "get over it" >> ^archer_of_loaf:

New Report: Biological or Nuclear WMD Attack Within 5 Years

Ryjkyj says...

^ If you didn't already know it was possible then you've been living under a rock. Seriously. The media comes out with this and people get scared? I've heard people say: "If Obama gets elected the terrorists are going to attack!" It works both ways. Terrorists are going to attack. The surprising thing is that it doesn't happen more often. 40,000 illegal immigrants come over the Mexican border alone each year and people feel safe because of who's in the white house? Really?

You know what my first thought was on the morning of 9/11/01? It was, "jeez, I've been expecting this for so long. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often."

Even if an event the size of 9/11 were to occur in America EVERY YEAR, more people would still die of peanut alergies.

The depressing thing is that this really isn't a surprise. Things have gone downhill. This reminded me of the documentary in the shadow of the palms, a film that was shot before, during and after the initial US invasion into Iraq and looked at the changes to the civilians. this is the website with their trailer http://www.intheshadowofthepalms.com/

"I Like Turtles" Kid Speaks Again

SDGundamX says...

I like turtles too. Had one as a pet for over 15 years (Eastern Box Turtle, technically considered a tortoise) until my parents wound up losing him in the backyard while I was away at college. I also had other turtles (mostly Painter) that my dad found on the side of the freeway on his way home from work. I took care of them for a little while before setting them free in the state park near my house.

I would actually recommend against having turtles as pets unless you've got a nice big backyard that you can fence off (mostly to keep the predators out rather than the turtles in). I think it's kind of cruel that people keep them in aquariums and such. Turtles may move slowly but they do like to be able to move around a lot. You also have to be very careful about their diet, as they need a healthy variety of food. Vet bills are pretty expensive because not many vets specialize in them.

The one surprising thing about turtles is that they can actually become affectionate pets. It sounds crazy, but my turtle used to follow me around when I let him out in the backyard. He also loved being pet, not on the shell (that drives turtles crazy, it's like someone poking you directly in the spine) but under the neck. Go figure.
