Bill Maher - New Rule - The Danger of False Equivalency

RedSky says...

I think it's not so much not being able to tell them apart but not being willing to investigate them beyond their labels. I spend some time in other online communities with people from the US and the sense I get is Clinton is generally seen as corrupt and criminal and Trump as perhaps sexist / racist but a good businessman. I would argue both labels are to some extent misleading and false.

I don't see much discussion that goes beyond those labels. In both cases from the snippets I've seen of US TV and of some online tabloids, that's about as deep as the discussion goes. To really understand the problem with both candidates you need to read good editorial work from more reputable / long form media (weekly publications, newspapers that aren't tabloids) and frankly I think very few have been willing to do that.

Much of it comes down to politics being treated as entertainment and reading long written articles simply isn't entertaining. Unfortunately it's going the same way here in Australia. Everyone is obsessed about opinion polls. We might have short periods of formal election campaigning (unlike the epic US election process), but because of only 3 years between elections for our Prime Minister (and the fact that he or she can and does get replaced within those 3 years by Parliament, unlike the US President), we have constant personal political battles and recrimination rather than deliberation over policy.

I mean right now, we have a prime minister (Turnbull, re-elected earlier this year), who unseated a previously elected prime minister (Abbott, in the previous term) by a vote of no confidence. Abbott himself (several parliamentary terms before) had successfully unseated Turnbull as minority leader (when another party held the prime minister-ship). Now there are rumors that Abbott wants to challenge Turnbull. And that's just one of our political parties.

I only listened to that last 3 minutes because of ^, and because i generaly can't stomach Bill.

I have a hard time buying into the idea that people can't tell them apart. You don't have to do much/any study to see that they are incredibly different. Just because you don't like either of them doesn't in any way say that you think they are equal. I hate them both for completely different reasons. And although i dislike them both I would rather one of them be president over the other. My vote however will not reflect who that is.

Hillary Clinton Accepts Democratic Nom to 1/2 Empty Arena

iaui says...

I'm not totally on board for Hillary but I don't think this actually happened. We never see a shot of Hillary on the stage. Just some guy claiming this is happening.

Edit: The audio is clearly snippets of something Hillary said at some point. I'm not sure if it's actually coming from the stage/audio booth or if it's just something this guy concocted, but it's clearly not Hillary speaking on stage live.

Katie Couric interviews Bernie Sanders

notarobot says...

I don't disagree with your take on this snippet. It reads like:

K: "Hey, are you serious about this, for reals?"
B: "Yup."

Bear in mind that this interview was recorded in June, 2015---almost a year ago---when Bernie was mostly unknown by the general public.

The full interview carries a much better tone, and allows Bernie to dismiss some of the early criticism that were floating around back then.

Bernie has come a long way in the past year.

Yeah, fuck that interview.
The implied message that he can't get elected...journalists need to be a little more self aware so they don't let their prejudices leak out through their mouths.

Bernie Sanders VS. The Patriot Act

harlequinn says...

Lol. No agenda.

I'm not American, so I have little exposure to American politics (only news snippets). I have an interest in it though, and take notes where I can.

I asked because there are hardly any politicians (or people in general) that won't support the rights they like and deny the ones they don't. And America's constitution is such a strong document, it's hard not to trip up on things like free speech, firearms, non-interference from the government, etc.

It is possible to enact sensible gun control without banning assault weapons. Look to New Zealand for perfectly sensible gun laws that allow assault weapons. They have a lower homicide rate, and lower homicide by firearm rate than Australia.

I just looked up his policies (google neatly summarised it for me - thank you google god). He's got some things that I think are great. Universal health care is the best.

Should I?

In all seriousness though, no, I don't really have an answer to your question. What I like about Sanders is ...

... I just wasn't clear from the context of your original post if you were asking a question or if you "had an agenda". Now I get it. I think.

Canada vs. USA -- Debates

RedSky says...

I watched some snippets of it for amusement. It's pretty clear the US debate, especially during the primaries are geared towards entertainment. I really hope this isn't the direction that debates go here in Australia although our short campaign cycle means we usually only get a few debates anyway.

They did ask the obvious tough questions of candidates like Trump (bankruptcies, PCness) but the willingness to let them ramble on with empty platitudes and campaign lines (not just the moderators not keeping them in check but the audience's willingness to lap it up) really speaks to how it's much more about emotion and attitude than content.

Kitty to the rescue!

dannym3141 says...

I think that the noise being picked up by the recorder makes it sound a lot worse than what it is. In my opinion, he's only really patting next to the baby.

Would it not be fair to say that clapping is a roughly equivalent action? And i see people doing that near babies all the time without someone worrying about affecting the kid's mental state as it grows up, or worrying if the kid perceives the clapping of hands as a threat or worry.

If babies are too young to understand, then they may misunderstand clapping? Or alternatively how are they to understand the waving of someone's hand nearby to be aggressive? Especially given that it appears to be a comfortable family unit.

Most importantly, can we please consider that the baby was slapping its own leg? Perhaps one day the baby slapped its hand about, the father did the same thing, and the baby got enjoyment out of it? It slaps its hand about again at the end too. We don't know, we can't know, and it's very unfair to make so many casual assumptions - not just about his actions, but about what is normal for different people.

I'm concerned about the amount of assumptions being made in chastising this man. Especially when drawing a parallel to an anecdote about someone "growing up skittish" because of "teasing". Correlation, not necessarily causation.. and again, what evidence is this of teasing, and how is it fair to speculatively compare it to something stated so vaguely?

