Fox News Tramples the Constitution - John Stewart

Fletch says...

Can't argue with anything you said, except I don't believe there is an equivalency to FOX of all network news, although I think the success of FOX has definitely encouraged the downward spiral of non-FOX networks as they try to keep up.

The truth is out there, although it's increasingly difficult to discern from within this 3000-mile-wide bubble, and people can be easily waylaid by false narratives. I don't think our elected officials and Washington "insiders" even fully grasp the big picture. That gives lots of breathing room for dispair and paranoia, as well as conspiracy theorists who see clandestine machinations in everything. There absolutely is treachery afoot, but that doesn't mean every terrorist attack or shooting rampage is a government plot.

CNN Sympathizes with High School Rapists

Jerykk says...

Putting someone in prison isn't harsh enough. There should be a zero tolerance policy with automatic death penalty, which would need to be carried out efficiently. No more prisoners sitting on death row for years. No more ridiculously expensive lethal injections. If someone commits a crime and there's sufficient evidence of their guilt, they are killed quickly (broken neck, slit throat, cattle spike into the head, etc) and cremated. Boom, no more overpopulated prisons and no more wasted taxpayer money on feeding and sheltering criminals who will likely break the law again as soon as they are released.

Enforcing the law is always the trickiest part, since we don't have constant surveillance of every citizen. Therefore, in the absence of surveillance, we have to rely on fear. There's a reason why people don't think twice about speeding, jaywalking or littering. Not only are they very unlikely to get caught, the penalty when they do get caught is negligible. If you gave the death penalty for the above crimes, I guarantee people would think twice before committing them.

As for Norway, they certainly do have a comfortable prison system. If I were to go on a shooting rampage, I would definitely do it in Norway because their prisons don't seem that bad. In fact, their prisons are probably nicer than the living conditions of most criminals. The point of punishment is to deter people from breaking the law in the first place, not make them happier and less likely to do so after the fact.

Deterrence in the style of "let's make an example of a few of 'em" has a pretty poor track record. Look at the war on drugs - extremely harsh penalties for pot smokers - did not work - just filled up US prisions with people caught with a roach in their ashtray.

13-Year-Old Girl With Amazing Shooting Skills.

EMPIRE says...

I'm not saying it's not a sport. I'm just saying this video looks way too much like a kid training to go on a shooting rampage.

It is a sport, very much like hockey or basketball, shuffleboard, drag racing competitive dance....

Sad I have to rely on a Wikipedia link, but it explains it better than I. You do not like firearms, that is a different discussion, as far as why that sort of skill set is needed ? answer your question with a question- Why does someone train to throw a ball to another person at 99 mph.. or dunk a ball, or slap a puck into a net ( in the top right corner) etc. etc. It is a sport, there is no practical use for the skill. Your hobbies are things you like to do and are generally proficient in them, or you practice so you get better.

Don't be wearing your orange ball sweater out in public anymore after watching this video.

Young man shot after GPS error

krelokk says...

The world needs more guns. All the rampage shooters are PATRIOTS! PATRIOTS! Gun owners are just practicing their rights! More children should die if it means keeping our guns! If every person in the world had a gun, heck, four guns, world peace would have been achieved years ago. GUNS = WORLD PEACE... IDIOTS!

Maybe snake did go on a rampage, you're the 2nd person to mention it. I guess I glossed over that bit in my beatification of St. Snake.

Ah snake... you forgot to mention @dag that he also when through and effectively discarded every one of his posts via edit. There was much discussion afterwords about the effect on the future of the community when no one could see its past.

Also, to this day I can't look at a techcrunch article without a frown because of the whole sift/pligg incident.

Piers Morgan - Alex Jones Goes 'Full Retard' Part 1

KnivesOut says...

Why is anyone listening to Alex Jones talk about anything, let alone put him on CNN?

This guy seriously believes that all the recent rampages are somehow staged "False Flag" attacks perpetrated by the Anti-Gun Establishment. Aurora, Gabby Giffords, Newtown. He'd have you believe that the government is programming disaffected teens to trigger into psychotic murderers like the Manchurian Candidate.

Seriously, what the fuck? Put him back on the street-corner with his card-board box and "The End is Nigh" sandwich board.

Last Resort Active Shooter Survival Measures by Alon Stivi

CaptainObvious says...

I am not trolling. If it seems like I am from my last post - then I must have done a poor job making my point - it happens - but it is not my point to troll. I was trying to show the fact that these days even a kid knows how to sweep a room.

It's not rocket science. Don't be a sheep and accept something because an "expert" told you something. Think for yourself. - if you were one of those nutcases on a rampage - don't you think you might be checking the corners before entering a room.

I was tipping around the issue, but flat out, I think this guy is capitalizing on fear and cashing in the checks. I am not saying he doesn't know his shit - I think he def does and is a genuine bad ass - but that doesn't mean these are good tactics, it means he gets paid more for teaching you this garbage than a 2 min lesson that says lock the door and turn off the lights if you are unarmed.

Having an instructor give you straight talk - like you need to grab his gun while forcibly stabbing his face/eyes and with your pen puts people out of their comfort zone and doesn't sell as well to corporations. These feel good vids like this one do sell well and give people a sense of security that is misplaced.

Prepare for the enemy you will be facing, not the one you wish you were facing..

These people are not getting the training they think are - well at least not from what I saw in these clips.

Actual Gun/Violent Crime Statistics - (U.S.A. vs U.K.)

KnivesOut says...

The problem (as I see it) is that we're conflating every-day street crime (which is statistically more rare than it used to be) with horrific gun rampages (which are statistically more common than it used to be, and obviously more rare than every-day street crimes.) They're completely different animals. Choggie would have us believe that baseball bats are just as dangerous as AR15s. Certainly, statistically, that is true when we're discussing average crime-rates. However, I've never heard of someone bludgeoning a classroom full of preschoolers with a louisville slugger.

As Americans, we have to decide: are we OK with horrific gun rampages a few times every year? Is your right to own a military sidearm or rifle worth the occasional shooting spree? Maybe it is. Maybe that's the price of freedom.

Certainly, absolutely we need to address street crime and the factors that contribute to it. However, its obvious from these statistics that WE ARE. The crime rate has gone down.

And yet the shooting spree rate has gone up.

Demand A Plan? Demand Celebrities Go F*ck Themselves

krelokk says...

Fuck this, they are still all completely correct. There are violent movies and video games across the planet. It is the USA and its insane gun 'laws' that create the school murder rampages. Any other 1st world country that has these mass killings immediately restricts access to fire arms and most have never had another one of these events again. They watch the same movies. There have been like 10 in the last decade in the USA.
