US vs Swedish Recruitment Ads

zeoverlord says...

>> ^rich_magnet:

Not to critique the advertisements nor the military agenda of either nation (though such critiques are warranted), it's possibly of merit to note that participation in the US military is purely voluntary, whereas the Swedish Defense Forces has traditionally (until 2010) been based on conscription.

true, in Sweden they have so far always advertised for specific things, like Nordic battle group, overseas service or officer recruitment, all of these requires you to already have completed your basic military service.
Whereas in the US(and Canada), the ads are made to get people to enter military life for the first time, thus all the honor, pride, army of one, be all you can be, and all those platitudes.

But all i ever did with any meaning in my service was to stand in front of Stockholm's castle for six days with a fully loaded assault rifle shouting at people not to pee on the fountains, i mean, how much honor and pride is in all of that.

^Nice copy pasta. Well then I raise you with this:

Richard Falk, professor emeritus of international law at Princeton University and U.N. Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory said that the “ships that were situated in the high seas where freedom of navigation exists, according to the law of the seas” and called for those responsible to "be held criminally accountable for their wrongful acts".[181]

In a legal analysis published by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a staff expert on international law explained that countries are not allowed to extend their sovereignty on areas outside of their coastal waters. In a zone extending 24 nautical miles (44 km) from the coast, countries have the right to inspect ships in order to enforce immigration and public health laws and regulations. In international waters, if there is reasonable suspicion of piracy or human trafficking, a country has the right to access foreign ships. If the suspicion remains, it can search the ship. Israeli soldiers have the right to defend themselves. If Israel has used force against the ships without legal justification, the crew members had the right to defend themselves.[text 2]

Robin Churchill, international law professor at the University of Dundee in Scotland, said there was no legal basis for boarding the ships as they were in international waters. [182] Ove Bring, Swedish international law professor, said that Israel had no right to take military action.[183] That was supported by Mark Klamberg at Stockholm University,[184] Hugo Tiberg, maritime law professor[185] and Geir Ulfstein, professor at maritime law at University of Oslo,[186] while Jan Egeland, director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs said that only North Korea behaved in international waters in the same manner as Israel.[187]

Canadian scholar Michael Byers notes that the event would only be legal if the Israeli boarding were necessary and proportionate for the country's self defence. Byers believes that "the action does not appear to have been necessary in that the threat was not imminent."[188] Jason Alderwick, a maritime analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies of London, was quoted as saying that the Israeli raid did not appear to have been conducted lawfully under the convention.[189] Anthony D'Amato, international law professor at Northwestern University School of Law, argued that the San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea applies to a situation in which the laws of war between states are in force. He said the laws of war do not apply in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which isn't even a state. He said the law of the Geneva Conventions would apply.[9] Said Mahmoudi, an international law professor, said that boarding a ship on international waters, kill and capture civilians is not in line with the law.[190]

A group of Israeli lawyers, including Avigdor Feldman, petitioned the Israeli High Court charging that Israel had violated the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea by capturing the boats in international waters. [191]

Turkey's foreign minister Ahmet Davutoğlu called the raid "a grave breach of international law and constituted banditry and piracy—it was “murder” conducted by a State, without justification".[22] Prominent Turkish jurists have characterized Israel's actions as a violation of international law and a "war crime."

Turkey's deputy parliament speaker, Guldal Mumcu, said in a declaration that "[t]his attack was an open violation of United Nations rules and international law," and that "Turkey should seek justice against Israel through national and international legal authorities. The parliament expects the Turkish government to revise the political, military and economic relations with Israel, and to take effective measures."[192]
Dr. Turgut Tarhanlı, dean of the Law department of İstanbul Bilgi University,[193] cited the concept of innocent passage, under which vessels are granted safe passage through territorial waters in a manner which is not "prejudicial to the peace, good order or the security" of the state.[194] He said that the Convention on the Law of the Sea stipulates that a coastal state may consider intervention if a ship is engaged in arms and drug smuggling, the slave trade or terrorist activities. However, the case with the aid boats is totally different. They set sail in accordance with the Customs Act and are known to be carrying humanitarian aid, not weapons or ammunition. According to the Convention on the Law of the Sea, Israel was not entitled to launch a military operation against the boats and activists.[195]

3rd-World sanitation: single-use biodegradable toilet bag

Stormsinger says...

