The girl who silenced the world for 6 minutes

HAHAHAHA! Holes in the ozone, don't make me laugh. Ooops...too late.
The hole in the ozone has always existed. Ozone is depleted by the sun's rays and when the north or south pole is exposed to constant sun light, a hole is formed.

Hey dude, I just noticed that one of my videos is listed as your favorite sift. I'm flattered, even though I obviously had absolutely no influence on either the band or the video makers. I think it's really cool too.

Because of this I'd like to share my favorite sift with you: Surface Of Eceon's "The Open Sea". I have no idea if trippy, hypnotic videos do anything for you, and if not then I'll warn you now to avoid it. However if you want to feel like you're being transported into an ethereal dimension that makes you feel like you're one with the cosmos, then this video just might hit the spot. It was submitted almost a year before I even joined, and at least once a month or so I go back to view it. Once I saw this video (after accidentally stumbling upon it when surfing the Sift) I knew I had found a home here, and I joined not much longer after that. Cool shit like this gets featured nowhere else on the web except here.

You are my brother, whether you realize that or not. Take care, amigo.

I'm guessing they don't have designated seats for the elderly or pregnant. This video really makes me want to visit. When do we leave? On second thought, I think I'd rather visit the South Pole in the dead of winter and sit on a penguin egg for a few months.

Surface of Eceon: Time lapse video of the South Pole

rychan says...

So was that the moon or the sun appearing at the same time as the stars and aurora? It seems like the camera would have to have amazing dynamic range to capture the sun with the stars, and the atmosphere would have to be amazingly clear (which is possible at the South pole).

During the months without light, the moon must still show up in Antarctica, right? Never really thought about that.

And seeing the sky and stars rotate completely horizontally, that's trippy.

And great music.

Very eloquent and interesting chap - in a few sentences he made me think about what causes the earth to have north and south poles. I wonder if this is still on? I might go down and take a look.

Going Tribal - Bruce Parry's Drug Experiences

Eden says...

Here's some info about Bruce Parry. He's a pretty amazing guy. Last year (I think it was) he recreated Scott's expedition to the South Pole, racing against a Norwegian team, just like the Scott and Amundsen race. They used all the equivalent gear and methods (dogs etc.). Of course the Norwegians kicked their frozen asses, but it was a fascinating series on the Beeb.

Walk around old building & creepy tunnels at the south pole

coupland says...

It's fascinating to read books like "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and realize that the South Pole was until very recently the stuff of science fiction novels. In a single century we both discovered the south pole and explored the furthest reaches of the solar system.

Peanut Butter: The Atheist's Nightmare!

atritium says...

As far as global warming, who was burning fossil fuels 100,000 years ago to cause that warming?

How about 18,000 years ago at the end of the Pleistocene? Lots of fossil fuel burning going on then?

Climate is a described by coupled sets of non-linear relationships whose actual variables haven't even been convincingly identified.

Those pointing to computer models are either frauds or incompetent; as the models are worthless. Every single line of that code needs to be held up to the light of day; the fudge factors, approximated physics, poor math, and then the whole sections where they have no idea but just wing it.

Global warming is just a tool to empower bureaucrats and unaccountable international organizations who want to control you. With communism and socialism disreputable, it's the new vehicle.

Known causes of climate change:

(1) Astronomical Causes

11 year and 206 year cycles: Cycles of solar variability ( sunspot activity )
21,000 year cycle: Earth's combined tilt and elliptical orbit around the Sun ( precession of the equinoxes )
41,000 year cycle: Cycle of the +/- 1.5° wobble in Earth's orbit ( tilt )
100,000 year cycle: Variations in the shape of Earth's elliptical orbit ( cycle of eccentricity )

(2) Atmospheric Causes

Heat retention: Due to atmospheric gases, mostly gaseous water vapor (not droplets), also carbon dioxide, methane, and a few other miscellaneous gases-- the "greenhouse effect"
Solar reflectivity: Due to white clouds, volcanic dust, polar ice caps

(3) Tectonic Causes

Landmass distribution: Shifting continents (continental drift) causing changes in circulatory patterns of ocean currents. It seems that whenever there is a large land mass at one of the Earth's poles, either the north pole or south pole, there are ice ages.

Undersea ridge activity: "Sea floor spreading" (associated with continental drift) causing variations in ocean displacement.

Saturn's Storm - 2 sec. loop

silvercord says...

A hurricane-like storm two-thirds as wide as the Earth is raging on Saturn's south pole, new images from the Cassini spacecraft reveal. Such clear hurricane-like features have never before been seen on any other planet, but scientists are not sure what is causing them.

The dark eye of the "hurricane" spans about 8000 kilometres and is surrounded by rings of clouds that tower about 30 to 75 kilometres above it. This is a video of Saturn's storm taken over a period of three hours.
