I Heckled an Amazon AWS Presentation (Blog Entry by dag)

campionidelmondo says...

That poor guy most likely had no hand in the shutdown of the WikiLeaks servers, I don't see how he deserves to be heckled. Also, it's just a (conspiracy) theory that they shut down the WikiLeaks servers because of the US Gov't, or because of massive DDOS attacks.

Very likely Amazon told the guy to refer to their statement if any questions about WikiLeaks arise. I dunno, it's a free seminar, don't ruin it for the people who actually go there for constructive reasons.

Bill Maher New Rules May 13, 2011

Well, Christianity as it is practiced in America is extremely skewed..most of those evengelicals, the trinity broadcasting network, the lunatics known as the republican party..their brand of Christianity is a disgrace and a perversion. Things like the prosperity gospel should make any Christian sick to their stomach. Sadly a lot of people buy into it because living prudently, with a healthy dose of self-denial is not very popular in this gross materialism we are drowning in. I can understand why atheists cant stand these people..because I cant stand them either.

It's great of you to concede this SB.
Christianity in America is more like a personal empowerment and wealth creation seminar than a religion. Christ never said "the Lord helps those who help themselves" - though that's the primary tenant that most American Christians seem to follow. Maybe Tony Robbins is the second coming.
>> ^shinyblurry:
Sadly, he's right. I was fairly astonished that so many Christians didn't see anything wrong with celebrating someones death, Bin Laden or not. Though, what Bill Maher doesn't mention is that there was also a large number of Christians who did understand that was wrong and spoke out against it.
Many people do follow Christ in name only. The bible says they are only borrowing the name at a price. It's really no different however than anything else human beings do. That humans can mess up something good should be no surprise to anyone.

Steven Seagal gives an aikido demo on the Merv Griffin show

TheFreak says...

Strange to come across this video though because I just got back from a weekend Aikido seminar out of town.

I'm not a big believer in Ki. To me it's all about body mechanics rather than some undefinable energy. I've been to a few Maruyama Sensei seminars (Kokikai) and he's all about Ki but it just came across to me like a marketing trick designed to appeal to Americans. I even uked for Maruyama Sensei through an entire seminar and truthfully, I played along with all his Ki power demonstrations (hell, he's 8th Dan) but I fealt like I could have pushed him over at any time.

Anyway, although Seagal Sensei obviously develops a lot of power from his center, I can't help but feel that his sheer mass plays a big part in his Aikido. That and his "Sensei Power", that intangible mystical force that made me pretend I couldn't push over an 80 year old man in front of his own students.

The Daily Show: RESPECT MY AUTHORITAH

He's always trying to keep republicans happy even though they hate him.

Bush had to keep Democrats happy even though they hated him too. There is a word for a politician who does whatever he wants over the objections of everyone else. Dictator.

As far as Stewart is concerned? M'eh - nice to see him finally taking a few shots, but he's late to the party. Plus he isn't alarmed at Obama's radicalism or incompetence. No. Like many leftists, Stewart is more upset over 'hypocrisy'. He isn't mad that Obama has death camps or violates the law. He's mad that he's a hypocrite about it. Nice to see Stewart catching up to my analysis, even if it takes him 20 months.

Obama doesn't care about America, or its people. He's a leftist radical from academia who is trying to actualize all the bullcrap theories he and his other college buddies argued about between bong hits. His reaction to the oil spill is a great example. He doesn't care about the oil, or the environment, or business, or people. He just sees this as an excuse to cram Cap & Trade down everyone's throat and so realize another leftist academic pipe-dream (alternative energy).

You can see it every time he opens his flapping yap. He can't stand it when people disagree with him. He doesn't like trying to GOVERN and actually make things work or help people. All he wants to do is hold seminars, give speeches, and run workshops like a good little Alinskyite. He's a small, petty, incompetent, lightweight dilettante. He's out of his league and he knows it. Too bad Stewart - unlike myself - didn't realize this 20 months ago.

Cop Kicks BP Protestor off Bike, then Arrests Cameraman

kronosposeidon says...

@blankfist: First of all, unions for civil servants need to protect their employees from bad management. You can't fire a civil servant, but their bosses can, as long as they've shown they have a good reason for terminating the employee (when they have a union).

Secondly, I'm not defending this cop's actions. But before he is terminated and possibly brought up on assault charges, he is still entitled to fair representation. It's what this country's legal system is founded upon, n'est-ce pas? So why can't workers be entitled to it in the work place?

Now I believe that law enforcement internal investigations should be open to the public, which unfortunately they are not in most jurisdictions (maybe all of them, for all I know). Just like our courts, they need to be open, especially when it comes to law enforcement issues. So basically I'm saying the system needs to be overhauled. That doesn't mean that unions need to be cut out of the process. True, they advocate for the worker, even when they do wrong. But just like the courts, as long as the truth is presented then hopefully justice will prevail, even if that involves terminating the employee.

I'm a union member, and I used to be VP of my local for a while. I remember when I went to our national convention back in 2002 I attended a seminar headed by the national VP in which he discussed grievance procedures for employee terminations and our success rates. Our union is usually pretty damn successful when it comes to grieving terminations, he said, but we can't win them all. He then went on to say that most of the cases we lose are just as well, because the vast majority of those are justifiable, and we don't want shitbirds in the ranks making all of us look bad. So we're not unreasonable.

Does ANYBODY actually look up what this damn word means!? I guess College Humor didn't have time to either...
It's actually pretty simple; an example of irony is watching someone miss a basket and saying, "That was a great shot," i.e. saying the opposite of an implied meaning.
I don't know what the hell word describes the convoluted scenarios playing out in this video.

Situational Irony.

So, "an outcome that turns out to be very different from what was expected"...

When the plane crashed down, he thought "isn't this nice" is probably the only example of actual irony in the original song, and they've replaced it here with "Now I'll never make it to that Fear of Flying seminar" which fits neither definition.

An old man turned 98. He won the lottery and died the next day of a shock-induced heart attack. - exactly what you would expect
It's a free ride to an over-priced car dealership. - exactly what you would expect

The rest are convoluted or don't make sense at all.

US Soldier Exposes American Policy

Drax says...

There was a lot of knee-jerk discrimination right after the attack (I remember this going on myself). He was in a very "white" part of the country with dark skin and other features that made him resemble 'the enemy'.

I don't think he directly says it, but it's probably another factor that prevented him from getting a well paying job.

In his mentions of 9/11 I think he's only referring to the justification to war aspect, not the setup/cover up. I didn't quite catch in what way he's tieing it all together myself, but I think his talk was part of a larger seminar. There's probably some unspoken (least in this video) theme to the talks that give what he's saying more context.

"...and I don't think comparing it to a gynecologist is fair. The guys that work the x-ray and inspection machines probably had to attend a 1 week seminar on how to operate the machinery and what to look for. I don't think that compares to the $100k or so of Getting an MD and the years of education/training/and ethical philosophy. Not to mention that the scanner and the scaned are basically anonymous to each other. If something happened you wouldn't know who did it, and they wouldn't know who you are so they'd be less caring about violating your privacy."
