White Stripes - 'Ball and Biscuit'; long, bluesy performance

bamdrew says...

Its roots-rock, JAPR. Folk and blues-revivalists (ex: Bob Dylan) tend to revel in the anti-perfection, anti-production, and singular voice of the originals (ex: Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson). By 'singular voice' I mean a minimally invasive backing following the lead wherever the lead wants to go.

Implying that for performers to be good they must skillfully comply to playing their instrument as 'professionally' as others is practically the definition of musical close-mindedness.

... not that I'm calling you close-minded; I don't know you, and for all I know you wrote your comment in 15 seconds based on watching 10 seconds of the clip... I'm just throwing that out there, is-all. Spicing up the boards!

Guitar Duel from Crossroads

acl123 says...

Actually the ending piece that wins the duel is not Steve Vai's composition really, it's Paganini. The piece is ironic in some ways - Steve Vai represents Paganini and the classical school whilst Ralph represents Robert Johnson, yet Ralph wins by playing a Paganini piece that he must have learned in Juilliard.

Ralph does a great job at fake guitar playing in this movie, by the way. I wonder if he actually turned out to be a decent player after all the training he must have gone through.

Eric Clapton: Terraplane Blues

choggie says...

Johnson recorded everything he ever would, in a couple of days, in a two different Texas hotels, in makeshift recording studios set up on the spot(in the old days, the cutting machine had to be there, with the artist).....he got paid, dick.

Two guys needed here, to get the sound that Johnson could get out of one guitar.

Does Clapton cover every Robert Johnson track, or is it only a few?...Johnson only laid down 30 tracks in his short life...

."My doorknob keeps on turnin', there must be spooks around my bed..."

The Loudness War

MINK says...

different strokes for different folks. in our studio, when we make drumnbass, we compress a lot. when we record a female singer songwriter, we don't.

it's similar to saturation on a photo, sometimes you want bright rich colours, sometimes you want shades of pastel. neither is "right" or "wrong", it's just another tool in the box which can be used for good or bad.

i agree that adverts being louder than the programmes is BAD but then, i don't watch telly, because the adverts are annoying at ANY volume (and everyone is speaking lithuanian anyway)

what i really hate is poppy "progressive" housey type tunes where the bass kick is so squeezed it actually replaces the rest of the sounds, every beat, with a long release so it takes a while for the rest of the song to come back. it's like "B...wwwWWWB...wwwWWWB..." over and over again.

when stuff is played on the radio sometimes it sounds bad because the radio station is recompressing everything again. that's why people do alternative masters for radio play as opposed to consumer release or vinyl pressing. you do what is appropriate.

and about vinyl... i love vinyl, even if it is a placebo effect, i don't care, it is still an effect isn't it. and noise is GOOD. listen to Robert Johnson recordings until you learn this

and about dynamics on the radio... they are totally paranoid about "dead air" (silence) to the point that they won't play a tune that goes quiet at any point. it would sound like your radio had turned off.

But the point I saw was that all these videos made it through the queue:

Holocaust in Indonesia

mlx says...

And you know, farhad, how much it hurt me to have to sacrifice that Robert Johnson documentary...but you're right, it's the integrity of Videosift we're talking about.

This particular situation smacks of favoritism and elitism. I don't think this was careless: I think this was very well planned out. And since Rickegee is a member of the collective the presence of the TayTV icon (and link to the blog) the reposted video is still in violation of the guidelines.

# You are in any way responsible for or involved in marketing, promoting, or any other manner of proliferating the video.
# You could receive any form of compensation (monetary or otherwise) as a result of the submission or subsequent views.
# You are somehow represented in the content of the video whether photographically, artistically, audibly, or metaphorically.

Wonder if a *save would work on this, I don't have one.

Holocaust in Indonesia

Farhad2000 says...

No I disagree for cutting corners for people just because they submit good content.

We went over this rule when self-linking was re-dressed by MLX herself, I came forth and vouched all my self-linked posts. None of them were commercial either (Robert Johnson doc and a doc on Robert Capa), this is not so much about content as setting a precedent for other users that come to the site.

The moment we start to be lenient on users, for submitting content is the day the entire dynamic of this site unravels. If I can post anything just because it's awesome and then link my own website. Am I really self-linking? Am I self-promoting?

I rather not get into discussions over details, and rather have a blanket rule for all posters.

Because I know it would make us look rather stupid for banning other self-linkers, some who don't just come posting garbage, but good content that simply violates the rules of the site. Should we give them a break as well?

Robert Johnson + Mix Master Mike = great 40 sec. clip

bamdrew says...

My Dad started to understand the whole 'scratching up records to a back beat' thing after seeing this part of Scratch, in which Mix Master Mike describes how scratching lets him participate along with the music he loves and proceeds to play a frikkin Robert Johnson track.

Pretty cool!

Robert Johnson = Devil: Bullsh*t "Expose" by Christian Group

bamdrew says...

Nobody knowns much of anything about Robert Johnson, just that he wrote all these tragic and melancholy songs in the poetic and powerful words of Christian mythology.

The narrator sounds like he say's "DUUUDE!" a lot.

The Son House recording is great... "he'd get the guitar and be tryin to play it and just be noisen' the people".

However the stuff they say about feeling like the music comes from elsewhere is true, I think. They used to call them Muses back in the day. And whatever brought about Robert Johnson's great music, I say, bring it on. I find this narrator HILARIOUS.

The Self-linking Thread (Sift Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

Yes I admit it, I don't want Theo being all alone

But I doubt you will ever find Robert Johnson or the documentary on Robert Capa out there uploaded either. They aren't Family Guy, Colbert or Obama clips. However this doesn't mean I intend to continue doing so. And I actually agree with MLX though support the peer to peer supervision outlined by PM.

FYI: I switched out the embeds out for the Spaced one as I found one that was similar quality.

The Self-linking Thread (Sift Talk Post)

mlx says...

So farhad's done it, too, and admits it freely. I had suspicions about that Robert Johnson video, this one is from the same google video user. Personally, I think it'll be a worse can of worms if we allow members to link to content they've uploaded, even if they didn't originally create it.

Sure, I've found videos that I wanted to submit but weren't at youtube, etc., or embeddable, it happens occasionally. Usually if I wait a day or two someone uploads it and I can post it here. Have I ever considered uploading it myself? Sure, but I didn't because I value this place too much and didn't want to cheat it.

Personally, I vote to keep the rules as they are except to add that even starred-members may be banned for repeated violation of the guidelines.
