Pooch Figures It Out.

budzos says...

Looks to me like it's part learning, part practice, and part getting easier each time (less deciding which one to push and being distracted by the other ones and the other ones getting in the way).

Starting from when the dog first directs its attention to the target toy, time to getting the treat per attempt.
1st: 16 s.
2nd: 12 s.
3rd: 8 s.
4th: 5 s.
5th: 4 s.
Time to Success (seconds) = 0.5 (attempt number)^2 - 6.1 (attempt number) + 21.8 seconds
R-Squared = 0.996
"Why?" you ask. No idea. I was wondering what the curve looked like. I'll be sure to bring it up with my shrink.
edit: Now, of course I'm wondering, what would the curve look like if you gave the dog the same toy again the next day. What would it look like for a cat? Would it be exponential like I originally figured if my data were more accurate? Are psychologists actually scientists, or are they just pretending?

I'm not a clinical psychologist, so I apologize if I offended any schizophrenics out there. Thanks for encouraging me to learn the difference between DID and schizophrenia.

You guys trying to argue with the crazy person on his terms are so far down the rabbit hole... I'm sorry, but it's time to pull out.
It's like trying to lawyer a schizophrenic into a logical corner using the fragments of his psychosis as proofs. You can't trap him, because his magical imaginary friend will always provide an escape clause.
Just like in real life, best to not make eye contact and keep a steady pace as you walk on by.

What if you're interested in how schizophrenics think and experience the world? Should you refuse to speak to one or ask him/her questions just because his/her answers might be absurd?
ps. I think you've confused schizophrenia with DID.

Will Smith on the Kissing Reporter

longde says...

Yeah, take that Will Smith and Oprah. God forbid you guys can become superstars and multi-millionaires. You have to "stay genuine", and never change, even if it means staying dirt poor or mediocre. Conforming to some vague notion of "blackness" is more important than personal achievement.

And fuck Obama too, and Ursula Burns, and any other black person with talent, drive and determination, who happens to have charisma and appeals to other races. And god forbid someone undergoes personal transformation and change to succeed, especially in a society where the chips are stacked against them on day 1. No, it's better to know one's place.

Yeah, Barack, Ursula, Will and Oprah, even though you guys are actually transforming what it means to be african american and black by kicking down barriers, so that black kids can feel they can do anything and be anyone, FUCK YOU.

Will, you should still be rapping about Philly with the other ol' skool rappers on tour on the c-circuit. Oprah, you should still be doing "who's the father!!" shows and competing with Jerry Springer and Maury. Ursula, wasn't middle management enough? And Barack my man, you did much more good as a community organizer.

C, your premise and line of thinking is ridiculous. Can you explain to me what role is acceptable for a black man? You castigate Will Smith for being weak then complain about Samuel Jackson and Denzel Washington? These guys aren't flava flav for gods sake.

Please forgive me for not seeing your sarcasm, if that's what this is. >> ^chingalera:

When it comes right down to it, who really gives a fuck why Will Smith back-slapped a reporter, or why the reporter decided to kiss him. All that really matters is that Will Smith, one of the whitest black men in America, will never get any revenue from me, as I plan to download the film from many of my friends around the world who won;t shed a tear when Hollywood dies.
He can join the other list of sell-out negroes in Hollywood who have taken the $Bait$ and become masters of a weak stereotypical representation of the African-American male.
There's the ultimate hero negro: Denzel Washington, Jim Brown, (AKA, The Victim of Society Negro
The Superhero Negro: Wesley Snipes, Samuel L. Jackson, Laurence Fishburne
The Historical Hero negro Cuba Gooding Jr., Denzel Washington, Will Smith
The Sidekick negro-Sam Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Don Cheadle
Cop/Psychologist/Social Worker Negro-Sydney Poitier, Whoopi Goldberg
and then there's the , "Only African-American female to ever win an Academy Award for best actress getting ass-raped negress, Halle Berry
Fuck Will Smith, he's another total sell-out.

Why Do YOU Buckle Your Seatbelt?

chilaxe says...

Measuring the effectiveness of a current ad campaign by comparing macro trends that have going on for decades isn't going to be accurate. Useful data would need to be obtained by measuring drivers' behavior after viewing the two ads.

Most psychologists would probably say driver behavior will be more influenced by high threat of financial loss (loss aversion) than a soft, artful depiction of an unlikely event that speeders assume can't happen to them.

If there's a lower rate of seatbelt use in the US, it's probably due to hard reasons like the higher average education level among drivers in Europe and Japan, where car use is more expensive.

Anybody conscientious enough to appreciate an artistic ad has probably only very rarely met the kind of person who doesn't wear their seatbelt.

>> ^jubuttib:

>> ^chilaxe:
If we look at the data, the American commercials likely produce more of the desired result.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. While I don't have hard data at hand, there is one big difference in American and European cars that is related to this: Airbags. The American airbag is designed to be able to stop an adult that is not wearing a seatbelt, because so many people don't use the darn things. European and Japanese cars on the other hand have much less powerful airbags, that are designed to cope with someone that is wearing their seatbelt. Cars that are imported to the States often get the "America spec" airbag added because of this. This would suggest that using seatbelts is vastly less common in the States.

Brief History Of Marijuana -- John Fugelsang

Reefie says...

>> ^budzos:
Yes, for fuck's sake. And not this medical marijuana bullshit nonsense. Marijuana should be as legal as tomatoes. The concept of a plant being illegal is insane to me.

Your comment made me think of the vast number of poisonous plants that aren't illegal, plants like buttercups, bracken, St John's Wort, yew trees, rhododendron bushes, privet hedges, all of these are highly toxic and yet are perfectly legal to grow, in fact are very commmonplace. I'm only scratching the surface here. Oh - a good example would be poppies, perfectly legal to grow, definitely poisonous, and can be harvested for opiates (although as far as I know it's the processing of the opiates that is illegal in most countries).

Marijuana isn't toxic, no more harmful than alcohol, and has been shown to offer benefits for both physical and mental illnesses. It's even been shown to help people become more aligned with what is referred to by psychologists as 'neural neutral' - i.e. normal.

Inmate gets the run-down from a realist prison guard

Trancecoach says...

When I worked as a psychologist in the juvenile justice system, I met guards who occasionally showed aspects of this guard's assessment of his role and the "system." And occasionally, I'd wonder if administering therapy with the inmates, rather than the guards, was the best use of my time...

That said, I'd like to know (and watch) the documentary or program from which this clip was taken...

I'd recommend just trundling along to a public library and flicking through an introductory psych textbook for a section on attitudes and/or persuasion. After an intro book a psych book dedicated to social psych would probably be a good option too, as it would probably have a more in depth look at attitudes.

The material might be less related to your original post about your own introspections though. It would probably be more about what makes attitudes stable/labile etc. It's interesting stuff though!

What text(s) would you recommend?
In reply to this comment by berticus:
Actually, there is an enormous literature on persuasion, argument, attitude change, etc. Social psychologists love that stuff. You should look into the psychology of persuasion, it's fascinating -- but prepare to be depressed.

As to your 'mental states', I doubt it's black and white. I'd say it's a continuum as per jonny's comments, and shifts along this continuum are due to attending — or not attending — to certain cues at certain times that change the way you argue.