I'm sorry to be combative about it, but i feel this is a huge leap of imagination based on 30 seconds of video. A great many of us (if not all) could be made to look all kinds of contrary ways based on 30 second snippets, and it's an indelible brush that he's being hurriedly tarred with. I stand to be corrected, but i don't see any signs of distress either from the baby or the person recording, and the baby looks otherwise healthy and well provisioned. It was not placed in that seating with those accoutrements without care and attention. I think more harm than good can come of judging things like this, considering the subtlety of most *actual* abusers.

It is with disappointment that I find your comments. ...belittling, condescending, and insulting. After the many comments privately exchanged up to this point that this one is not proffered so is indicative of a lack of respect I can only find interesting and telling.

As to the video, its merits or lack thereof and for the various opinions about same, it may be that in the fullness of time consensus will change...or not. As to my investment in the matter, I presently have none. To knee jerk, in your vernacular, comments or opinions garnered from snippets, headlines, media articles, predilection of personal beliefs, etc,. I have little to no respect to offer.

I do find the subject of this video interesting and have done enough research to find merit in further evaluation and a skeptical eye towards purported findings. But, that is neither here nor there. I posted it primarily for my own archival purposes fully expecting the reaction received with no concern about it. This practice will be repeated exercised if not often so. I will admit surprise at the development precipitating this exchange. Oh well.

I do not need to agree with others, as is often the case, to respect and even like and care for them. I do, however, have a disdain for apparent character deficiencies as is evidenced by behavior. Also, oh well. Neither do I suffer the defect of ego that I must defend a point of view or opinion or engage in any allied exercise of futility and certainly not in this environ as the honored civilized pursuit of intelligent discourse is so oft shunned in favor of banal, insipid and vitriolic attacks.

Enjoy and thank you for the many civil, kind and pleasant exchanges this one notwithstanding, of course.

So sorry that flatly pointing out the statistical proof from your video that your video is (repeatedly proven) ridiculous BS insanity garners your downvote.

Comment down-voting is reserved for inappropriate comments as described above or comments you honestly find morally objectionable or insulting, and must only be used for a comment that contains truly offensive content.

Exactly what part do you find insulting...or are you just kneejerkingly downvoting someone who disagrees with you...again?
(I expect you'll also downvote this one, but it may be insulting... to the video and the repeatedly consistently thoroughly proven wrong theory it supports, not a person, but hey, don't let that stop ya).

ARRESTED FOR ANTI-OBAMA POSTS

Vygorous says...

Just to contribute a little bit (I am neither here nor there). Here is something on the piece outside of Russian Times, not much more credible, however has some quotes from the police:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/21/brandon-j-raub-marine-detained_n_1817484.html EDIT: Guess I cant post links on this site heh, Huffingtonpost is the site, guys name is Brandon J. Raub [admin edit: url restored]

Article Snippets:

•"In one message earlier this month according to authorities, Raub wrote: "Sharpen my axe; I'm here to sever heads.""

•"Police – acting under a state law that allows emergency, temporary psychiatric commitments upon the recommendation of a mental health professional"

•"One of his Facebook posts, ... pictured the gaping hole in the Pentagon and asked "where's the plane?""

•"Dee Rybiski, an FBI spokeswoman in Richmond, said there was no Facebook snooping by her agency. "We received quite a few complaints about what were perceived as threatening posts," she said. "Given the circumstances with the things that have gone on in the country with some of these mass shootings, it would be horrible for law enforcement not to pay attention to complaints.""

•"Authorities say it wasn't an arrest because Raub doesn't face criminal charges."

•"Col. Thierry Dupuis, the county police chief, said Raub was taken into custody upon the recommendation of mental health crisis intervention workers. He said the action was taken under the state's emergency custody statute, which allows a magistrate to order the civil detention and psychiatric evaluation of a person who is considered potentially dangerous.
He said Raub was handcuffed because he resisted officers' attempts to take him into custody."

Common Core U.S.A. ~ Re-Education & Indoctrination Learning

Yogi says...

I'll watch this in a bit but I just wanted to get some snippets off the Freedom Project Education site.

https://www.fpeusa.org/index.php/about-fpe/what-is-fpe

"Rooted firmly in Judeo-Christian values..." Completely made up after WW2 in order to establish that we were against the Holocaust even though we did little to help the Jews during WW2.

"At FPE we proudly refuse all government funding..." Yes we're all very proud of you.

"Public-school apologists have spent decades convincing parents that their children belong to the government schools. The results have been disastrous to education and undermine the primacy of parents." Because of de-funding pushed by Republicans which these people voted for.

"FPE is in no way influenced by teachers’ unions or answerable to the Department of Education, or state Departments of Public Instruction. We don’t indoctrinate students or promote a liberal agenda. And we don’t advocate for the removal of God from contemporary culture. We teach truth, rigor, and Christian values."

I can't wait to watch this, I'm sure it's a barrel of fun. Going through the courses I noticed there don't seem to be any art classes or theater. I guess that stuff is for hippies and faggots right?

Wow!

yellowc says...

This guy is actually really cool.

I used to watch his YT channel but alas I simply can't find a link at the moment, maybe some one with great powers can help. I remember being introduced to him by a video on this site, I just can't remember the content, I think it was looking at different Puzzle Boxes.

Anyway, basically he has a bunch of videos reviewing toys from all over the world and he has a real great way of talking about them. This little snippet gives you a funny idea of how he presents, he does that a lot where he ends a review with a single word like "Amazing".

Wolfenstein The New Order

RedSky says...

I'm cautiously encouraged. They've said they're doing single player only, there's some apparent focus here on creating memorable characters and scenarios rather than explosions go boom, plus they've released what looks like snippets of in-game play albeit cinematics rather than just creating fancy CGI trailers. Only time will tell I guess.