@arvana
And yet...on the About Peepoople page, they say this
"The company was founded in 2006 and is based in Stockholm, Sweden."
And this, "The Peepoo toilet is scheduled to be available for delivery in the third trimester of 2010."

I'm not saying it's a scam, but based on the website, it's not actually in production, and several claims struck me as a bit overblown, and self-conflicting.

How much are they going to sell for? I could find no actual numbers about that, just claims that it would be affordable even to the poorest. If someone's making only a few dollars a month, these would have to run around 10 for a penny to be affordable. Somehow I don't see that price being sustainable.

How long does it take to sanitize? In one spot, it says 2-4 weeks, but another says 1-2 years. Probably just a case of a web designer not knowing the material, but still...it doesn't inspire my confidence. I assume that puncturing the bag in less time than whatever-it-takes would release the unsanitized contents into the wild...but didn't see anything addressing that (and to be fair, that's still a lesser problem than the current nothing-at-all solution).

And the sanitizing process is just to add urea? It seems odd that adding a few grams of what's already in urine is enough to sanitize it. I wouldn't call it wrong, but it just seems weird, like saying that adding more yeast to a salty bread would make it sweet.

What I'd like to see is a total cost comparison to a more infrastructure based solution. I suspect that septic tank based toilets would probably be cheaper and more effective over the long run.

Damned stupid quoting system!!!
I guess we'll just have to do without quotes.

Stockholm Syndrome makes her my daughter. It makes all of them my daughters. And I resent your implication that I kidnapped them and put them in the basement. I don't have a basement.
>> ^rottenseed:
Preteen daughter? Don't you have to have sex in order to have a preteen daughter? I don't think that girl you kidnapped at the park and locked in your mother's basement can be considered your "daughter".

I went to visit a childhood friend in Sweden, he lived near Sollentuna just outside Stockholm. His house looked out on what seemed like endless forest. We got drunk one night unable to hold down some whiskey, went out wandering the fields smoking cigarettes and chanced upon a bridge in a open plain, it was twilight, we lay down on the bridge rails, watching over a star filled sky beaming at us, you could clearly make out the milky way. We tried trace out satellites fly overhead. We saw a light dance in the sky wavering and wished it was a UFO.

I hate dog shit on the sidewalks and in the grass around my neighborhood. But, what's worse is once I caught this drunk chick (after the bars closed) squatting and pissing on the walkway just in front of my building's entrance.
I wanted to call her out, but I was embarrassed for her and just let her be.

Last time that happened to me i was guarding Stockholms castle, i aimed my AK5 at them and had a military patrol arrest them, they almost peed in their pants, that is if they hadn't done it on the castle before.
We made them wash it up before we released them, i think they got the message.

Awesome. You should have thrown them in the moat, or locked them in the dungeon.

Swedish robot breaks Zeroth Law (Blog Entry by poolcleaner)

quantumushroom says...

The incident took place in June 2007 at a factory in Bålsta, north of Stockholm, when the industrial worker was trying to carry out maintenance on a defective machine generally used to lift heavy rocks. Thinking he had cut off the power supply, the man approached the robot with no sense of trepidation.

But the robot suddenly came to life and grabbed a tight hold of the victim's head. The man succeeded in defending himself but not before suffering serious injuries.

A robot that lifts rocks? It's like a Flintstones/Jetsons crossover.

This is Norway

Aside from the skis, fjords and a slight difference in color of the itchy clothes, I'm having a tough time finding the difference between Norway and Sweden. When exactly did the capital of Sweden move from Norway to Stockholm? Gotta check Wikipedia on that.
