Thanks, Jonny. I appreciate your point. It sure bugs me, though, having us happily keep something that announces at the start that its unlawful to transmit it.

In principle, I agree with you. I've tried many times to see that rule/guideline enforced, and failed every time. Despite my admonitions to dag that having the FAQ entry provides zero legal cover if there is copyrighted material on VS, he has never supported removal of any sift when it comes up. I've never gotten a straight answer from him on it, but I think he wants the FAQ entry so as to discourage new(er) users from regularly posting up every new Simpsons episode, etc. If/when VS starts to see a large number of full length movies or television episodes posted, I suspect dag will start to enforce the rule.

On a side note, Dr. Strangelove presents an interesting example of the failure of copyright laws. The whole point of copyright is to encourage new ideas by providing knowledge creators with some exclusivity over their works for some time. Given that Kubrick and Peter George (author of the original novel) are both dead, there is no reason for Dr. Strangelove to still be under copyright. But the law allows for copyright term to last for as long as 70 years(!) after the death of the author. And in this case, the copyright is owned by a corporate entity, extending the copyright term to as much as 95 years after publication.

I could write endless pages of text on this subject, so I better stop here before I get carried away.

Dr. Strangelove (94 mins)

Clips of great scenes from Dr. Strangelove? I'm there. The whole dang movie? Go use BitTorrent--or even respect the copyright. I know we violate it, but the severity seems to vary, and this is totally blatant. I don't want this here. I would hope others would feel the same way.

If we do want it here, well. Well, I would take that as a sign that VS is one big batch of false advertising. PLEASE tell me that isn't the case.

I've seen North by Northwest and It Happened One Night and loved both of them, but I've never seen The Big Lebowski. I love John Goodman (underappreciated, in my opinion) and I really love Jeff Bridges, and I don't know why I haven't seen it. I watch lots and lots of movies and I think that I have above-average taste, although that is easy when the average person loves Armageddon and similar crap. You seem to have good taste. I'm sort of jealous that you have your top movies all figured out like that. I have a very vague idea of which movies are my favorites.

I love Hitchcock, too. And good old sweety-pie Frank Capra won my heart many, many years ago. Do you like Wes Anderson movies?

In reply to this comment by poolcleaner:
The Big Lebowski. I'm a bigger Cohen Brothers fan than I am Kubrick -- though, I am an even bigger Hitchcock fan, despite Hitchcock taking fourth with North By Northwest. (My third pick being Capra's It Happened One Night, starring Clark Gable.)

Thanks, Pinky. I'm going to assume your avatar is you, yes? I grew up watching the Pink Panther movies, and Dr. Strangelove is my second favorite movie of all time -- I couldn't see either of my top 2 movies ever being usurped by another. Agreed, Sellers portrayal of Jacques Clouseau is brilliant to this day. Classic bumbling man in over his head who wins the day. Sometimes painful to watch, but always funny. lol

I love your avatar. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is one of my favorite movies and Peter Sellers is one of my favorite actors. Have you seen the Pink Panther movies? Peter Sellers as Jacques Clouseau is fantastic. Anyway, cool avatar.
