Zero Punctuation - EVE Online

I took a Women in Media class and this game was featured for one of the lectures. It was odd, the teacher suggested the game had a massive female player base, which left me totally baffled. It just seems so unlikely. It's sci-fi. There are no people in the game, just lifeless machines. Not a single woman in the classroom had even heard of the game, and none had played it. I think she got her statistics mixed up or something. She must've meant WoW or Second Life or something.

Anyway... for the space MMO we've all been waiting for, I think Jumpgate Evolution is where to look. Joystick-centric gameplay with plenty of sweet Star Wars style action. Yum!

Photo-Realistic Virtual World Rendered LIVE server-side

cybrbeast says...

spoco, here you can see a live demo of the software running in a browser. It's still not completely smooth, but definitely working. BUT apparently it uses 3 GPU's to make these images. So a Second Life type application would be very expensive with today's technology. But playing super beautiful games with a low end computer might be possible. Consider this, if you have an expensive GPU you only use it when you play games, the rest of the time it's pretty much idle. Now three GPU's can then provide content for a lot of users if they don't play at the same time. With a moderate subscription fee, or a pay by the hour fee, I think this would be possible. With further scaling of technology, maybe cell like super multi-core processing the costs can come down significantly.

If I had a low end machine I wouldn't mind paying to play a beautiful version of say GTA without having to upgrade my computer for $1500. And having to upgrade again a year later, etc.

I wouldn't exactly classify this video as Lies, but very optimistic and some years into the future. It needs a lot of development, but I long for the day that I don't have to upgrade to play the newest games.

NSA spying on World of Warcraft and Second Life users

gwiz665 says...

This video and this proposal reeks of ignorance. They don't really know what World of Warcraft or Second Life is about and it is very apparent.

Second Life is unimportant in reality - it's like a giant paintbox that college professors and artists play with, but that's that.

World of Warcraft is a game with social aspects - but is still primarily a game, with quests, missions and so on, like any other game.

Is Second Life really in the same league as WoW? I wonder what the stats are.

Dunno what the fear and loathing is about - if I was in charge of a huge-ass spy agency, I'd definitely want to keep an eye out on all sources of intel, including in this crazy game worlds.

Of course, spying on your own citizens is an ugly red shade of Stalinism which Bush seems to have embraced with unmitigated glee - that issue, of course, dwarfs game world spy crap by far.

On the one hand, spying on phonecalls is probably more insidious - while online stuff is easier to scan automatically on the other hand.

I'm not going to upvote though because he's like OMFG, they used the name of a clever mythical creature to name their product. WE'RE DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!

Second life calls out Jon Stewart

This is how you spell Second Life: "W E A K".

Second Life is populated by weirdos, companies and pseudo-professors that like the idea of a virtual world, but doesn't realize that Second Life actually is a pile of crap.

i dont think you're being fair to Second life. If you play it knowing its just a chat room, it's actually pretty good fun. I used to pop on there with my real life partner and chat to people etc or mess about with the things people make. It's also got a nice scripting language built in for automation of in world objects which gives you something to fiddle with while your chatting for the programmer types.

There are some people that take it *way* too seriously, to the point of idiocy. I remember getting banned from someone's property because i stepped on their grass.

I dont play it anymore, it got boring over time once you realise that a) you do have to pay to get anything worth having and b) the amount of people building clothing and shoes for the female players is insane.

Second life is not a game. Games are fun. Games have a point. Second life is a 3d chat room that you pay for. From what I've seen Second life seems to be populated with lonely business/working people who are too lazy or stupid to figure out anything else to do on a computer and second life makes them feel smart because they are virtual-chatting on the interwebs. Frankly if your just wanting to talk to random people on the internet irc is much better than second life in my opinion and its free.
